JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — It began quietly, when a statistical anomaly pointed to a mysterious syndrome that attacked the immune systems of gay men in California. No one imagined 25 years ago that AIDS would become the deadliest epidemic in history.

Since June 5, 1981, HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, has killed more than 25 million people, infected 40 million others and left a legacy of unspeakable loss, hardship, fear and despair.

Its spread was hastened by ignorance, prejudice, denial and the freedoms of the sexual revolution. Along the way from oddity to pandemic, AIDS changed they way people live and love.

Open sores on their bodies are a regular thing there and they easily transmit disease that way.

With open wounds, you can hug and transmit it even.

We can in no way relate to the hygiene issue there, but it for sure isn't all Aids due to stuff like San Francisco at all.

I've housed a priest from Ghana Africa before and he gave me the whole deal on what is happening there in Africa with tribal warfare and Aids.

Guys mostly got it from adultery, pass it to the wives and rape the girls out of rumor of cure.

Yeah there is some homosexual sourced there, but nothing on the level compared to the United States with Aids.

Because someone is from Africa does not make him an authority on epidemiology.

There is a greater incidence of heterosexual aids in Africa because men contract it from intercourse with other men and then bring it home to their wives and the those they rape. They are more bisexual in their promiscuity than San Fransiscans---although it is very common here too.

The primary transmission of aids in the U.s and Africa for males is anal sex.

Africa does have a huge percentage of the male population engaging in homosexual sex.

The men simply don't acknowledge their participation in it.

Don't forget that anal intercourse also occurs in hetrosexual relationships. I'd guess a large percentage of AIDS-spreading incidents assigned to "hetro sex" is actually due to that.

Africa doesn't have enough AIDS and HIV test, so everyone who comes into the clinic with weight loss,cough, vomiting, etc. is classified as having AIDS or HIV. Yet alot of the illnesses stem from polluted water.

Gay sex = disease and death. Government should not endorse gay sex by legalizing gay marriage. The law should only recognize marriage between a man and a woman. Congress should view gay sex for what it is - a threat to public health.

Well, I'm a Westerner, and I am very clean indeed. It is not so much a cultural leaning, really, but a means of warding off the poxes that beset those who are lukewarm about hygiene. You should see me prep poultry! They make fun of my fastidious ways, but I worked in a hospital five years and connected some dots.

AIDS, IMHO, is the only disease in history to be treated not as a health issue, but as a human rights issue. That's why it's an epidemic these days.

From what I read, it is anal sex in hetero's that
is spreading most of the aids in Africa...
"plain vanilla" sex is not safe, but has a much lower
rate of transmission..
There was a study in married, monogamous couples and one
group of married couples practiced vanilla sex,(i.e.
vaginal), and the other group included anal sex.
The outcome after one year, was that 22% or so of the anal
group had documented transmission of HIV, while the other
group had a much lower rate. Sorry, I cannot remember the
reference, but the article appeared in a refereed medical
journal some time ago. ( I think it was New England Journal
of Med,) but I cannot be sure.

Actually , no one has documented where the first
aids transmission occured. One theory was that
the SIV (simian immunodeficiency virus) mutated in
a monkey, and some of the workers down in the jungle,
decided to have "bush meat" for lunch, and somehow, SIV
now mutated to HIV, survived the cooking, and the digestive
juices, and voila!
