Schwarzenegger Surging Ahead as Vote Nears

The governor takes a commanding lead, with many Democrats and independents saying they support him. A key issue is leadership skill.

Just over five weeks before election day, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger holds a commanding lead over his Democratic challenger, state Treasurer Phil Angelides, who has built scant support beyond a core base of liberals, according to a new Los Angeles Times Poll.

If the Nov. 7 election were held today, likely voters would favor the Republican governor over Angelides 50% to 33%.

The survey found an abundance of grim signs for Angelides, including a failure to match Schwarzenegger's success in rallying voters of his own party strongly behind his candidacy. Just 61% of Democrats support Angelides, while 88% of Republicans favor Schwarzenegger. And independents, a crucial swing vote, support Schwarzenegger over Angelides 49% to 31%.

Stop new taxes and veto the damn Illegal Alien D/L bill from One Bill Gil and he meets my minimum requirements.

Your wish has been granted. He vetoed the D/L bill yesterday, he cut the vehicle registration tax (when first elected) and no new taxes have been implemented.

"A vote for Arnold is a vote for Hillary. :-)"

You are mixed up. Bill and Hillary Clinton, as well as John Kerry and Edwards all campaigned for ANGELIDES.

Let me repeat this S-L-O-W-L-Y: Any conservative who doesn't get out and ACTIVELY VOTE FOR ARNOLD, IS VOTING FOR ANGELIDES.

And anyone who does get out and votes for Arnold is voting for Hillary.

Dont question my logic because I'm sure there is none to it. :-)

Demographics, schmemographics. All a Republican candidate has to do is convey a strong center-right message, and even the most brain-dead liberal will flock to it.

The CAGOP keeps promoting feckless, me-too Republicans they're going to keep moving the ideology battle further and further to the left to the point that even moderates won't have a chance of winning anymore.

Vote for Arnold and vote for the Governor In Waiting - Antonio Villaraigosa. You Get Two For The Price Of One!

Bill and Hillary Clinton, as well as John Kerry and Edwards all campaigned for ANGELIDES.

Thats all part of their evil plan. They want him to lose, so they campaign for him. They KNOW they are doing damage to Angelides just by being there for him.

But there is logic to MY statements. :)

Angelides pushing donors to contribute by fundraising deadline

Sen. John Kerry, the former presidential candidate who has campaigned for Angelides in California, also sent a plea on the candidate's behalf.

"I know what it's like to take on the Republican attack machine," Kerry said in an e-mail to would-be donors. "And I know it takes courage, as well as resources to fight back. That's why I am asking you to support Democrat Phil Angelides for governor - before the critical September 30 filing deadline. ... Help us raise $75,000 by Saturday."

RINOs have been beaten soundly in California. The conclusion drawn from it by the CAGOP is conservatives can't win. Then demographics are invoked as the excuse to avoid running conservative candidates in California elections. If you stand for nothing, then you will end up with nothing. My prediction is Arnold's, like Nixon's 1972 victory, will be a lonely landslide.

Even Kerry knows its over. $75,000 and the French Poodle can't lend some of Teresa's millions to help out a struggling fellow Democrat? Kerry has been accused of a lot of things but even a liberal is not going to throw away his personal fortune on a losing proposition.

The choice is between Arnold and Angelides

Conviently forgetting a couple of candidates are we? Not to mention a large field of possible, conservative Republican write-ins.

virtually ALL of your posts are attacks against Arnold

You bet. A liberal deserve the all the criticism from conservatives that his acts generate.

directed at him with the purpose of defeating him,

Absolutely. Schwarzenegger is a liberal cancer metastasizing in the CaGOP

When it walks like a duck, posts like a duck, it's a DUCK,.

Correct again. A conservative duck in a pond that's being drained by political prostitutes within the CaGOP leadership. They'll do anything to win. Support a liberal. Ignore party traditions and principles. Support a dual citizen for high public office. You name the unspeakable crime and they've done it, all in the name of a temporal victory.

because you claim you are taking a salary from Republicans to help campaign for them, and you are taking the money, while you are working for their defeat.

I think you meant to say his his defeat.

Taking money from Republicans does not make someone a political whore. Some earn their money through honest labor.

Well, I am glad to hear that my campaign donations to the Republicans aren't paying your salary, for you to use it to undermine the Republicans. But your posts stand alone, they are promoting Arnold's defeat, and Angelides' victory.

Bingo. I've finally nailed who you remind me of. Margaret from the Dennis the Menace comic strip.

You sound like an 8 year old little girl with those dumb endless "You are campaigning for Angelides!" arguments.

Unless the money goes to fund a liberal or two. See my post on why a vote for Arnold is also a vote for the state's next Democratic Governor.

The lesser of two liberals argument is one that places symbolism over substance. I'm not interested in Arnold's Republican affiliation but in the actual nature of his policies. For some people, his having an "R" legitimizes acts they would oppose if a Democrat had done them. For me, its produced the opposite reaction - to oppose his candidacy because it damages conservative values and beliefs. Supporting a party ought to be more than about the name on the ballot; it ought to be about advancing its ideology and platform. That is why parties exist to win elections.

Since when is supporting a dual citizen like Schwartzenegger for higher office considered an unspeakable crime ?

Well, it's TRUE.

The same people who voted for Perot, and gave us Clinton, learned nothing, and now they want to give us Angelides.

Fortunately there seem to be more sensible people out there, who will vote to prevent that from happening.

People have to consider the consequences of their actions.

I have to assume that people are either so totally, incredibly stupid, that they don't understand it -- and I can't believe that conservatives are that stupid -- or the other alternative is however improbable, is the ONLY one left: they aren't conservatives at all, they are just pretending, and they are fully aware of the consequences of their actions and are very deliberate about it, and are indeed campaigning for Angelides, hoping that everyone else is so stupid, not to notice.

It's more than just an R next his name on the ballot. Arnold is also taller than Angelides.

We don't have a dog in the hunt. But if it eases your conscience, then reflect that Angelides as Governor would make it that much easier for the CAGOP to hold up state budgets. If the Austrian liberal was going to lose, even in his defeat, there would be a silver lining.
