Rabbi defends show linking Darwin, Hitler

A rabbi has launched a defense of D. James Kennedy, whose new television special this weekend will raise an alarm about the bloodshed credited to the influence of Darwin's theories of evolution, and has been attacked because of its message.

Did Hitler practice Darwinism?

The program is "Darwin's Deadly Legacy", a Coral Ridge Ministries production featuring more than a dozen experts in various fields talking about the connections between Darwin's theories, eugenics, Hitler and abortion.

Its premise is that Darwin's thinking changed the world's perception of people, so instead of considering them made in God's image, they became just another organism. Bloggers Internet-wide as well as the Anti-Defamation League launched their criticism in pointed phrases when the airing was announced.

But Rabbi Daniel Lapin, founder of Toward Tradition, suggested reining in the words just a little.

"Some American Jews may believe that Christian conservatives pose the biggest threat to Judaism. Therefore Jews should insult and attack Christians and suppress dissent by constantly evoking the Holocaust while darkly implying anti-Semitism," he wrote in a column addressing the dispute. "God help Jews if America ever becomes a post-Christian society. Just think of Europe."

The program is to air nationwide on Aug. 26-27 on "The Coral Ridge Hour."

"This dazzling production shows how ideas always have consequences, often unintended, and how Darwinism has impacted American culture," Lapin wrote. "It discusses how the philosophy of evolution can dehumanize people and how Adolf Hitler, on his own admission, was influenced by Darwinian thought."

Kennedy, the Coral Ridge founder, acts as host for the program, and suggests, "No Darwin, no Hitler." The program goes even further, linking the two men with the concept of eugenics, formulated after Darwin wrote his theories and before Hitler came to power, with the contemporary abortion industry which does not recognize the value of all unborn human life.

A statement earlier this week from ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman condemned the ideas.

"This is an outrageous and shoddy attempt by D. James Kennedy to trivialize the horrors of the Holocaust. Hitler did not need Darwin to devise his heinous plan to exterminate the Jewish people. Trivializing the Holocaust comes from either ignorance at best or, at worst, a mendacious attempt to score political points in the culture war on the backs of six million Jewish victims and others who died at the hands of the Nazis," he said.

That came after bloggers had offered stinging criticism about the level of intelligence exhibited by those appearing in the program.

Rabbi Lapin, whose organization works to advance the nation toward "the traditional Judeo-Christian values that defined America's creation and became the blueprint for her greatness," had a different perspective.

“I believe it appropriate for thoughtful Jews to support the Coral Ridge documentary and perhaps even for it to be shown in Jewish schools because there really are only two ways to account for human presence on our planet. One is that God created us in His image. The other is that by a lengthy and random process of totally unaided materialistic evolution, primitive protoplasm evolved into Bach, Brahms, and Beethoven. This approach, ruling out any role for God, is simply incompatible with Jewish values,” he said.

Coral Ridge officials also dealt with the claim that Francis Collins, the director of the Human Genome Project, was deceived when he was interviewed for the program.

"A producer told Dr. Collins in person before the interview began that he was being interviewed for a program that would address the adverse social consequences of Darwin," the Coral Ridge statement said. "In addition, he was asked specifically, during the interview, about the Darwin-Hitler connection and responded on tape that he did not agree with that view."

Coral Ridge considers Collins, whose book, "The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief" was published only months ago, "a highly esteemed scientist and theistic evolutionist," but has agreed to leave his name off promotions and remove him from future airings.

"We consider him a fellow Christian and have reached a friendly understanding with him about this matter," the statement said.

Producer Jerry Newcomb said the show includes WND columnist Ann Coulter, who also wrote the bestselling "Godless: The Church of Liberalism."

She said Hitler simply was taking Darwinism from the theoretical to the practical.

"He thought the Aryans were the fittest and he was just hurrying natural selection along," she said.

Incompatible with Chistian values (IMHO) as well.

It's not an attempt to trivialize the holocaust, it is an attempt to demonize a scientific discipline. Minimizing the holocaust is just a side effect that shows the length that some will go to attack reason.

