Just a suggestion for the FR powers that be (do we have a suggestion box?):
Can another posting section be added below "Title of Thread", such as "description", "subject" or "sub-title"?
I have noticed many duplicate postings are due not as much from failure to search, as failure to use original article titles in favor of a more descriptive thread. I think there is a place for both, and currently many posters will put their descriptive/subject text in parentheses after the title.
Unfortunately this is not common practice and not defined as proper method although it obviously allows searches to pickup both the title and the subject. Although "Keywords" tries to cover all the bases, for fast-breaking news and events, a quick title description helps weed through the articles. This is particularly helpful when local events are better identified as such by additional commentary following the title.
Just MHO.
I think you are being a bit optimistic ;)
On a related note... is there a way to search by keyword?
thoughts?
Yep...right on forum page you can search by title(date) ,title(score), poster and keyword.
There should be a way to rate the importance of threads. For example, how are we to know whether
"Brain gene shows dramatic difference from chimp to human"
or
"Study: Nuclear Blast At Port Could Kill 60,000"
first deserves our full attention?
Yes look at the drop down menu next to search.
no offense....
but is this that much of an issue?
to reformat for?
Other than for some interesting reading (many are rather humorous), "keyword" seems to be a waste without search-ability.
Please see posts 6, 7, and 9.
The reason for most of the duplicate posts here is
that most of the posters of duplicates are lazy and/or stupid.
This doesn't really seem necessary to me. I rarely post, but when I do, I first do a search to see if that story has been posted. Rather than search for the entire headline, I search for the main word in the headline. Then, I open a new window to compose my post in. Then I always preview the post to catch any wierd formatting. Just before I actually post the item, I search again.
It's easy to do. I know a lot of people don't do that, since there are so many duplicate posts, but it's not hard to avoid posting a duplicate. You do have to try, though.
For me, the worst thing is the number of vanity posts that would have been better placed in an existing thread.
It would be a much simpler task if the computer compared the "beginning text" or "title" to existing threads and if a match is found simply not post the article, with a note to the poster that "Already posted" had ocurred..........
But quite often the search results are not in date order
Already posted... ;)

Ah, I see it....the search from within a thread (such as at the top of this page),however, only allows title searches.
Have you tried FReepmailing John Robinson? Seems like a decent sort of a guy.....
