You are correct! He is the winner here. That should be obvious now.

I wonder how Gillerman feels tonight???

I bet he is embarrassed to be representing Israel..at least I hope so....I can't believe he approves of this sham.

she has no options. Bush has no options. they can't force Olmert to fight. the best they can do is try to spin it as a "success".

Brilliant.

With one exception. Mike Wallace (and all who think the way he does) can be added to #12.

My poor Dad cursed her out something fierce. I read him this and calmed him down. It's the only thing I have read so far that makes any kind of sense out of the whole U.N. deal.

More resolution [Rich Lowry]
Was just talking to a friend who was noting that there is intense anger toward Israel within the administration for botching the war. He thinks the attitude was, "What's the point of giving them more time when they do nothing with it?" He thinks it's the worst defeat for Israel since 1948. He also guesses that the reason that the French flipped against the first resolution wasn't so much the Lebanese reaction as the realization of how poorly Israel was faring militarily. His general rule when it comes to U.N. resolutions in the Middle East is that they either simply reflect the facts on the ground, or make the victor give away a little bit of his victory; they never let someone pull victory out of a hat from defeat. So Israel will utlimately get from this resoltuon what they won on the ground, which is to say not much.

The Israeli public is going to be enraged once they learn their Prime Minister sold out the boys for a meaningless peace of paper. Here's a guy who fought a half-hearted war, threw away young Israeli lives for land Israel won't hold and didn't even secure at least a promise to return the kidnapped Israeli soldiers to Israel. Plus, he gave Hezbollah the prize of Har Dov for its aggression, didn't get in writing a commitment to see Hezbollah disarmed and decided to forsake victory for the easy way out. Which he took. Man, if this is a victory, I'd hate to see what real defeat looks like. The People Of Israel have been used and thrown away by their leaders and their children have been killed.... for nothing. Olmert must not be allowed to continue as Prime Minister after what he just did.... and any minister in his Cabinet who accepts his recommendation to surrender needs to be made to go as well. Israel lost a war it could have won thanks to the short-sightedness, incompetence and stupidity of those trusted with the country's care. Throw 'em out!

At least CNN is reporting that Israel is making the most of this period, to pound the Hezzies.

I read the resolution and it is TRULY AWFUL. Gillerman could not possibly be happy in having to vote for this.

Some of the worst features are: there is NO MENTION WHATSOEVER of returning the kidnapped IDF soldiers; the agreement concedes Shebaa Farms to Lebanon; the UNIFIL mandate is extended to 31 August 2007; there are several loopholes that allow Hizb'allah to remain operative in Lebanon (as they are part of the so-called "government"); it contains a mandate for the "international community" to aid Lebanon in re-building southern Lebanon and providing humanitarian aid.

You can read that last part as most of the bill being footed by the U.S., i.e., you and me.

Of course, no aid for Israel...

This is an ABOMINATION.

Not everyone uses the middle east thread to discuss the latest developments in Israel.

That is an understatement, but I won't go into it. Also, there has been a lot of critical observation of the Bush administration on this forum, with vigorous defense as the comeback.

Agreed. Olmert is finished in Israel along with the rest of his government and NONE of these people must ever be allowed to hold high state office again. They have shown themselves unworthy of the trust reposed in them by their nation and they have broken it.

I'm thoroughly flummoxed.
I think there may be something to Rich Lowrey's comment that "...there is intense anger toward Israel within the administration for botching the war.". But it still doesn't sound like Bush or Rice or Bolten....they've never shown any faith in ceasefires.
This is NOT how Bush works. I still can't help but think something else is up...but I'm hanging on by a thread.
