As Morris has written in the past: "By moving away from English-only policies and reaching out to Hispanics...."
Bush said tonight:
I believe that illegal immigrants who have roots in our country and want to stay should have to pay a meaningful penalty for breaking the law
to pay their taxes
to learn English
and to work in a job for a number of years. People who meet these conditions should be able to apply for citizenship but approval would not be automatic, and they will have to wait in line behind those who played by the rules and followed the law.
By virtue of having asked that question, it's obvious you don't know the first thing about American politics.
Now, if it were a cheap hooker, that would be a different story.
Not to me, he's not.
Continued unlimited influx of illegals are, for the most part, Democrat votes. Sooner or later, they'll be either granted legal status, or they'll just vote illegally, like they do everything else. They're doing low paying jobs, and the vast majority of poor people vote Democratic, because they're the ones who promise to give them more "free" stuff.
Cutting off the flow of illegals, 1) cuts off the flow of Democratic votes, and 2) secures conservative and Reagan Democrat votes. I think I read a statistic that 53% of Hispanics favor the enforcement-only House bill. Everyone else favors it 3-1.
Yeah, he's right about the fact that its all about politics and votes to keep the elite 'representatives' in office. Nothing to do with them that brung 'em to the dance.
Wonder how much he got paid for this shill piece and who is 'footing' the bill. ;o)
And running against a near-corpse had nothing to do with it?
(sorry, Bob, but ya gotta admit- as far as charisma is concerned...)
I get nervous any time Morris agrees with a republican. Morris' main motivator is his hatred for hillary, which I can certainly understand, but I think it affects his judgement.
Bush lost his base on immigration sometime in April (perhaps a bit sooner). Anything under 30% means the base is lost. About two weeks ago Bush was between 24% and 26% on the borders issue. I suspect this was why he decided to come out with the speech tonight.
I think you are exactly right.
And if you don't believe me, check out the Senate Bill sponsored by Hagel and Martinez. Levin is telling us that it would allow up to 200 MILLION NEW US Citizens. And thjat would not do anything about ILLEGAL ALIENS.
Check me off as a new Independent Conservative voter. My days as a republican are over.
Yeah, that '96 election was a total bloody mystery to me. Seemed like the GOP decided it wouldn't run. Very strange!
Making illegal immigrants turn themselves in, get to the back of the line, and jump through a couple dozen hoops to get into good immigrant standing is hardly "amnesty".
I know there are many FReepers who won't be happy unless we round up 12 million people and ship them back to Mexico, but that AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN. EVER.
So learn to compromise and make the illegals go through a difficult process to earn their stay here in America.
Maybe he's a broken clock.
So we welcome in the 10 billion illegals of every stripe. Great. The US will become the France of the Americas....
THAT IS A FREAKISHLY LONG POINTER TOE!!!!!!!!!!
Dick is right on this one. Bush's speech was great and it appealed to a majority of Americans. Not the far left or far right. Just right down the middle. It was the right speech at the right time and time will bare that out.
President Bush cares about polls about as much as Shaquille O'Neal cares about freethrow shooting.
I think Dick's kidding himself in this area. I live in a southern California town with a fifty percent hispanic population. Our local community theatre, run by a bunch of leftist 'artistes', decided it'd be a great idea to 'honor diversity' by booking several shows with the Tijuana Symphony.
The shows were cancelled after the first one played to a near-empty house. The problem? There's an audience, but almost none of it can afford forty dollar seats.
Same thing applies here: most Latinos are poor. Poor people vote for folks who promise to give them things. The latinos he has a chance of wooing are second or third generation folks who have begun to climb the economic ladder. It might be possible to do a few percent better there, but that's about it.