We've been through this recently on another thread. Humans have been suggesting breeding humans since Plato's time (mentioned in The Republic.)

Every Rabbi should be defending the Darwin/Hitler (not to mention Communism) connection.

Notice that Lapin doesn't endorse "creationism" in the sense of God creating us with the wave of a wand. Lapin's statement, rather, is consistent with the idea of evolution - provided God has a role in launching or guiding evolution. That's the perspective that's most consistent with science, religion and common sense. It's also the Vatican's position, I believe.

Blatant false dichotomy. I wouldn't be surprised if his opus magnum doesn't display even more logical errors.

What I don't get about anti-Christian Jewish "spokesmen" like Foxman is that when somebody supports the Ten Commandments in public places, or supports the idea that God created us, Foxman calls that a "Christian" view. Is he saying that Judaism doesn't believe in God or in the Ten Commandments that God delivered to the Jews? Is Christianity now the only religion that carries forward Old Testament principles? Foxman implies that, when he brands all God-centered policy proposals, as "Christian."

Yep, no doubt about it, until Darwin appeared in the 1800's, the entire span of human history had not one instance of genocide, race war, mass killings, or selective breeding, based on alleged superiority of one group over another.

Prior to Darwin, everything was sweetness and light. It was the theory of natural selection that caused people to act in an evil manner. Yup, yup, yup....

/sarc

On the serious side, while natural selection is indeed a "lengthy" process, it is NOT "random" as the Rabbi stated. Individual variations are often generated by unpredictable circumstances such as mutation, but natural selection itself is based on the statistically-greater survival of more fit individuals. That's all. It's not random, it's reasonable.

Sheesh.

Read the addendum in Michael Crighton's anti-global warming book 'State of Fear'. He details the popularity of eugenics as a possible solution to (some of) mankind's problems in the first few decades of the twentieth century. Crighton's point was that, the opinions of the elites (including the top scientists) are subject to popular and misguided fads. The popularity of eugenics (proposing it, not necessarily practicing it) paralleled the rise in popularity of evolution. Even if evolution or the popularity of eugenics had no direct impact on Hitler's evil thinking, I don't believe he could have led an entire western nation/government into the actual massive practice of such evil without the idea of putting eugenics into practice being generally acceptable at that time. I AM NOT trying to make the point that this proves evolution is false - just trying to add some historical perspective to the attempt to link Darwin and Hitler. If there was, in fact, no link between the rise in popularity of eugenics and Darwin's theory of evolution, then I stand down.

Great. Prediction by hindsight. "Why did that species survive?" "Well, it was better designed to." "How do you know?" "Well, it survived, didn't it?"

I really don't know why this is so controversial. Eugenicists have always cited Darwin to buttress the scientific nature of their theories. It's not the only citation. They also compare humans to plants and canines and eugenics to age old breeding techniques.

It was really a burgeoning movement and it was only thanks to Hitler that it's considered an abhorrent philosophy.

Anyone who has ever run a farm understands the basic process of evolution at least on a species level. This process and it's recommended application to humans predates Darwin (who never recommended anything like human eugenics) by centuries. As noted previously, eugenics was mentioned as far back as Plato.

Moves to persecute and purge Jews from various parts of Europe has been going on since Jews first arrived in Europe. Hitler was just the latest in a long history of persecutors of European Jews.

How about, God used evolution to create physical life and the part of us created in "His image" is our eternal soul.

Don't believe it was aliens.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I didn't say eugenics as an idea did not exist before Darwin. I said that I believe it rose in popularity in Western elite circles fueled by the rising popularity of the theory of evolution. I also believe Christianity was a major civilizing force that was helping to move Western civilization GENERALLY towards a more humane world-view and practices (like abolishment of slavery). So I see it as Darwin/evolution is on the rise from 1860 forward, while Christianity as a cultural/civilizing influence starts a corresponding downward trend. I am not saying at all that evolution, eugenics, inhumanity did not exist before Darwin - I am simply commenting on 19th & 20th century trends in Western civilization.
