I seriously doubt I'll ever be able to muster even the slightest respect for Dr. Condoleeza Rice again.

This ceasefire resolution is pure garbage. On the bright side, Condi sure did look good giving her speech. Hey, if your gonna spoon feed the public slop, may as well look spiffy doing it.

In all fairness, we should acknowledge that Dr. Rice's actions are consistent with her background and her personal and professional history. For example, she has stated that her mentor was none other than Brent Scowcroft, a committed functionary of the globalist/stability/realpolitik wing of the "international community". She is CFR. She is an elitist, and truly believes in the UN and the concept of "multilateralism" as the best way to solve the world's problems.

Her actions are consistent with who she truly is, and our disappointments with her are simply the result of our own desperate need and determination to see her as we wish her to be.

Excerpts of Security Council Resolution

By The Associated Press

Excerpts from the U.N. Security Council resolution seeking to end the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah:

- Calls for a full cessation of hostilities based upon, in particular, the immediate cessation by Hezbollah of all attacks and the immediate cessation by Israel of all offensive military operations.

- Upon full cessation of hostilities, calls upon the government of Lebanon and UNIFIL as authorized by paragraph 11 to deploy their forces together throughout the South and calls upon the government of Israel, as that deployment begins, to withdraw all of its forces from Southern Lebanon in parallel.

- Emphasizes the importance of the extension of the control of the government of Lebanon over all Lebanese territory ... so that there will be no weapons without the consent of the government of Lebanon and no authority other than that of the government of Lebanon.

- Reiterates its strong support, as recalled in all its previous relevant resolutions, for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence of Lebanon within its internationally recognized borders, as contemplated by the Israeli-Lebanese General Armistice Agreement of 23 March 1949.

- Calls on the international community to take immediate steps to extend its financial and humanitarian assistance to the Lebanese people, including through facilitating the safe return of displaced persons and, under the authority of the Government of Lebanon, reopening airports and harbours.

- Calls for Israel and Lebanon to support a permanent ceasefire and a long-term solution based on the following principles and elements: a. full respect for the Blue Line by both parties; b. security arrangements to prevent the resumption of hostilities, including the establishment between the Blue Line and the Litani river of an area free of any armed personnel, assets and weapons other than those of the government of Lebanon and of UNIFIL; no foreign forces in Lebanon without the consent of its government; no sales or supply of arms and related materiel to Lebanon except as authorized by its government,

- Invites the Secretary General to support efforts to secure as soon as possible agreements in principle from the Government of Lebanon and the Government of Israel to the principles and elements for a long-term solution.

- Decides ... to authorize an increase in the force strength of UNIFIL to a maximum of 15,000 troops, and that the force shall, in addition to carrying out its mandate: monitor the cessation of hostilities; accompany and support the Lebanese armed forces as they deploy throughout the South, including along the Blue Line, as Israel withdraws its armed forces from Lebanon.

Dang...I didn't know Howlin had an "end of the world" thread..

I saw one the other day...where everyone was picking their outfit...but I don't know if that was it or not.

I NEVER would try to post a thread against Howlin...it is a "rule"... and she has the best ping lists going.

Well..it IS entirely possible that this Israel/Lebanon thing could be going until then...so we would need both threads anyway.

Could you do me a favor...I probably missed Howlin's ping..so could YOU ping me to her Aug 22nd thread??

I've read references to "Ellis" and FR and negative comments on tonight's thread. Who is he, who does he represent and why is he on BOR?

Thousands of Somalis gather in Mogadishu to protest ‘enemies of Islam’
(AP)

12 August 2006

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Thousands of supporters of Mogadishu’s new fundamentalist rulers held a rally in the capital after prayers, calling for a holy war against enemies of Islam in the Middle East, United States and around the world.

More than 2,000 people shouted “God is great!” and “Down with the enemies of Islam, wherever they are!” Many at the Friday gathering lashed out at Israel for its role in the deadly month long conflict with Lebanon.

“Look at what’s happening in the Middle East and the whole world is silent, and when Somalia was in the anarchy still the world was silent,” said Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, a leader of the Islamic militia that has seized Mogadishu and much of southern Somalia in recent months.

The United States accuses the group of harboring Al Qaeda leaders responsible for deadly bombings at the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998.

Friday’s protest came as a conflict monitoring group said Somalia is “the largest potential safe haven for Al Qaeda in Africa” - a dire warning in the wake of the foiled terror plot in London to blow up US-bound planes. Experts say the plot carried the hallmarks of Al Qaeda.

The report by the Brussels, Belgium-based International Crisis Group said that unless the conflict in Somalia is contained, it threatens to draw in “a widening array of state actors, foreign jihadi Islamists and even Al Qaeda.”

Somalia has not had an effective central government since warlords toppled longtime dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991 and then turned on each other, plunging the country into anarchy.

A transitional government was established two years ago with the support of the United Nations, but it has failed to assert power outside its base in Baidoa, 255 kilometers (150 miles) from Mogadishu.

At Friday’s demonstration in the capital, protesters said they were enraged at “enemies of Islam” in the Middle East, the United States and neighboring Ethiopia - which is Somalia’s longtime enemy. But the Somali government has asked for Ethiopia’s support, and witnesses have reported seeing Ethiopian troops arrive in Baidoa to protect the government.

“It is compulsory to join the holy war,” Yusuf Ali Siad, a member of the Islamic group, told The Associated Press on Friday.

A similar protest was held in neighboring Kenya, drawing about 300 people to Nairobi’s main mosque. The protesters, most of them young men, carried signs saying “Israel Stop Killing Our Brothers and Sisters” and “End America’s Terrorism of Army Invasion in Iraq.”

The conflict in Somalia has sent an average of 100 Somali refugees streaming into Kenyan refugee camps every day, according the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

“If the current rate of arrival continues, we can expect another 12,000 refugees by the end of the year,” the UNHCR said in a statement. The Dadaab camps in northeast Kenya already have some 134,000 refugees, most of them Somalis.

That WAS the thread where everyone was picking their outfits.

I didn't request a ping. Figured I'd be here and I'd look for that one. We should be able to find it easily that day.

"There is also no call for the release of Lebanese prisoners held by Israel or a demand for the immediate withdrawal of Israeli troops. Although the draft resolution emphasizes the need for the "unconditional release" of the two Israeli soldiers whose July 12 capture by Hezbollah sparked the conflict, that call is not included in the list of steps required for a lasting cease-fire."

I don't understand the last sentence; does anyone remember which post linked to a copy of the resolution?
