"Arab Americans Say Israel Targeting Civilians, Urge Ceasefire"
By Monisha Bansal
CNSNews.com Staff Writer
July 20, 2006
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "(CNSNews.com) - Several members of Congress and the Arab American Institute Wednesday called for an immediate ceasefire on the part of Israeli military forces in Lebanon. They accused Israel of targeting civilians and their civilized infrastructure, not Hizballah.
"The capture of Israeli soldiers by a Palestinian extremist group and [Hizballah] have served only to aggravate an already volatile situation, providing Israel with the pretext to justify its now three week old destructive campaign in Gaza and its massive devastation of Lebanon's infrastructure," James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute, wrote in an op-ed in the Detroit Free Press Tuesday. "Self-defense is one thing, but collective punishment is quite another matter."
Zogby elaborated Wednesday in Washington, D.C., saying that Hizballah was created because Israel chose to use military force instead of diplomatic efforts in 1982.
"What we learned in '82, what we should have learned in '82 is that if we don't solve the political issues that are underlying this crisis then ultimately those political issues and the anger and the despair that they cause will morph into other forms and come back and haunt you in the long term," Zogby said.
"We believe diplomacy still has an important role to play," he added.
U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), who is also Lebanese American, conceded that "Hizballah has been a cancer on Lebanon for a long time." But, he added: "We are not giving Israel a green light. All the parties are calling for a ceasefire, but we have to be realistic. You can't just have a ceasefire on one side."
"It is not in the world's interest for this conflict to continue, because if it continues it will only escalate," said U.S. Rep. James Moran (D-Va.). The Lebanese people are suffering and the majority of them have nothing to do with the conflict that is ensuing.""

"Hezbollah's Dangerous Ball Bearings"
By Michael Kraft
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "In a rather unusual story, the Reuters new agency reported that the Human Rights Watch criticized Hezbollahs practice of packing ball bearings into the rockets it fires at Israel as a violation of international humanitarian law and probable war crimes.
The Reuters report said that some of the Kutyusha rockets fired into Haifa Sunday and Monday contained hundreds of metal ball bearings that are of limited use against military targets but cause great harm to civilians and civilian property. The ball bearings lodge in the body and cause serious harm.
The Human Rights Watch, in a statement issued yesterday in New York, said attacking civilian areas indiscriminately is a serious violation of international law and can constitute a war crime
.Hezbollahs use of warheads that have limited military use and cause grievous suffering to victims only makes the crime worse.
The story was unusual in that it was one of the few that have reported that the terrorist groups attacking Israelis are not using only explosives but also pieces of metal intended to deliberately cause pain and suffering to victims who are not killed outright. The Hamas makers of the suicide bomb belts routinely pack the bombs with nuts and bolts and nails. There also have been reports that the metal fragments are sometimes dipped into a pesticide, in order to maximize the damage to the victims and make it more difficult for doctors to effectively treat their patients. However there has been little public reporting in the western media of this tactic, which causes torture to the victims who survive the original blast and additional agony for their families and friends."
I don't have the pictures handy, but we have seen posted here before X-rays of bomb victims, riddled with metal fragments. Glass is also used, since it is hard to see in X-rays. Charming, just charming. [ bitter sarc OFF ]
Rat poison ( anticoagulent ) is a common adulterant.
The Drive-By Media is loath to mention this, or anything else that would be an inconvienient truth, or conflict with their media template and prejudices.
Sometime between the 1967 and 1973 Arab-Israeli wars, the Israelis were switched from "plucky little Israel" to "brutal oppressors." And the mantlet of "victim" firmly annointed on the Arab side. I witnessed this transformation.

"US Muslim Group Accuses Israel of State Terrorism"
July 19, 2006
Vox Populi, Jim Kouri
by Jim Kouri, CPP
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A prominent national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group today called on the international community to intervene after at least 12 Lebanese civilians, including women and children, were killed in an Israeli attack on a convoy fleeing threats to destroy their village.
The fleeing civilians had reportedly sought protection from UN peacekeeping forces in the area, but had been turned away, according to American Muslims.
In a statement, the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said:
The international community must respond to this latest massacre of Lebanese men, women and children by taking concrete action to protect that nations civilian population and infrastructure from attack.
Israel has stated clearly, and demonstrated through violent actions, that it is attacking civilian targets in Lebanon in order to achieve a political goal. This is the very definition of state terrorism.
Our nation cannot maintain credibility in condemning acts of terror carried out by individuals and groups, while offering diplomatic cover and material support to a state that is engaged in a brutal campaign against an entire civilian population, said CAIRs Ibrahim Hooper.
Meanwhile, CAIR, considered the largest group in the US representing Muslims, has not issued a press release or made statements condemning Hezbollah or Hamas for their acts of terrorism that triggered Israels military response. They did, however, schedule press conferences in cities throughout the country in order to criticize President Bush for not pressuring Israel to cease fire."
Yep, I'm fully aware of (via reports and news articles) of how the bombs are packed and what they are packed with.
My sympathy goes out to the Israelis for all they have been through.
Mine too- one Israeli casualty is equal to 43 Americans ( based on population )-- they have a sea of enemies around them.

