Threat Matrix: November 2006

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Price of Victory
-Full Story-

The "bombshell" revelation from last April's National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which was leaked to the New York Times in September, was that the war in Iraq had resulted in more terrorism, not less. As reported by United Press International's Claude Salhani, "Did we really need 16 intelligence agencies to tell us that? Ten minutes of watching the newscast of your choice, from Al-Jazeera to Fox News, would be enough to convince most observers." But the key question is why the war has provoked the global Jihad.

One answer has to be the influence in the Arab world of the America-
hating network Al-Jazeera
. The AIM DVD on "Terror Television" shows film footage of captured terrorists saying they came to Iraq to kill Americans because of the words and images on Al-Jazeera.

Coalition, Iraqi Forces Kill, Detain Terrorists

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Nov. 24, 2006 – In separate operations today, yesterday and Nov. 22 throughout Iraq, coalition forces and Iraqi security forces killed five terrorists and detained 21 suspected terrorists, military officials in Iraq reported.

Coalition forces killed four terrorists and detained six suspected terrorists during a mission today to disrupt an al Qaeda car bomb cell in Tarmiyah.

As ground forces made their way toward the targeted building, they received enemy fire from the vicinity of a mosque. Coalition forces returned fire, killing four terrorists, and continued toward the targeted building.

At the targeted building, the ground forces detained two suspected terrorists. After they left the building, they returned to the vicinity of the mosque and six individuals, including two wounded men, exited the building.

Four suspected terrorists were detained and the two wounded men were treated by ground forces on scene. They were then taken to a nearby military medical center.

Elsewhere, special Iraqi army forces, with coalition advisors, conducted a raid yesterday in Baghdad to capture an insurgent believed to have facilitated the movement of foreign fighters who kidnap and murder Iraqi civilians and attack coalition forces. Iraqi forces entered a mosque in the Samir neighborhood where the insurgent and other suspected insurgents were reportedly located. Iraqi forces detained six suspects. No coalition forces entered the mosque.

Iraqi and enemy forces exchanged small-arms fire, resulting in one enemy wounded. The wounded person was treated and placed into Iraqi police custody.

An unknown ignition source caused a fire to start in a trash pile located next to the mosque, officials said.

In another operation, special Iraqi security forces, with coalition advisors, captured four insurgents yesterday in a raid in the al Doura district of Baghdad who are allegedly responsible for roadside-bomb attacks and other attacks against Iraqi civilians and Iraqi police. The insurgents are linked to al Qaeda in Iraq and are known to harbor terrorist fighters in the area and conduct attacks against Iraqi police and coalition forces checkpoints, officials said. Three additional suspected insurgents were detained by Iraqi forces.

One insurgent was slightly wounded during the operation. He was treated by medical personnel at the scene and is expected to fully recover.

Separately, coalition forces killed a terrorist and detained two suspected terrorists Nov. 22 during a raid in Balad. The raid targeted an individual associated with a suspected senior leader of the al Qaeda network.

As coalition forces approached the target area, they engaged and killed an armed terrorist. Coalition forces continued their mission and detained two suspected terrorists armed with weapons and ammunition.

I am angry watching the news and the 'insanity' of all those greedy buggers with dollars to waste sit at "Best Buy" to buy their electronic toys while THIS is going on!!!

It's just entertainment, folks. Nothing more. Just don't forget to spend all your money. It's the patriotic thing to do.

"Some retailers are trying to find a way to take advantage of the fact that once dinner is over, many families are looking for some kind of entertainment," said Ellen Davis, spokeswoman at National Retail Federation, a trade group.

Hi JP.

It is very maddening!!

I watched a special show yesterday about a lady and her Golden Retriever that visit Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio to bring a little happiness to the wounded soldiers.

Here is a short story I found about them.........

• Carol Triesch and Jasmine volunteer in a number of facilities in San Antonio, most
notably Brooke Army Medical Center. There, they work with soldiers returning from Iraq
with burns and amputated limbs. “Carol and Jasmine touch the lives of countless soldiers and their families every day,”
says Gen. Mark A. Graham of Fort Sam Houston, citing their “immeasurable impact in
meeting the needs of the soldiers and comforting broken hearts.”

It was heart wrenching to watch these heroes suffering as they do. I pray for their recovery, we always salute them on the Nascar thread for their bravery. Also pray for the safe return of all those in Iraq and Afghanistan along with the medics who care for them and save so many of their lives.

"FLQ letter threatens new attacks"
CanWest News Service; Montreal Gazette
Published: Wednesday, November 22, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "xMONTREAL - A letter claiming to be from a new cell of the Front de liberation du Quebec and threatening to take action for what it describes as ''Anglo-Saxon imperialism'' in the West Island and west-end Montreal is being investigated by police.

The letter, from a group or someone identifying themselves as the ''Camille Laurin Cell'' of the FLQ, was sent last week to media outlets and city halls in the western part of Montreal Island.

The letter, dated Nov. 15, threatens ''the hits will begin very exactly in three months,'' an apparent reference to Feb. 15, the anniversary of the day when five members of the Patriotes rebellion against British colonial authority were hanged in 1839."

