A major terrorist plot to blow up planes in mid-flight has been disrupted by police, Scotland Yard says.
It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled on board aircraft in hand luggage.
During the night, police arrested a number of people in London after a counter-terrorist operation they said had lasted several months.
Police believe the attacks would have been particularly targeted at flights from the UK to the US.
The Department for Transport said security at all UK airports has been increased.
Passengers on all flights will not be allowed to take any hand luggage on to any flights in the UK.
Only the barest essentials - including passports and wallets - will be allowed to be carried on board in transparent plastic bags.
"Britons have already largely forgotten the 7/7 attacks and those attempted just two weeks afterwards.
I fear, however, that Britain is increasingly 'Spanish' in its reaction to these incidents..."

To Jerryem, very good observation, I have toured several Airbus plants and it amazes me at the lack of security, if I was wanting to do what these "martyrs" were hoping to do it would be so easy to install remote controlled devices in Airbus planes deep inside the airframes that any idiot could do it, I have talked of this risk to Airbus management and been laughed at,and as you point out there is a lot of Muslims present in these assembly factories,maybe with this alert someone will decide that it is time to do some "deep" research on all Airbus aircraft before it is to late.
We should all say a prayer thanking God for all those working to uncover and foil such plots...especially the ones we never knew and will never know about.
Not to mention the swill they have to listen to from the Dems who are desperate to convince us there is no threat....moveon!
Back in 2004 many, many passengers in the US were chatting about suspected dry runs being carried out on a number of airlines. My flight from Orlando to Chicago had me on edge. There were 5-6 arab looking men with paper lunchbags in the waiting area sitting together. When they boarded the plane they had seats all over the aircraft. Each on got up and used the 'restroom' midflight. I remember trying to figure out what could be used as weapons and resolving in my mind what I would do in the event of a hijack.
Needless to say nothing happened, but it does make one go hmmm....

This is operation BOJINKA back in action again
Bojinka was the '95 plot involving Khalid Sheik Mohammed and Ramzi Yousef in the Philippines, and was exposed after a Manila apartment fire led authorities to the laptop and bombmaking equipment. A Japanese business man was killed by an inflight explosion caused by a liquid bomb during Bojinkas test phase.
I've written about Bojinka here before, and the plots evolution into 911. I always suspected the original plan would be a revisited as an AQ "plan B" after 9/11.

Most short flights cancelled until 2pm GMT, but some longer flights still departing.
I guess we are being blackmailed here in the states because this WMD liquid, might already be here!

I am making a distinction between the peace-weenies on the left who want appeasement and the Leftist Romantics. The Leftist Romantics don't want peace. Lithium batteries are another possible menace. Short one out and it turns into a firebomb in seconds. Electronics have been barred from going in the passenger compartment for now, but sooner or later the laptop lobby will prevail and they'll be back.
