Cantwell's lead over McGavick nearly gone Latest poll shows senator losing ground to challenger

Dwindling voter support for U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell's re-election bid has put her in a statistical toss-up with her Republican opponent, according to a new poll announced Wednesday.

Rasmussen Reports, an independent national polling firm, said a survey of 500 likely Washington voters June 13 showed the Democratic incumbent leading challenger Mike McGavick 44 percent to 40 percent. The margin of error was plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

The RINOs are a huge problem for the conservatives and libertarians among us.

That has to be one of the most nonsensical statements I've ever come across on FR. Libertarians are, by definition, not Republicans. Or, if a Libertarian (e.g., Ron Paul) happens to run and win as a Republican, he or she is a genuine Republican in Name Only.

BTW, another thing "real" conservatives happen to have trouble wrapping their minds around is this: It's called the Republican Party for a reason. Although many Republicans are conservatives of one stripe or another, as an entity the Republican Party always has embraced a broader coalition of voters. Most of the biggest Republican names of the past would not qualify as conservatives, as many people here on FR seem to define the term.

Libertarianism is often at odds with both Republicanism and modern-day conservatism. In fact, Libertarianism often has more in common with Leftist ideology.

Only a "moderate" (read liberal leaning) conservative would whine about "rino bashing". rino's are dems in conservative clothes. I live in Ohio and you can be sure I will NOT be voting for DeWHINE

It's a long time 'til November. I'm trying to remain optimistic.

Elections usually are won or lost on voter turnout. I hope Republicans -- and that includes the entire spectrum from hard Right to more centrist -- are smart enough to turn out in droves for Santorum.

Please define RINO (no the acronym; I know what it means).

The primary is in early August...much to my disappointment the Republicans here didn't get behind a single candidate and so we must wait until August to see. I don't know what truth there is to this but there are those who say the RNC stepped in and pushed another candidate to enter the race when a black Republican, Keith Butler, wasn't getting the traction they wanted. So as it now stands we have Butler and the other guy battling it out for the bid while Stabenow sails along above the fray.

regarding the minmum wage:

"The measure drew the support of 43 Democrats, eight Republicans and one independent. "

which means when you write "The RINOs and their friends (46 of'm) as recently as yesterday voted to raise the minimum wage in two steps over 18-months. I had to rely on a few hardcore Rs plus a crap load of RATs (53 of'm) to prevent this alternative"

YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HELL YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.

rino's are dems in conservative clothes.

the real rinos are the ones who bolt from the party because of some single issue.

"It's funny how you RNC lovers want conservatives to support your RINOs, but real conservatives running for Senate like Katherine Harris and Dick Mountjoy in California 'can't win.'"

BUMP to that.

Is this what you're talking about, sefarkas?

"Wednesday, the Senate voted down a Democratic proposal to raise the minimum wage, by a vote of 52 to 46, and also struck down a Republican version that included provisions the Democrats consider poisonous."

"the real rinos are the ones who bolt from the party because of some single issue."

So if the GOP suddenly en masse decided that it was necessary to raise taxes 50%, you'd be okay with that. Or if the GOP decided to stop being the 'big tent,' and went forcefully pro-abortion, that'd be fine with you. Or if the GOP decided that it really, really wanted to abrogate the 2nd Amendment and pass a national registration act for all firearms, yer peachy keen with that, too.

Or is that incorrect? Are there some issues where you would draw the line...or not?

Chafee voted with the Dems on the war today. I would be happy to see him gone, preferably by a loss in the primary, but if he loses to another Dem, that would be fine, too. He would only be useful if the Senate was 50/50, but if it was, I have no doubt he would switch sides.

>> you are an idiot for posting this. out of the 44/45 democrat senators, I can not think of 1 that is better than dewine or chaffee <<

Really? Let me help you out on this one. American Conservative Union ratings:

Ben Nelson (D-NE)
2005 - 60%
2004 - 52%
Lifetime - 53%

Linc Chafee (R-RI)
2005 - 12%
2004 - 40%
Lifetime - 37%

Linc Chafee is so liberal the following DEMOCRAT Senators ALL voted to the RIGHT of him in 2005:

Blanche Lincoln (D-AR)
Make Pryor (D-AR)
Tim Johnson (D-SD)
Ken Salazar (D-CO)
Bill Nelson (D-FL)
Ben Nelson (D-NE)
Evan Bayd (D-IN)
Carl Levin (D-MI)
Mark Dayton (D-MN)
Jeff Bingaman (D-NM)
Kent Conrad (D-ND)
Byron Dorgan (D-ND)
Robert Byrd (D-KKK)
Herb Kohl (D-WI)
Russ Feingold (D-WI)

Would you like to go through that list, bill by bill, showing Chafee voting WORSE than several liberal Democrats "when it counts"?

Oh, spare the me "he'll vote to keep the GOP in charge of the chamber so the rest of his votes don't matter". If that's your crietia for supporting candidates then you were probably overjoyed when Jumpin' Jim Jeffords won re-election and betrayed us a few monthes later. Chafee has an "R" next to his name out of family tradition only. He is chomping at the bit to do Harry Reid's bidding on everything.

If a 12% conservative rating is "acceptable" to you, then you as well cheer on Hillary's re-election bid. She voted idential to your hero Linc Chafee last year.

Either Steven Laffey is nominated for that seat or the general election will be between two liberal Democrats.

Let's worry about the RINO's after we have a comfortable cushion.

67 Republican Senators would be sweet.

you are an idiot for posting this. out of the 44/45 democrat senators, I can not think of 1 that is better than dewine or chaffee. Lieberman is a maybe, but that is it.

Ben Nelson D NE.

I hope RINO's become extinct. I'd rather have a smaller but more cohesive majority. Chafee's an addled selfrighteous prick. He'll likely be the next Jumpin Jim Jeffords if the Republican majority is slim.

I notice both of you cite ben nelson.

In post 75 I notice the lifetime acu rating is 53 for nelson who is being dragged kicking and screaming to the right by a red state constituency while chaffee has a lifetime acu of 37 while representing a blue state.

Put chaffee in NB and nelson in RI and you would get a result where nelson would be worse than chaffee, probably much much worse.

for some reason, you guys think tom delay could win hands down in VT.

Your bashing of alledged rinos is off base because the "rinos" are loyal republicans, while you are not.

Conrad Burns has a very difficult reelection campaign going. There's a very good chance that Jon Tester will beat him. Then both of Montana's senators will be Dems. The Dems are really making headway in this state.

Oh well. There's only 900,000 of us here.

Republican in name only (RINO) means that the person calling him/herself Republican only votes with the Republican majority when they see some personal good accruing to themselves. They always have their eyes on the next election and each vote they make is weighed by what it will mean to their personal popularity. In other words, integrity is only a nine letter word to them.