U.S. Embassy Ankara released the following Warden Message on November 24, 2006:

There is a demonstration planned for Sunday, November 26 at 12:00 hours in the Sisli-Ça'layan section of Istanbul. The Sisli-Ça'layan section is situated adjacent to the E-5/D-100 highway, which connects to several main streets that lead to the popular Taksim and Beyo'lu districts. The demonstration is being organized by the Felicity Party ("Saadet Partisi") to protest Pope Benedict XVI's upcoming visit to Turkey. In the past similar demonstrations at Ça'layan have drawn tens of thousands of people. At a minimum expect several street closures and considerable traffic delays. Please plan your day accordingly.

We wish to remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can become confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations. As is always the case while overseas, Americans should exercise caution and good judgment, keep a low profile, and remain vigilant with regard to their personal security.

For the latest security information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov/, where the current Worldwide Caution, Public Announcements, and Travel Warnings can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S., or, for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. "Gunman Arrested at Miami Herald Building"
Nov 24th - 3:53pm
By JENNIFER KAY Associated Press Writer

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "MIAMI (AP) - A cartoonist carrying a gun and dressed in camouflage surrendered to police at The Miami Herald's building Friday, more than two hours after arriving and demanding to see an editor of the newspaper's Spanish-language sister paper, police said.

No injuries were reported, and no shots were fired.

Jose Varela carried a semiautomatic pistol loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, police chief John Timoney said. Varela had problems with El Nuevo Herald, where he worked as a contractor, that included its position on Cuban emigres.

Varela was a contract cartoonist for the newspaper and had routine access to the building, officials said.

A police negotiator talked Varela into surrendering peacefully at about 2:45 p.m., Timoney said."

I must concur with your thoughts, JP. We are so cushy here in the U.S. We have much to be thankful for and we are thankful for the most part. The commercial form of the upcoming holidays is mainly for kids.

I ran out to a few stores today (just to get water and some more things to spoil my pets! and I just wanted to run away to someplace quiet after only a few minutes. I detest the holiday music playing over the store stereo systems and every stereo everywhere and I detest all the glitz and cheap decorations everywhere... I think holidays should be more private.

I am not celebrating too much this year. One manger and one menorah and THAT'S IT! So much for my $500 beautiful but artificial Christmas tree and all my antique ornaments; they haven't seen the light of day in a few years. But they are not "Christmas" anyway. And no gifts! Everyone gives to animal rescue organizations in my name like in prior years. I am sending supplies and gifts to our military people like in past years.

I do not mean to sound like a grinch, but this is what I am comfortable with. For those with children, I see why it is different and I understand and support them.

As for me, my family wants to disown me again this year when I tell them that I am already sick looking at the Christmas decorations everywhere; that I can't listen to my regular radio station this time of year; and that I again do not want any gifts except donations to animal groups.

I begged my roommate to do the same and not decorate overtly, but he wants to since he has only lived here for about 1 year and he has been looking forward to stringing lights...it's his house, so I told him if he decorated, I would not help him....still, I am hoping he will reconsider.

Thank goodness my current neighbors take their decorations down right after the holiday ends unlike some areas here... It is a somewhat patriotic area though, so at least that is good. Still, I can't wait to leave this area sometime in the New Year.

Oh, and did I say Happy Holidays, JP?!

P.S. Somewhere on FR there is an fantastic annual thread about giving to military members and their families. Gifts and supplies need to be sent by early December. It is a wonderful gesture to make.

Russia starts delivering rockets to Iran

John VI Cantacuzenes Alert: "Russian rocket deliveries to Iran started," from AFP, with thanks to all who sent this in:

Russia has begun deliveries of the Tor-M1 air defence rocket system to Iran, Russian news agencies quoted military industry sources as saying, in the latest sign of a Russian-US rift over Iran.
"Deliveries of the Tor-M1 have begun. The first systems have already been delivered to Tehran," ITAR-TASS quoted an unnamed, high-ranking source as saying Friday.

The United States has pressed Russia to halt military sales to Iran, which Washington accuses of harbouring secret plans to build a nuclear weapon.

Moscow has consistently defended its weapons trade with Iran. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said the contract for 29 rocket systems, signed in December last year, was legitimate because the Tor-M1 has a purely defensive role.

ITAR-TASS reported that the rockets were to be deployed around Iran's nuclear sites, including the still incomplete, Russian-built atomic power station at Bushehr.

7 killed in Muslim south despite Thai peace bid

Surayud Chulanont has already said that he would allow the imposition of Sharia in the South. Apparently that isn't good enough. From the Daily Star, with thanks to Twostellas:

Seven people were killed in Thailand's Muslim-majority south, police said Friday, despite the post-coup government's promise to boost the local economy in hopes of ending three years of unrest.
Finance Minister Pridiyathorn Devakula said the government would set up a special economic zone in the south to lure investment to the region, which lags far behind the rest of the nation.

"We are considering giving privileges to the private sector such as tax deductions and discount fees for land purchase as investors and businessmen have fled the area," Pridiyathorn told reporters.

The economic scheme, announced Thursday by army-backed premier Surayud Chulanont after a special cabinet meeting on the insurgency, covers the three restive provinces of Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani on the border with Malaysia.

He is quite mistaken if he thinks money will solve this problem.
