SCO: Bin Laden is not in Central Asia
19.07.2006 17:57:31
Director of the Executive Committee of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS SCO) Vyacheslav Kasymov refuted the statements published by the western media suggesting that Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was hiding in Central Asia.

Several western media have recently published a statement by former U.S. anti-terrorist coordinator Richard A. Clarke who claimed that Osama Bin Laden might be hiding in one of the Central Asian states of the former Soviet Union, Somalia or Iran.

"The analysis of materials available at the SCO RATS indicates that the statement about Osama Bin Laden's possible presence on the territory of Central Asian region is unfounded," Kyrgyz state information agency Kabar quoted Kasymov.

The Head of the Anti-Terrorist Center said information available to RATS was confirmed by the heads of special services of the SCO member states. According to Kasymov, the representatives of the SCO security services think that Clarke's statement "aimed at discrediting the work of the anti-terrorist centers supporting security in Central Asia."

The Director of the RATS Executive Committee said the main threat for the region today were "the growing terrorist aspirations of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, particularly in the Ferghana Valley."

"Special services of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are taking all the necessary measures to prevent terrorist attacks on the territory of the whole region," he said.

"'Madarsas not involved in terror activities'"
[ 20 Jul, 2006 1639hrs ISTPTI ]

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "NEW DELHI: Strongly refuting that Islamic seminaries were involved in terrorist activities, a Muslim body managing more than 8000 madarsas all over the country today said such allegations were a "conspiracy by some large nations and their leaders" against the community.

"Indian madarsas have been involved in social work since the pre-independence days. There is no evidence to prove that they are breeding grounds for terrorists," said Asgar Ali Salafi, General Secretary of Markaze Jamiat Ahle Hadiz Hind (MJAHH).

Salafi, addressing a press conference called to announce a symposium on madarsas to be held here on July 23, said some anti-social elements are using the name of madarsas for their activities and the schools should not be branded as anti-national. "
