GM Camaro revival seen as early as 2008

General Motors Corp. plans to bring back the Chevrolet Camaro as a production vehicle, a published report says.

GM chairman and chief executive officer Rick Wagoner is expected to announce the return of the muscle car in a speech Thursday at an automotive conference in Traverse City, Mich., the Detroit Free Press reported yesterday.

It could be built as early as 2008, the newspaper reported, citing unnamed people familiar with the plans. GM spokesman Christopher Preuss said yesterday that he couldn't comment on the report.

GM had won praise for its Camaro concept, which was unveiled in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The 2002 model year was the last for an earlier incarnation of the Camaro, which began its run with the 1967 model.

I wish Toyota would look backward and re-introduce a Supra or MR2.

I like it. One of the few GM cars I'd own. And Retro-shmetro---it looks cool.

Ummm, how do you know? I personally avoid American cars (till now) cause I don't like their looks. This one, I would buy.

Don't forget your "Members Only" jacket.....

I still have one of those.

I keep it handy for when I'm changing oil and need to wipe my hands.

Check out Camaro sales figures and you'll understand why: the Camaro rarely sold more than a fraction of the Mustang numbers.

One reason Ford sold so many Mustangs is because most of the ones they sold were 6 cylinders and they sold a lot of 4 cylinders as well. That's Ok I guess if it keeps the car in production.

The biggest reason for the Camaros demise was that it was GM's only rear drive car left & that drove up the cost of production.

I have a '02 Camaro that has gone 75,000 with no problems. I also have a '65 Mustang Convertible. If they started making those again, they'd still probably outsell everthing else on the road.

I don't either. Is it a style thing, or are those vehicles safer from side collisions, making it a safety issue?

It's too easy for Toyota to take market share from GM and Ford. Why compete with Nissan, Mazda, Honda, etc.?

My wifes Roadmaster has 140,000 miles on it now . If they still made them i would buy a new one. Until then I will keep this one until the wheels fall off. What a car.

Not gonna fly. I would get in line to buy a new Camaro if the design were more retro as some of the designs that I saw were.

The market for "sporty" cars is quite limited.

Just as the market shifted from Probe to 200 SX to Mirage (only 1 winner of the hearts of sporty purchasers)....
there are only enough asses to support 1 config. of domestic sporty seat.

My Caprice has 108K, and my Roadmaster has 84K. Awesome cars. LT1-350 is loaded with power, and the Roadmaster just gave me 26.5 MPG on a recent trip to TN.

I was just thinking about that. There ARE some new side-impact regs, or soon will be. But I just don't know if that's it. Another possibility is aerodynamics.

We need American manufacturing to be strong.

You mean North American...this Camaro will be the finest Mexican-made car money can buy. ;)
