Rabbi Lapin, whose organization works to advance the nation toward "the traditional Judeo-Christian values that defined America's creation and became the blueprint for her greatness," had a different perspective.

“I believe it appropriate for thoughtful Jews to support the Coral Ridge documentary and perhaps even for it to be shown in Jewish schools because there really are only two ways to account for human presence on our planet. One is that God created us in His image. The other is that by a lengthy and random process of totally unaided materialistic evolution, primitive protoplasm evolved into Bach, Brahms, and Beethoven. This approach, ruling out any role for God, is simply incompatible with Jewish values,” he said.

Incompatible with Chistian values (IMHO) as well.

"Hitler did not need Darwin to devise his heinous plan to exterminate the Jewish people. Trivializing the Holocaust comes from either ignorance at best or, at worst, a mendacious attempt to score political points in the culture war..."

It's not an attempt to trivialize the holocaust, it is an attempt to demonize a scientific discipline. Minimizing the holocaust is just a side effect that shows the length that some will go to attack reason.

We've been through this recently on another thread. Humans have been suggesting breeding humans since Plato's time (mentioned in The Republic.)

Every Rabbi should be defending the Darwin/Hitler (not to mention Communism) connection.

Notice that Lapin doesn't endorse "creationism" in the sense of God creating us with the wave of a wand. Lapin's statement, rather, is consistent with the idea of evolution - provided God has a role in launching or guiding evolution. That's the perspective that's most consistent with science, religion and common sense. It's also the Vatican's position, I believe.

Blatant false dichotomy. I wouldn't be surprised if his opus magnum doesn't display even more logical errors.

Yep, no doubt about it, until Darwin appeared in the 1800's, the entire span of human history had not one instance of genocide, race war, mass killings, or selective breeding, based on alleged superiority of one group over another.

Prior to Darwin, everything was sweetness and light. It was the theory of natural selection that caused people to act in an evil manner. Yup, yup, yup....

/sarc

On the serious side, while natural selection is indeed a "lengthy" process, it is NOT "random" as the Rabbi stated. Individual variations are often generated by unpredictable circumstances such as mutation, but natural selection itself is based on the statistically-greater survival of more fit individuals. That's all. It's not random, it's reasonable.

Sheesh.

Read the addendum in Michael Crighton's anti-global warming book 'State of Fear'. He details the popularity of eugenics as a possible solution to (some of) mankind's problems in the first few decades of the twentieth century. Crighton's point was that, the opinions of the elites (including the top scientists) are subject to popular and misguided fads. The popularity of eugenics (proposing it, not necessarily practicing it) paralleled the rise in popularity of evolution. Even if evolution or the popularity of eugenics had no direct impact on Hitler's evil thinking, I don't believe he could have led an entire western nation/government into the actual massive practice of such evil without the idea of putting eugenics into practice being generally acceptable at that time. I AM NOT trying to make the point that this proves evolution is false - just trying to add some historical perspective to the attempt to link Darwin and Hitler. If there was, in fact, no link between the rise in popularity of eugenics and Darwin's theory of evolution, then I stand down.

Foxman is such a pompous prick.

The archives are available, the historians have long ago published, and the truth has long been known about the transatlantic Eugenicist school of thought that Hitler was intimately involved with.

Foxman is too afraid to comdemn Planned Parenthood. Founded by one of Hitler's favored Eugenicists, Sanger, and now run by the same Upper Eastside social set that Foxman recedes to after dark.

Thank you very much for posting this article. I first heard about the program Darwin's Deadly Legacy as it was advertised on Christian radio. I got pretty excited, thinking it would be on the History Channel and that my dad, who, unlike myself, has TV, would be able to watch it. His satellite does not cover "The Coral Ridge Hour" however. Up until last year my dad kept up a subscription to National Geographic and has been not only a believer in but an ardent defender of evolution, and not a studious reader of the Bible. I'm ordering the DVD for him, knowing that he has respect for many of the names and reputations of those who appear in this program, and for Dr. Kennedy himself.

I just watched the preview on-line, gratefully, and with gratitude to God and all involved pray that this program and all the controversy surrounding it will open eyes and soften consciences. Truth makes us free, though many rage in opposition. With gentleness and respect as Christ the Word and Spirit dwells in me, I've sought to discuss these things with my dad, yet knowing men are better able to receive truth from other men, I've prayed fervently for many years that an upright, godly, Bible-believing man would enter my dad's life for mentorship: This DVD is an answer to my prayers, for Dad watches a lot of TV!

Found through the Coral Ridge Web site:
Ten Questions to Ask Your Biology Teacher About Evolution.

Thanks to VOA for the link at post #20!

And thanks to protest1 for your comment #85 on a related thread; I'll print out quite a bit for Dad from there, too. It seems you are not a protest one, per se, but the cause of many (evidence above)!

With great admiration,

"Trivializing the Holocaust comes from either ignorance at best or, at worst, a mendacious attempt to score political points in the culture war on the backs of six million Jewish victims and others who died at the hands of the Nazis," he said.

You mean like liberals have done for forty years every time they say every anti-abortion, anti-homosexual, or chr*stian politico is a Nazi?

I'll say it again: it doesn't matter whether or not Darwin is directly implicated in Nazism. The simple fact is that in the world Darwinism believes in objective right and wrong do not, and cannot, exist. Appealing to liberals based on their instinctive aversion to mass murder simply confirms the false idea that morality exists independently of Divine decree.
