Did Time Leak Critical Information?
Time Magazine/One Percent Doctrine ^ | 6/19/06 | LS

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I haven't seen it posted in exactly this way: In the new issue of Time (but already aluded to last week in USA Today), Ron Suskind's excerpt about the planned AQ attack on U.S. subways he reveals this:

"There was a source from within Pakistan who was tied tightly into al-Qaeda management. Call him Ali. . . . . Whatever Ali's motivations, his reports--over the preceding six months--had been almost always correct, including information that led to several captures. . . . .He told his CIA handlers that a Saudi radical had visited bin Laden's partner al-Zawahiri, in January 2003."

The rest of the article reveals that we have MULTIPLE "assets" inside al-Qaeda.

Now, while this is very, very good news in one sense---I thought "we didn't have any human intel?" That "it was impossible to get 'inside al-Qaeda?'"---on another level this is very troubling.

Everyone knows now that Ali is Pakistani and had connections to these people. Time/Suskind let the cat out of the bag, and now breaking up future attacks will be harder.

Just wonderful....we don't need to know this stuff...

Loose lips sink ships.

Which the MSM evidently thinks is a good thing.

"This just in! Sources in Washington confirm that Gen. Eisenhower has determined that the invasion of Europe will take place in Normandy! A firm time table has not yet to set, partially due to weather concerns, but it appears that early June 1944 would be the best time for German reserves to be in place in Northwestern France!"

Great poster. This guy Suskind strikes me as the lowest kind of slime, exposing national secrets to get a book published. Now, I could be wrong, and maybe "Ali" was already finished and they had already pulled him, but I fail to see how this could in any way help us to put out this info.

Whatever Ali's motivations....

You see, when someone is helping the United States, the media must question their motives.

When they betray us, the media needs to understand their hatred.

I agree with your assessment of Suskind. But what if he was provided this information as a way for the bad guys to go nuts looking for the insider. How about the start eating their own looking for them. With all the computers, thumb drives and arrests they will have a hard time figuring who it is.

"but I fail to see how this could in any way help us to put out this info."

Al Qaeda knows that we've infiltrated their cells (e.g. killing Zarqawi).

Now they have to scramble to find their leaker. Odds are that they will kill many of their own loyalists long before finding the actual leaker, too.

If this is an unauthorized leak, you have a good point.

OTOH, we aleady have all sorts of panic and paranoia in the AQ ranks: that we can intercept all communications; that we can get into passworded websites and message boards and also into email accounts and read the dead drop draft files; that we have "Magic Dust" nano RFID devices that look like ordinary dirt and can tag anyone for surveillance; that we are very close to some sort of invisibility tech; that we have loads of informers among the Iraqi population.

How many people named Ali, Pakistani or otherwise, actual portion of a name or nom du guerre, are there in the Muslim world, where we are told, every young male is an Islamic fighter? Let them waste their time being suspicious of each other. IMO, it is more likely to disrupt them than to hurt some actual operative.

Something about this entire poison-in-the-subway story rings strangely to me. Zawahiri called it off? The Arabic name for the device translates as "the invention"? This rather simple device is "the holy grail of terrorism"? Most of the members of the cell are dead or in detention? Schumer is immediately using this info to pimp for more anti-terror funds for NYC, not when the book was in pre-release, but right after the stories about it break, not only in the MSM, but in an exclusive excerpt in Time?

I haven't read every word of this story and I won't pay a dime to read anything by Susskind, but, IIRC, it was supposedly three years ago. Is there any really solid outside attribution on all of this? Susskind hates Bush. Time hates Bush. Supposedly Bush and Cheney saw the device? Did we capture one? Was there a terror alert at that point in time? I seem to remember some contretemps on the left about then over phony alerts designed to bolster Bush's poll ratings in advance of the 2004 election.

I could be dead wrong, but this all seems orchestrated to me.

Sorry but if 'Time' had the information someone else leaked it.

Hopefully someone who is 'f^$@ing with their heads'.

I saw this guy on The Today Show today and I learned Cheney is more dangerous than AQ.

The MSM is full of nothing but toothless idiots that's just dumb enough to be dangerous. It's just amazing that anyone within the government would give these idiots any info.

I did consider this; and also that perhaps "Ali" has already been extracted. But the article implied we still have people "inside." So . . . if it's a lie, fine, but if true, this guy has caused AQ to turn the room upside down looking for the mole.

Yeah, I've thought of that. However, I do NOT think "Zawhiri called it off" unless some of the Canadian group or the others we just busted had something to do with it. They don't "call off" terror attacks unless they think they will get caught---and even then, only if they think that by getting caught it will unravel the network.

Right! Just think of a room full of AQ looking at each other wondering who is the rat. I hope they distrust each and everyone of their brothers and end up shooting each other.
