As we went to press, the Israeli Army, which announced several days ago that it had halted a major military operation against terrorist bases in northern Gaza, was preparing to send a large military force back in to stop the continuing rocket attacks from Gaza which have made normal life in neighboring Israeli towns impossible. It looks increasingly doubtful that the events in Gaza will somehow be contained and that it will end up being little more than the latest skirmish in the longrunning dispute between Israel and the Palestinians. Iran, Syria and Hamas give every indication that they want the conflict to widen into a larger war. Nor does Israel seem to be shy to respond. Since Israel's founding in 1948, there have been eight Arab-Israeli wars: Israel's 1948 War of Independence; the 1956 Sinai campaign; the Six-Day War (1967); the War of Attrition (1969-1970); the Yom Kippur War (1973); the Lebanon War (1982); the first intifada (1987-92); and the second intifada, launched in September 2000. The first five of these wars involved (primarily) conflict between the Israeli military and the armies of neighboring Arab states. ..................................................... Jordan (which fought Israel tenaciously in the 1948 and 1967 wars) is deeply worried that it too is now in the terrorist crosshairs. The Hashemite Kingdom, which is being targeted by Hamas and Damascus, is said to be very worried about the possibility that Hamas and the Popular Resistance Committee (the group that kidnapped Cpl. Shalit) are seeking to create a rocket infrastructure in the West Bank, replicating what Hamas has created up in Gaza. In sum, the Shalit kidnapping may be setting into motion events that will trigger a wider war pitting Islamofascists against Israel

And what have we seen? The Palestinians are virtually given Gaza. What do they do? They elect an outright terrorist organization, Hamas, as their government and use this new autonomy as a base to launch attacks against Israel. As I heard Victor Davis Hansen say last night, they want cell phones, the internet, dialysis, and MRIs, but they cannot get past their hatred of the Jews, and will not accept freedom of speech, gender equity, and a host of other freedoms that we take for granted. To hell with them!
Israel against the rest of the middle east?? once Israel unleashes their military, it's all over in days..
....That tag line you have should be patented
Can we join in on this one? We can take Syria while Israel takes Lebanon and the Palis.
PLEASE, President Bush?
LOL!
Let it ride.
Yeah, but the problem is what does Israel do afterwards? How do they occupy countries with millions and millions of hostile people?
As I heard Charles Krauthammer say on some Fox show late last week,
...... No palestinian should be allowed sleep, until people can sleep in Israel.
If that doesn't work, you kill them.
yah. There's little doubt as to who will win another go-round with the Israelis. They won't hesitate to go all out when the time is right, especially if it is a state-sponsored attack against them.
The question remains how long it will be before Iran becomes involved in directly engaging the Israelis. What I mean is while they have been supporting the Palestinian groups behind the scenes with money, arms, IEDs, and tossing out a lot of inflammatory rhetoric, Iran has not taken direct military action against Israel like Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, et al, have. I wonder if the Mullahs have the stones to come out and publically declare War on Israel.
I think we can all agree that Hamas wouldn't last long if Iran wasn't supporting them. Ditto for the militant Shiites in Sadr City, Hezbollah, most of the Syrian army, name your favorite Islamic fringe terrorist group. The Israelis know that, and would love to take out the source of most of their national security problems...
The biggest problem here is how to keep it from going nuclear, and despite the rhetoric from some quarters about what a great idea that might be, nuclear war is nothing to wish for. If Israel gets pushed into a corner by being mobbed from different directions (like what is going on right now) things could get out of control very fast. I fear Israel may get pushed to the brink (again) while the US dicks around with the UN Security Council.
I can forsee the debate at the UNSC being suddenly interrupted by the news of simultaneous thermonuclear detonations over Qom, Tehran, Damascus, and southern Lebanon...
Serious business...
All these skirmishes are choreographed by Tehran to take attention away from their spinning centrifuges. Israel is now pre-occupied with fires all around, and if they succeed at putting them all out while the centrifuges have not produced enough material, then Tehran will light more fires.
We should take out and occupy Syria if only to show the world where Saddam sent his WMDs before our forces could catch up to them. I remember seeing aerial camera footage of very long Iraqi truck convoys headed from Baghdad to the Syrian border in the opening days of the war. Those hundreds of heavy military trucks weren't hauling Purina camel chow.
..They won't hesitate to go all out when the time is right, especially if it is a state-sponsored attack against them.
Funny thing that 'state sponsered' part, it's the words currently being used by the Israelies as the call up reserve divisions.
Just like the old days. Practice makes perfect, Israel.
