Constitutional Amendment on Marriage Fails

Wednesday, June 07, 2006 WASHINGTON — A constitutional amendment to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman stalled Wednesday in a 49-48 vote, but conservative backers say they are pleased to have had the vote nonetheless.

"For thousands of years, marriage — the union between a man and a woman — has been recognized as an essential cornerstone of society. ... We must continue fighting to ensure the Constitution is amended by the will of the people rather than by judicial activism,” said Senate Majority leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., after the vote.

A constitutional amendment needs two-thirds votes to pass, but first had to get through the procedural cloture vote, which requires 60 senators to agree to end the debate and move toward final passage.

Shy 11 votes to go to a final debate, few crossed the political aisle to vote against their party's majority position. Republican Sens. John McCain, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, Judd Gregg, Arlen Specter, Lincoln Chafee and John Sununu voted against the cloture vote. Democratic Sens. Ben Nelson and Robert Byrd voted for it, as they did in 2004. Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel and Demcratic Sens. Chris Dodd and Jay Rockefeller were absent.

They didn't try, the "try" was a lie. Really trying implies a possibility of success, there was no possibility, the "try" was all a show. It was all just to make people forget how the GOP senate rolled over on amnesty.

It shoed nothing, except their willingness to throw up distractions to take bad headlines that might cost them votes off the frontpage and replace them good headlines that might get them votes.

McCain is a politian, he knows he needs to pander, and his weakest score is among hard conservatives, so he panders to the religious right because that's where most of the hard conservatives are. But when push comes to shove he knows his real base is on the left, thus this lefty vote.

His vote today didn't hurt him at all. Anybody that is going to vote against him because of this vote was already going to vote against him because of McCain-Feingold and numerous other issues.

Now tell me how you think slavery is necessary in a free society, and kindly point me towards a quote of a "founding father" where he says that slavery is a moral necessity.

And then, perhaps you'd like to point out how "all men are created equal" fits into your assertion that the founding fathers of the United States of America were pro slavery.

I read Michael Reagan's book about the incident more than 10 years ago.

His honesty about the issue is one of the things which drew me closer to the Republican party in my idealogy.

IMHO, this is about preservation of our NATION... if we want to continue to recieve favor from God, our LAWS must be consistent with His divine order.... we are not "regulating" personal behavior.. people are still free to do whatever they want.. under this consitutional ammendement they just can't call what they do marriage... pretty simple IMHO.

FMA will prevent homosexuals that choose to engage in homosexual sex while living with their sex partner from getting a societal handout for doing so...

But why should HETEROsexuals choosing to engage in HETEROsexual sex while living with their sex partner be entitled to a "societal handout" for doing so?

no this is NOT a band aid fix.

This is a legitimate constitutional fix which neutralizes another Roe v Wade situation.

This prevents loonies form one state like Mass. imposing via FFC upon the other states.

If you were serious, you would realize this amendment preserves the rights of states against the low level state judge appointments of the other states.

Good. Now perhaps the Senate can move forward with more pressing matters, like terrorism and illegal immigration and abolishing the death tax.

If the United States turns into Sodom, such things won't mean much anymore.

Don't believe so. As I said earlier, the Senators vote all the time on legislation they know will not pass.

Often it takes many "tries" before they have success. Over time, it gets the process rolling and eventually the thing gets done.

I know there is a cynical faction out there that believes the vote was ONLY to get national attention off negative news. True, it achieves this purpose, but it's essential to move on other issues besides immigration. The marriage issue is also an essential issue IMO.

My husband sees McCain as the most dangerous one of all. He is played the hero and maverick but has his own agenda and it's all about personal power without any real moral convictions to back it up...and outright betrayal has been his main game for years. And we in AZ are stuck with him it seems.

There may not be a place on this forum for a moderate blue state fiscal conservative like myself, sorry to say.

As long as you keep letting your homosexual agenda rise to the surface then your ZOT clock is rapidly counting down.

In essence, this vote helps eliminate the death tax since one can now marry their own parents when an estate transfer needs to take place.

The infamous cloture vote. So much for a simple majority.

This is not an issue of who gets or does not get any compensation from society.. it is really about what society defines as a marriage...or what marriage is NOT

I hope you are right, that is the only thing that will get me back to the voting booths.

Society rewards the institution not the individual.

Homosexuality is about the hedonistic gratification of the individual and thus zero benefit to society.

Marriage is about propogating and promoting the best model for the future of society. Thus even the childless couple which lives in marriage promotes society because they can SEAMLESSLY raise a child as their own without the child knowing.

Homosexuals are a mere sexual fetish. Meaning nothing, contributing nothing.

Society has a duty to promote those institutions which ensure the future AND discourage those acts which offer nothing for the future.

Judges won't let them do that. If voters in the states pass laws and restrictions on this abomination, the courts immediately overturn the balloting. Why do you think they were doing it in the first place.