British citizen charged with conspiring to provide material support to terrorists
Indictment stems from lengthy probe by ICE, FBI and other agencies
NEW HAVEN, CT -- Kevin J. OConnor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that a federal grand jury sitting in Bridgeport, Connecticut, has returned a three-count Indictment charging SYED TALHA AHSAN, age 26 (DOB 09/21/79), of London, England, with participating in a conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists; providing, and aiding and abetting others in providing, material support to terrorists, and participating in a conspiracy to kill, maim or injure persons or damage property in a foreign country.
At the request of the U.S. Government, AHSAN was arrested earlier today at his residence in London by British law enforcement authorities. Subsequent to his arrest, the Indictment, which was returned on June 28, 2006, was ordered unsealed by United States Magistrate Judge Holly B. Fitzsimmons in Bridgeport.
Following his arrest, AHSAN appeared before a magistrate court in London, at which time he was ordered detained pending a bail hearing scheduled for next Wednesday, July 26, in the magistrate court in London. The court also noted, pursuant to the usual procedures, that a formal package from the U.S. Government seeking AHSAN's extradition to the United States would be due within sixty days, or on or before September 22, 2006. To that end, an official extradition request from the U.S. Government will be transmitted in due course to British authorities, and is expected to be served upon AHSAN shortly.
"These charges are the result of several years of investigative work by ICE and FBI agents in New Haven, NCIS agents, and several additional law enforcement partners here in the United States and overseas," U.S. Attorney OConnor stated. "This investigation is ongoing."
The Indictment alleges that, from approximately 1997 through at least August 2004, AHSAN, Babar Ahmad, an organization called Azzam Publications and others conspired to provide material support and resources to persons engaged in acts of terrorism through the creation and use of various internet web sites, e-mail communications, and other means.
The material support and resources consisted of expert advice and assistance, communications equipment, military items, currency, monetary instruments, financial services, and personnel, all of which were designed to recruit for and assist the Taliban and the Chechen Mujahideen, and to raise funds for terrorist activities in Afghanistan, Chechnya and other places. It is alleged that members of the conspiracy maintained accounts at a number of Internet Service Providers ("ISPs") and web hosting companies in the United States, including one headquartered in Connecticut. Babar Ahmad and Azzam Publications were previously charged by Indictment in the District of Connecticut in October 2004.
Among other things, the Indictment against AHSAN alleges that, in or about April 2001, AHSAN possessed, accessed, modified and re-saved an electronic document containing then-classified United States Navy plans of a U.S. Naval Battle Group operating in the Straits of Hormuz. The document is alleged to have set forth details regarding the composition, mission and capabilities of the various ships within the battle group and discussed the Naval Groups vulnerabilities to terrorist attack.
It is alleged that, in or about July 2001, a member of the conspiracy, through e-mail accounts associated with Azzam Publications, communicated with a U.S. Naval enlistee who was sympathetic to the views expressed on the Azzam family of web sites and referred to the October 2000 attack on the U.S.S. Cole as a "martyrdom operation." The e-mail encouraged the enlistee to "keep up the psychological warefare [sic]."
The Indictment further alleges that, in or about December 2003, Babar Ahmad was found in the possession of the electronic document containing the previously classified U.S. Navy plans and the Battle Group's vulnerabilities to terrorist attack.
U.S. Attorney OConnor indicated that the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Connecticut looks forward to working with law enforcement authorities in the United Kingdom in pursuing AHSAN's extradition to the District of Connecticut to face the pending charges. If extradited and convicted of the charges, AHSAN faces a maximum term of imprisonment of life. U.S. Attorney OConnor stressed that the indictment is only a charge and not evidence of guilt. The defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the Government's burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
This case is being investigated by a Task Force in Connecticut consisting of Special Agents of the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), law enforcement agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Joint Terrorism Task Force, the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation Division, the IRS-CI Electronic Crimes Program, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
U.S. Attorney OConnor praised the substantial efforts of law enforcement authorities from the Metropolitan Police Service's Anti-Terrorist Branch and the Extradition and International Assistance Unit, both within New Scotland Yard, whose efforts and assistance have been essential in the investigation in this case.
The case is being prosecuted by a team of federal prosecutors including Assistant United States Attorneys John Danaher, William Nardini and Stephen Reynolds from the United States Attorneys Office for the District of Connecticut; Special Assistant United States Attorney Mark G. Califano from the District of Connecticut; Trial Attorney Andrew Levchuk from the Computer Crimes and Intellectual Property Section of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, and Trial Attorney Alexis Collins from the Counter-Terrorism Section of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington.

