What Say Ye FR? Should a woman be allowed to teach Scripture to men?

In earlier news it was reported that a Baptist Sunday school teacher of 54 years was let go from her position because "My belief is that the qualifications for both men and women teaching spiritual matters in a church setting end at the church door, period," the Pastor was quoted as saying.

Apparently in a letter sent to the teacher earlier in the month they qouted from First Timothy Two, 11-14 "A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, she must be silent."

This news was posted on FR here and here.

It's an interesting topic considering the current discussions regarding Sharia law and the treatment of women in Islam. Some FReepers were shocked and others appeared to support the policy based on scripture interpretation.

What is your opinion?

I don't know much Scripture by chapter and verse. What is that particular verse?

There are prepared materials that are stuck to for sure.

You can have Bible study headed by women in prayer communities and as long as it is established they know their stuff (same as they would a guy).

We used to attend CCD at the Sisters Of Notre Dame Convent.

They ran a tight ship, and were so devout in not only their teachings, but the lives they led.

I had some of the most comprehensive teaching of the Catholic faith while attending studies at the convent.

They also would take us down to the bakery after class for a treat. The best!

The literal translation is fornication. However God's meaning was marital unfaithfulness. If it were not so, then those that choose to be unfaithful and fornicate with bottles, drugs, or other playthings would be exempt. Fornication simply represents marital unfaithfulness.

The issue in Scripture has more to do with the gifts of the Spirit, rather than legalism.

Nowhere after Pentecost does Scripture record a woman being given the spiritual gift of Pastor-Teacher, however, every believer receives a spiritual gift by God upon regeneration of their spirit.

Many do not experience or even know what those gifts might be at the time of their award, but it is a spiritual gift as opposed to a soulish or fleshly gift.

There is probably nothing wrong with a woman teaching Biblical history or grammar in a Sunday School class for children, but that is really an issue for the pastor-teacher and the administration of a particular flock/congregation and that is a legitimate authority when gifted by the Holy Spirit.

As the brother-in-law of an ordained female Presbyterian pastor (a self-proclaimed evangelical too) I have a serious problem with disobedience to scripture.

The Holy Spirit NEVER contradicts what He inspired, and the Holy Spirit inspried the whole bible, even 1 Timothy 2 and 3.

Yes. You applied something found in Revelations to something in a different book.

Doing that, BTW, violates the very rule you were citing ~ since that part of Revelations is not actually in the other book, you as much as added it to that book by citing it as an authority.

BTW, there are numerous formal discussions of that particular phrase and what it really means available all over the place.

Actually most Biblical scholars believe that Timothy wasn't even written by Paul. The topics and style of the letter suggests that it was written in the early 2nd century by a follower of Paul.

All believers are capable of witnessing or ministering to the world, but the spiritual gift of Pastor-Teacher is a different issue. That is a particular spiritual gift given by the Holy Spirit to some men.

Agreed, all scripture is inspired by God. Does inspired mean man can interpret it for himself or was some directed verbatim? I don't know. I assume man may have put it into his own words and some was verbatim as directed by God. I really don't know and only those who wrote the words know. Regardless, all is God's work.
