Editor's note: On the evening of July 17, 1996, at 8:19 p.m., TWA Flight 800, a Boeing 747, took off from Kennedy Airport, bound for Paris. At 8:31 p.m., over 730 people watched Flight 800 explode, killing all 230 of the people aboard.
Not long afterwards, millions of Americans watched their televisions in fascinated horror as search and rescue crews looked for survivors among the flaming debris. Only dead bodies were recovered.
Flight 800 is mostly an ugly memory for people these days. The U.S. government issued an explanation that a fuel tank had somehow exploded. Yet, they flatly denied any evidence existed of foul play, including the possibility that Flight 800 had been blown out of the air by a missile.
All but a few journalists accepted the government's version of events. Few bothered to investigate the numerous eyewitnesses, the radar records and the physical evidence that all suggested a strikingly different explanation of Flight 800's untimely demise. And those few who did question the government's version were made to look like fools or, worse, thrown in jail and prosecuted as criminals for meddling in an official investigation.
What really happened to Flight 800? ....

Yes, every video disappeared after being confiscated. Hmmm, but then that is normal.
Please explain to me why the Air Nat'l Guard was "dropping flares" during an exercise as stated by an ANG Major at the time of the Flight 800 incident
I read the book First Strike, and let me tell you, it is very convincing. Of course, I believed it was terrorism all along. Bill Clinton did not want any problems on his watch and he covered it up. Read that book for all of the details. It is just despicable!
Why should this topic be forbidden? I don't get it.
I tell you what...if we could eliminate the politics from the argument and proceed in an atmosphere of honest inquiry, I'd be much happier.
But then, I'm forgetting where I'm posting this. =]
And remember this happened shortly before the Olympics in Atlanta. Now do you think Clinton would want the rest of the world to think he could not protect our airspace before such an event? And there was election coming up later in the year.
They all pretty much fly the same.
Remember it lost a lot of weight also.
Would the flares look like a streak of light?
This is one of my favorite subplots in this conspiracy. Does anyone really believe for one second that the media would clam up about THE most significant news story to hit this country in the decade prior to 9/11? And nobody in the viewing audience taped any part of this fabled video when it was shown? Millions of viewers watching one of the biggest stories of the year, yet only a lucky few remember watching what would obviously be clear cut evidence of a missile in flight, and nobody has a copy. And to this day, nobody in the printed media has ever discussed the video shown to millions.
I remember watching the news reports on that evening very clearly. I remember the fire on the water, and watching boats moving among the debris. But despite being a military pilot with a lot of interest in the topic, I don't remember anything remotely like a video showing a missile launch. Nor were we given any intelligence briefings that mentioned anything like that, despite getting briefings on all the possible terrorist considerations involving the incident. Yet, I am supposed to believe the media had in its possession a video showing a missile in flight, which it showed to the viewing public only once before all traces of the video were removed from public access forever.
Someone has seen "Men in Black" a few too many times.
An aircraft with an upward vector does not need power to climb. TWA 800 was climbing at the moment of the explosion and then the nose of the aircraft pitched up, giving it even more upward momentum. A climb of 1700 feet is not that significant in an aircraft traveling with the momentum of a 747.
Both 747's and 737's have flown and even landed with huge portions of their fuselage torn off. And TWA800 did tear apart very shorty into the event.
Not only is it NOT normal. It is completely unbelieveable.
I dropped flares on a vast majority of the training flights I flew with the ANG. It is completely routine and part of training.
Where does the 1700 feet come from? The height gain was reported in the 3 - 4 thousand range. Even so, the angle change for 1700 or 3000 - 4000 feet is small compared to the 13000 feet initial altitude. Would hardly explain witnesses statements that object went upward in some cases from the surface.
Big difference between part of side coming off and drag resulting from nose section being removed.
How much will the drag change vs. the loss in weight. Is there a formula for that?
It was interpolated from radar data and debris fields that were used to reconstruct the path of flight after the initial explosion.
"The height gain was reported in the 3 - 4 thousand range. "
Not by the NTSB, who conducted the investigation. They estimated the aircraft climbed 1200-2200ft.
"Would hardly explain witnesses statements that object went upward in some cases from the surface."
Very few of the witnesses reported seeing anything rising from the surface. And none of them reported seeing the following....
"Investigators determined that if witnesses had observed an actual missile attack on TWA flight 800 (beginning about the time that an airborne missile would have become visible to the time that the wreckage from TWA flight 800 fell into the ocean), they would have seen the following: (1) a light (the burning of the missile motor) ascending very rapidly and steeply for about 8 seconds (this rapidly moving light, which would have been visible for at least 12 nm575 from the launch point, would not descend like a firework or flare); (2) the light disappearing576 for up to about 7 seconds;577 (3) upon a missile (or warhead fragment) striking the airplane and igniting the fuel/air vapor in the CWT, another light (flames coming from the CWT), moving considerably slower and more laterally than the first light (although ascending somewhat for a short time), for about 30 seconds; (4) this light descending while simultaneously developing into a fireball falling toward the ocean."
