How long has Chuck Schumer known about these writings and why did he cover it up? We need hearings and resignations!

right. telling the truth (and there is no proof allen did this) means one is going to the gutter. let the facts speak for themselves. You think the media is going to highlight this?
They're going to volley this back onto the Allen campaign.
The story will either get buried before the weekend or it'll be used to make Allen look stupid.

"Am I the only one who longs for those days when political opponents would refer to each other as "my worthy opponent" "my learned and esteemed colleague and opponent" or at least in a civil manner?"
Have you heard about the speech alleged to have been given by George Smathers in the democratic primary in Florida in 1950?
Time Magazine reported that Smathers said: "Are you aware that Claude Pepper is known all over Washington as a shameless extrovert? Not only that, but this man is reliably reported to practice nepotism with his sister-in-law, and he has a sister who was once a thespian in wicked New York. Worst of all, it is an established fact that Mr. Pepper before his marriage habitually practiced celibacy."
While Smathers denied ever giving this speech, he did win the primary and served three terms in the Senate.

I personally think it's not that strong an issue, BUT go ahead and explain to the average mom that it's ok to write about child sex, and go ahead and explain why he wrote it, and go ahead and explain why you can't write a good book without something like that, and go ahead and explain why he wanted to write that.
Go ahead and explain it, because it is impossible to explain to the average person.

Perhaps this is a case of somebody actually reading Webb's books for the first time.

Lynn Cheney isn't running for Senate.
To: cdnerds
If you were Webb, wouldn't you have talked about this before, to make sure it's off the table? It's just weird.

Lynn is not running for US Senate. If she were and she'd written a "cock book", you'd better believe that would be fair game.
To: italianquaker
But this is different then what Foley did. Foley wrote sexually explict letters to underage boys, while Webb wrote about sex involving underage boys. </s>

Wrong. He can write what he wants. he can publish what he wants. But people don't have to elect him a senator if they find it troubling. yes it's fiction, but he wrote it and he owns it.

Yeah, I don't see that playing well in Virginia...maybe Massachusetts but not Virginia. Yah got that right. As a Vt. transplant, I was a little surprised at the bible belt ethos live and well here in Virginia Beach.
You ride around on a Sunday morning (most stores don't open until 11:00 or noon and liquor stores are not allowed to open until 1:00 p.m.) and the roads are deserted throughout most of the mornings.
Moreover, you can get a ticket and fined for uttering an obscenity in public.
Thus it could have an affect.

Like you, I think Allen should steer claer of this.
I also think the public should know that Jim Webb includes gratuitous pedophilia in his novels. For that reason alone I would vote against him. Call me stodgy. :-
