The 2006 midterm elections will be a disaster for the Republican Party -- unless a "cataclysmic event" saves the day.

That's the dire warning from political analyst Charlie Cook, who predicts in his "Off to the Races" column that the GOP's expected misfortune will result from a perfect storm of three factors:

Wow. Put him in the loser category in the competition for accurate August predictions in the November elections category.

Friend, walk or drive to the polls on Tuesday. Wednesday will be too late. Nevertheless, the smug bikely ecoconscious voters need to be told about the "Ride Your Bike to the Polls on Election Wednesday" movement.

Don't be discouraged. The bitching and griping is constant. Mostly it results in no shows during off year elections. Encourage your Republican friends. Listen patiently while Democrats blow off steam. Add to their pessimism and negativity if you feel Machiavelian. Don't argue with them, that encourages them to turn out.

There's a big difference between griping and bitching and going down to the polls, standing in line in the rain or snow and pulling the lever for the DemonRATs.

Hang in there, we'll euchre 'em.

Two reasons for the Euro's strength.
1) It's no longer the new kid on the block and for the currency investors need a diverse portfolio as well.

2) The Euro won't drop unless the US gets back to the balanced budget. The deficits are too big and we've been printing money to finance the spending and tax cuts.

Because of the Euro, the US can't do the same things with our currency that we used to do.

Right. Money has to come from somewhere.

Going with simple economics, our historically low gas taxes encourages people to live far away from work, buy big cars and not take public transportation. Low gas taxes are a form of social engineering as much as high gas taxes.

And this is all fine and dandy until the market pushes up the prices for gas.

Could anyone have imagined Iraq would not be the number one news story a month ago? It's barely covered by the media now. It will be interesting to see what will transpire if/when Castro dies, Iran's date with destiny is coming up (Aug 22), North Korea is still in the background (shots fired across border the other day)... The Reps need to remind people what the Dems will do if they're in charge: investigate and/or impeach the President. Does anyone think that will help the country? Does anyone think that would help the Dems in 2008? People might not like what's going on in Iraq, but I can't believe they think Bush isn't better than President Pelosi. That's their (Dems) dream.

W. has become his fathers's president. He has no program or policy any more. He does not aparently stand for anything. He is just business as usual.

Stagnant waters become toxic, polluted, turgid and breed mosquitos's. You have to have a program. You have to try to accomplish something. I read yesterday that the wall around this country on the Mexico border will not be built becuas only 29 Senators voted to fund it.I am not sure i am even gong to vote. I just cannot figure out what is going on in these peoples minds.

Exactly--anyone who would vote for a dim is voting for an agenda that is ruinous. Only the stupid, uneducated, and socialists vote for these people.

It is no longer enough for the politicians to feel our pain over gas prices.

Gas prices need to be taken off the pump. After all, energy has already been removed from the govt reported inflation figures. This is the next logical step. Out of sight, out of mind.

In its place, an equitable payroll tax could be deducted from every paycheck.

Just kidding.

When this wishful thinking fails to materialize, the Dhimmicrats scream election fraud.

Gotta love it!

The "experts" never seem to actually getting around to naming GOP losers. These rats will likely go down Herseth SD Marshall Ga, Barrow Ga, Melancon La. Edwards Tx. and Mollohan WV. Boswell's seat in Iowa can be a pick up as well. Brad Miller NC can go as well.

Charlie Rangel is not feeling so confident. He says he will quit if the Dems lose on another thread. Unless you want the country's business ignored and want impeachment, endless hearings etc. At the end, the enemy attacks one of our cities killing more people than 9-11. The GOP is imperfect, but it is our best option. In advance, I disagree with those who believe the GOP needs to be taught a lesson-timing is everything. We are at war with a vicious enemy who would consider the election of Democrats a sign of weakness.

Some Perception on Charlie Cook. In the Early summer of 2004 he predicted that George Bush would need a miracle in the shape of a Harry Truman like comeback to win the presidency. If you do an archive of Cook's site, you will see he predicted doomsday for the GOP in 2000 and 2002. He is a registered democrat also, like Sabato.

Maine, you need to buck up and realize today is AUGUST 2nd!!!!! It is not November 2nd, there is 3 months to go. In 2002 all people were talking about was the first bi- election for Bush' first term was historically bad. The GOP should lose seats, but then won seats.

Rigth Rokke, charlie Cook blew the 2004 Race by saying Bush would need a Truman comeback to win.

To the Doomsayers: give me a list of the 16 congressmen who will lose thier seats. Show me the polling that confirms this.

Otherwise, this is just so much summertime angst.
