What Say Ye FR? Should a woman be allowed to teach Scripture to men?
Herald Sun ^ | 8-21-06 | n/a

Posted on 08/21/2006 5:51:49 PM PDT by Bob J

In earlier news it was reported that a Baptist Sunday school teacher of 54 years was let go from her position because "My belief is that the qualifications for both men and women teaching spiritual matters in a church setting end at the church door, period," the Pastor was quoted as saying.

Apparently in a letter sent to the teacher earlier in the month they qouted from First Timothy Two, 11-14 "A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, she must be silent."

This news was posted on FR here and here.

It's an interesting topic considering the current discussions regarding Sharia law and the treatment of women in Islam. Some FReepers were shocked and others appeared to support the policy based on scripture interpretation.

What is your opinion?

Of course...ridiculous...

W is a gracious respecter of women and takes their advise easily...knowing their knowledge many times out shines men....then you can bet he'd be even more open to a woman's bible teaching...

Besides women and men are different [many times] in how they receive from Our Lord...therefore, different angles come from each...if one is lopsided [not allowing women to minister to them], he'll miss lots of goodies Our Lord has for him...shame on him...

If Genesis is just a parable, then Adam and Even didn't even exist, in your mind. So what's your real interest in any of this?

Well, it could cause some confusion when she gets to this, so I'll say no.

The One who called it parable and the one's the parable is about.

Priscilla was not teaching Apollos in the Assembly of believers, and she is not mentioned apart from her husband, who was present. It was a husband and wife in private fellowship helping Appolos.

see how many starchy old, narrow, fussed-up, fossilized old farts and fussies fall on the floor in a dead faint.

Or perk up and start paying attention. :)

However, Priscilla is mentioned first, which is very rare when mentioning a husband/wife pair, and something worth noting as far as her value to the community as a teacher.

The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

All I can say is that every (Baptist) church I've ever attended had mostly women teaching Sunday school and Vacation Bible school. A man always teaches the Men's Sunday school class and often had the youth group in VBS.
It is difficult enough getting men to even attend church!

Now, let's discuss what's pleasing to God and what doesn't turn His head.

Recalling that Cain worked very hard in his garden, and then sacrificed a portion of his crop. Abel brought his firstling from his flocks.

Given a choice like this God took roast lamb and Abel was in.

Ultimately Cain killed Abel but that's another story.

We could draw a number of conclusions from this story. One is that there are those who plant gardens and those who raise flocks. Another is that God prefers the "first fruits", so whatever you deliver up to God had best be the first and best you have else you'll lose countenance (that's "face" in the East" and will need to do an unsatisfying revenge killing.

Considering all this, I'd suggest strongly that you quit ploughing the Bible's fields trying to find something God might have given you gratis to offer Him as a sacrifice and come up with something you've done on your own, wandering the fields, chasing sheep, birthing lambs, dipping sheep, sheering them, etc.

Best bet for something comparable in this modern age where room for flocks is definitely limited is to become a CHP and catch speeders and reckless lane-changers. Sacrifice the first one you catch each morning to God.

Figure out how to do that without ending up at Solidad.

"Your argument isn't with me, it's with Him and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Return to Him so those gifts might be understood per His plan. A woman working as a pastor-teacher is attempting to perform good works at her own hand. Such works are good for nothingness. Only the good through faith in Christ as provided by Him is righteous." "
I don't bow before people just because they're men nor do I believe that God expects me too. Jesus spent his whole ministry uplifting women, the poor, and other outcasts.

"No pastor-teacher operates out of selfish control. Only by sacrificing the old man and remaining obedient to Him is the gift of pastor-teacher exercised. "
Apparently, the Catholic Church DOES have a more liberal policy than some Protestant Churches. While women aren't permitted to be priest, they are allowed to comment on the Scripture and church policy. In fact, St. Catherine went so far as to criticize the Pope's actions, and the Church made her a saint and a Doctor rather than ostracizing her.

"Administrative leadership is a gift some women might receive, but that is a discernible gift from that of pastor-teacher. "
So basically all women can do in a church according to you is type up the pastor's sermon and serve the menfolk coffee.

"That's right. The particular century isn't an issue in a discussion of biblical principles, except to provide illustrations as to why "democracy" is not God's favored form of government. The Messianic Kingdom, by the way, will not be a democracy, but according to Scripture, will be a Monarchy, which will not even be established by a popular vote."
According to the President, democracy is God's gift to the world. Dubya consistently asserts that all people should be able to elect their own leaders while here on Earth. So I'd say that democracy is God's preferred form of government.

"The local church, as a spiritual form of republic, would reflect the Bible's teaching on headship, submission and unity in the home, also the "pastoral" nature of each husband/father in his own home and, therefore, would foster a stronger church as well."
A marriage is a partnership with both husband and wife contributing equally. A husband is not a master nor is his wife his slave, and he shouldn't be able to make decisions for her at any time.

"We have a booklet entitled, THE SPIRITUAL REPUBLIC, which outlines local church government in this fashion, as well as how widows and single women have their needs cared about under the "republic" too. We have seen it work and flourish in mission churches in Asia because of the attention it gives to strong faithful homes."
More likely the chauvinist Asian men find the idea of keeping their women submissive appealing.

"Are we interested in using the local church as a platform for womens suffrage? Nope, 'cause it is not established for such purposes."
The disdain toward the suffrage movement that you showed in your earlier post suggests that you don't believe women should have the right to vote in civil elections either.

He could have just fired the lady without commenting on anything, and nobody eyebrows would have raised. However, he decided instead to make an incredibly misogynist comment that was demeaning toward all women.

Oh?

Hmmmm

I thgought believers were assembled at their house.

I think I am missing those assertions in my copy of the text. Is there a special decoder ring to read the invisible ink?

Now, now. Inconvenient truths are not usually greatly welcome on such threads . . . even when delivered by Christ Himself.

LOL.
