The Conservative Case for Rudy Giuliani in 2008

John Hawkins of Right Wing News makes the conservative case against Rudy Giuliani for 2008. Hawkins’ piece largely consists of the same old anti-Rudy arguments wrapped in slightly new packaging, focusing a lot on Rudy’s decade-old socially liberal positions on a few cultural issues, as well as his Manhattanite personal life and some nonsense about unelectability (more on that later). As such, I think this is a great opportunity for someone to lay out the conservative case for Rudy in ‘08. And that someone might as well be me.

Giuliani: Pro-growth tax-cutter

Rudy Giuliani has proven, both during his tenure as mayor of New York and through his subsequent rhetoric, that he is a pro-growth Republican in the mold of Ronald Reagan, Jack Kemp, and Newt Gingrich. As mayor, Giuliani cut city taxes by more than eight billion dollars, reducing the tax burden on New Yorkers by 22%. Giuliani’s low-tax views remain intact. As Race42008 correspondent Kavon noted yesterday, Rudy’s recent visit to Minnesota included an emphasis on achieving economic growth via low taxes and less regulation on the economy. Rockefeller he ain’t; Rudy’s a Reagan Republican.

Rudy: Gingrich-style government reformer

Conservatives who liked Newt’s welfare reform and GWB’s attempt at entitlement reform have an ally in Rudy. As mayor, Giuliani reformed welfare in New York with the same tenacity as the class of ‘94 in Congress. Once again, this ain’t Christie Whitman we’re dealing with; Rudy’s a Newt Republican who also made a serious attempt to take on the teachers’ unions in NYC and fund school choice via charter schools. A President Giuliani means a conservative reformer who will fight for market-based revisions to our age-old bureaucratic messes in Washington.

Rudy Giuliani: Fiscal conservative

As mayor, Rudy Giuliani cut...

Rudy is in the running, but I would like to get a good look at any others that may be running as well.

Rudy is a hero from New York and not a perfect human being.
I don't have a lot of love from socially liberal leaning Republicans.

Repeat after me you mind-numbed robots...

You are a mind numbed robot.

Another single issue voter that believes the President will legislate abortion.

Rudy is banking on his leadership during 9/11 will get him the nomination. Nope. Won't fly in fly over country. Pro-abortion? Pro-same sex marriage? He is way to much of a Rino.

He has/is spending plenty of time in the South so he can get enough southern votes.

Obviously, you don't know the south. He hasn't got a prayer. On social issues, issues that matter most to most southerners, he flunks big time.

---"Rudy's a fierce partisan who raises money for GOP candidates of all stripes"

So does McCain

---"He seems to cringe whenever he's asked to say anything bad about a Democrat."---

So does Bush

---"Position papers will only take you so far. McCain found that out in 2000."---

In Rudy's case, it takes him a few millimeters with me.

Sorry. I'd hold my nose and vote McCain, reluctantly. I'd vote Democrat to cut our losses before I'd vote Rudy and purge the issues I care about from the GOP platform forever.

No way, now how. Under NO circumstances Rudy Giuliani.

Nada, No, No way, No how.

It's like you voting McCain, you see....

GIULIANI: That is not the critical factor. And what's important to me is to have a very intelligent, very honest, very good lawyer on the court. And he fits that category, in the same way Justice Ginsburg fit that category.

Rudy, stay home. We don't need you picking two and maybe three SCOTUS justices.

"Rudy is banking on his leadership during 9/11 will get him the nomination."

Were it not for 9/11, no one would seriously consider him.

>>>>>[Giuliani] believes in Ronald Reagan's 11th Commandment: Speak no evil of a fellow Republican.

That's pure bunkum. Running for politcal office and winning elections are hard-boiled human endeavors. Politics isn't for the faint of heart. The catch phrase "11th comandment" was a political slogan invented by California State GOP Chairman Gaylord Parkinson in 1966, and was a theme employed by Reagan in his run for the GOP nomination for Governor against liberal San Franciso Mayor George Christopher.

It was also a rule that Reagan broke during the 1976 GOP campaign for President. Reagan criticized PresFord and attacked his weak economic policy throughout the entire primary season, and even into the GOP Convention. Reagan may have been a gentleman but when the political chips were on the table Reagan was one tough SOB. Ford found out how tough Reagan was in 1976. Reagan almost upset a sitting POTUS. America wasn't quite ready for Reagan in 1976. And I don't think the GOP`s conservative base will ever support the nomination of liberal Rudy Giuliani.

Oh silly me. After all, sweet little Guili must just be a cute little conservative in liberal clothing.

The site you quote is a pro-Rudy shill. They admit one of the writer runs a pro-Rudy blog. Another is former Viking Reggie Rutland, who now goes by his Muslim name.

One article on the site talked about how as a Catholic, Rudy would really pull the Catholic vote.

Let's see, he's on his third wife and supports portial-birth abortion. I can just see the Catholic Bishops getting behind Rudy just like they did John Kerry, another fallen-away Catholic/sarc. If you remember, the Archbishop of St. Louis said he would refuse to give Kerry Communion.

as long as Rudy pledges not to promote same sex marriage and more abortion rights as President I couldn't care less on what his views are personally

I'll listen to him speak during the campaign on what he'll do on those subjects (and more) and decide for myself

but the 08 election for me is to have the best person in office to fight the war on terror and keep us from being hit with WMDs,, simple as that