"Homegrown Terror Suspects Accused of Plotting Attack on Atlanta Air Base"
Wednesday, July 19, 2006
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "ATLANTA Two men already accused of discussing terror targets with Islamic extremists were indicted Wednesday on charges of undergoing paramilitary training in northwest Georgia and plotting a "violent jihad" against civilian and government targets, including an air base in suburban Atlanta.
The new indictment accuses Syed Ahmed, a 21-year-old Georgia Tech student who was arrested in March, and Ehsanul Islam Sadequee, 19, of traveling to Washington to film possible targets, including the U.S. Capitol and the headquarters of the World Bank, and sharing the recordings with another alleged terrorist based in Great Britain.
Both men are U.S. citizens who grew up in Atlanta area. They previously were accused of traveling to Canada last year to meet with Islamic extremists to discuss "strategic locations in the United States suitable for a terrorist strike," including military bases and oil refineries, according to prosecutors."

SCO: Bin Laden is not in Central Asia
19.07.2006 17:57:31
Director of the Executive Committee of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS SCO) Vyacheslav Kasymov refuted the statements published by the western media suggesting that Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was hiding in Central Asia.
Several western media have recently published a statement by former U.S. anti-terrorist coordinator Richard A. Clarke who claimed that Osama Bin Laden might be hiding in one of the Central Asian states of the former Soviet Union, Somalia or Iran.
"The analysis of materials available at the SCO RATS indicates that the statement about Osama Bin Laden's possible presence on the territory of Central Asian region is unfounded," Kyrgyz state information agency Kabar quoted Kasymov.
The Head of the Anti-Terrorist Center said information available to RATS was confirmed by the heads of special services of the SCO member states. According to Kasymov, the representatives of the SCO security services think that Clarke's statement "aimed at discrediting the work of the anti-terrorist centers supporting security in Central Asia."
The Director of the RATS Executive Committee said the main threat for the region today were "the growing terrorist aspirations of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, particularly in the Ferghana Valley."
"Special services of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are taking all the necessary measures to prevent terrorist attacks on the territory of the whole region," he said.

"'Madarsas not involved in terror activities'"
[ 20 Jul, 2006 1639hrs ISTPTI ]
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "NEW DELHI: Strongly refuting that Islamic seminaries were involved in terrorist activities, a Muslim body managing more than 8000 madarsas all over the country today said such allegations were a "conspiracy by some large nations and their leaders" against the community.
"Indian madarsas have been involved in social work since the pre-independence days. There is no evidence to prove that they are breeding grounds for terrorists," said Asgar Ali Salafi, General Secretary of Markaze Jamiat Ahle Hadiz Hind (MJAHH).
Salafi, addressing a press conference called to announce a symposium on madarsas to be held here on July 23, said some anti-social elements are using the name of madarsas for their activities and the schools should not be branded as anti-national. "

Things overall seem quieter than previous days. Fewer rocket attacks. More infantry skirmishes along the border, but nothing serious yet.
Overnight Action
Hezbollah denies any leaders were in bunker hit by 23 tons of bombs yesterday. Following the attack, Hizbullah released a statement via its al-Manar TV that Israel in actuality targeted a building under construction, not the terror organizations bunker, adding the bombs were dropped on a mosque that was being built, nothing more. However, the Hezbollah leader who has been very visible in the past, is clearly laying low now, either dead or hiding.
Hizbullah built mass bunker network
IDF fighters went through long hours of battle in the Avivim area Wednesday. The battles took place during an operation of an elite IDF unit against terrorists near the community of Avivim north of Safed, a few hundred meters inside the Lebanese territory.
The force was operating in the area in order to strike a Hizbullah bunker in which arms and rockets were being stored. The soldiers waited in the area since the morning hours, before encountering the terror cell in an area in which an IDF post once existed, which looked out over the area.
Hizbullah terrorists were hiding out in the fortified underground bunkers some 40 meters (roughly 120 feet) underground, along with mass weapons caches, the officer said.
Gaza
Israel also struck targets in Gaza, particularly 3 tunnel complexes.
UN Actions
The UN is threatening war crime actions against Israel as a result of the current war against Hezbollah. However, in a rather unusual story, the Reuters new agency reported that the Human Rights Watch criticized Hezbollahs practice of packing ball bearings into the rockets it fires at Israel as a violation of international humanitarian law and probable war crimes.
Evacuations
Foreign nationals continue to exit Lebanon with no interference from either Israel or Hezbollah.
Rocket Attacks
It seems that the tempo of rocket attacks against N. Israel has dropped off a bit.
