From Tourists Streaming into Syria from Lebanon, post 47:

To: cinives

You all might find this damn funny, but my sorry ass is marooned in Beirut, where I have been working for the IMF. If anybody has any helpful suggestions on how I can get out of this war zone, I would be most grateful. Right now, the road to Syria is the only way out of Lebanon for anyone, including U.S. citizens, and the Israelis are bombing that road. I am NOT happy with the Israelis right now. I understand their concerns about their kidnapped soldiers but bombing the Beirut Airport was not going to help them in any way.

"bombing the Beirut Airport was not going to help them in any way..."
Yes it will.

But you can be fairly certain that they will NOT target you in an international hotel, they will NOT randomly lob unguided rockets into anybody's city and certainly not into a city that has promise of becoming a relatively neutral neighbor.

You are now engaged in someone else's war based on what were probably entirely unwarlike intentions - the phraise I learned for that was Xin-Loi.

Much as I loathe the State Department, their advice was probably best, and another FReeper's suggestion to hoard water was a good one as well. Flashlight & radio batteries are also likely to become premium items even if the hotel can keep its kitchen open.

Just hang in there and try to laugh it off (honest); You are going to make it out, sooner than you might imagine, and that's all good.

This thread is a waste of time.

What is your problem? If it's a waste of time, why do you keep coming back to it, and wasting your time?

Remember, state all your opinions in question form. They may be rhetorical, but it's politer, and gives you an out.

Be enthusiastic about hockey.

Try throwing in some bad French (or 'Quebecois') every so often.

Complain about taxes. If you are pretending you are from anywhere but southern Ontario, refer to the thieving, lying Liberal fatcats in Ottawa (not true at the moment, but most outsiders don't pay attention to Canadian politics). If you are from southern Ontario, pick 2 of the followinng groups and make disparaging remarks about them. British Columbians, Westerners, Northern Ontarians, Quebecois, Easterners, Newfoundlanders.

And remember...you still watch American tv.

One quick correction there fanfan, it's my understanding that the Canadian two dollar coin is referred to as as "TOONIE", *not* a "twoonie", that mispronunciation could be fatal in the wrong situation, if you know what I mean? ;)

In a pinch, I would recommend that RY2 pretend to be a deaf-mute, do NOT speak, but carry a note pad and communicate that way, and claim to be from Ireland.

Bless your heart, I know this is harrowing for you.

You are there....right there....now...in the middle of the action.

May God bless and protect you and get you to safety soon!

Here you go.

Prime Minister Harper with his family (from left to right): Rachel, Laureen and Benjamin.

What do we call her?

Laureen. We call him Stephen.

They are real people dedicating their lives to Canada and history.

I am humbled.
And happy. :-D

He needs to say "sore-ree", instead of "sawr-ree" for 'sorry'.

Oh my gosh! You're right!

Rebel, it's pronounced toony, like 'loon'ytunes.

In a pinch, I would recommend that RY2 pretend to be a deaf-mute, do NOT speak, but carry a note pad and communicate that way, and claim to be from Ireland.

A deaf mute from Ireland?

Who would believe that?

LOL!

I, like many others, can only offer prayers but you have those in abundance. May God bless you and keep you!

I wish rebel_yell2 luck.

However, I'm glad Israel isn't letting those terrorist thugs to get away with it. For the look of it, Israel is going to have a full scale war with the sponsors of terrorism. It's about time!

I'll be praying for them.

suggestions on things to keep with you in a situation like this

It's called a BOB- bug out bag. A truly good one probably wouldn't get thru airport security...but the airlines are now allowing knitting needles back on!

And don't forget, pronounce the word "process" as "pro-sess", not "prah-cess" as in America.

And to really convince them RY2, tell them about your trip to Mary-land in the U.S., pronounce it exactly that way, "Mary-Land", not the slurred U.S. version "Marilyn".

Personally, I'd undergo a valmorification procedure. Say 'Durka Durka, Mohammad Jihad' a lot too.

As long as RY2 can ask for a beer in sign language, it is definitely within the realm of believability. ;)
