"About two weeks ago Bush was between 24% and 26% on the borders issue. "I predict that in the next week or so, GWB's job approval rating will approach 5%. His speech tonite was too little, too late and too few on the number of NG soldiers. He blew it. This was "crunch time" and he let us down. I further predict Impeachment attempts in 2007, and with the massive losses that Republicans will suffer in November, we are in TROUBLE!!!!

"If this sounds insane to you call your senators and enlighten them because they are stumbling in the darkness right now and really need your help." Stumbling in the dark my butt.
It's more like they're turning tricks in broad daylight, and hoping that we're blind, or just too stupid to realize what they're doing!

Any republican voter who supports this is either looking out for their own personal self-interest or they want to see the McCain wing of the GOP take over. It truly is political-suicide for the republican party as a whole...atleast as far as maintaining power in both houses. I don't understand how someone can support amnesty while at the same time being critical towards a conservative for threatening to stay home in Nov. Why would they care? Surely they dont think illegals will not be voting in November, especially after coming out of the closet and into the streets for POLITICAL rallies all through April.
Unlike Americans who are known for low turnouts on election day compared to the rest of the world, in Latin American countries (where they can vote) they are BIG on Protesting (as you saw in LA in April) and they are even BIGGER when it comes to turnout to vote.
Political suicide... it's really discouraging after we worked so hard to get to where we are.

What say you now all you Bush kool aid drinkers. Nothing like importing third world poverty! The National Guard plan is just window dressing for the sheeple so that Bush can pass his amnesty bill. A guest worker program by any other name is amnesty. Once here, these third worlders aren't going anywhere. America has only begun to see the tip of the iceberg concerning all the problems associated with this third world invasion. Look into your crystal ball twenty to thirty years down the road, or better yet just look at any central or south American country and you'll get a glimpse of where we are heading. How about Brazil, where the gangs control the country. Instead of big business donating to political campaigns it will be the drug cartels. The cartels will eventually control our law enforcement, politicians, and judges. ANYONE WHO VOTES FOR EITHER PARTY IS PERPETUATING THE PROBLEM! Vote constitution party before it is to late. How can anyone look at their children or grandchildren and vote to allow this travesty continue?

Well, Dick wrote a column the GOP had to go Left to win.
Now he's coming out to favor a Liberal lax approach to our border siding with Harry Reid in approval, whilst claiming he understands the GOP base.
Based on all this, what do you think?

I further predict Impeachment attempts in 2007, and with the massive losses that Republicans will suffer in November, we are in TROUBLE!!!! I agree. I'm actually more concerned about the losses than I am "Impeachment Attempts". I figure, if the President and his party are so stupid politically to allow that to happen than...well... I cant stop that. I certainly dont support it, but that's out of my power. I certainly am not going to sell out my country to save Bush from Impeachment. To me, America comes above any political party. Furthermore, any Impeachment Attempt by the dems on spying on Al qaeda would hurt the dems politically.

Surely there is a lot of internal polling that shows that GW is going at this the right way...
I for one am proud of him ...what a hard damn thankless job...... being the President of a bunch of haters, naysayers, and Monday morning quarterbackers.

Well, I think he is lol. Most Latinos I know are very open to the Republican party. Some of these I suspect were children from parents that got the benefits of 1986 act by Reagan. I have never asked then though since it might come off rude.
The Hispanic vote is a factor. Bush has done well with that vote. I would expect that whatever short term gains the Dems would have would be short lived. Plus this proposed citizenship process that is proposed seems to be quite a long one. I would expect that if they are here met the requirement after that period of time they would be open to ideas from both parties.
The key here also is appearances and empathy with the Hispanic community. Hispanics on a whole are against illegal immigration. The problem is it appears to me that the House bill sort of gives them the finger because its pretty apparent they were not consulted about the solution. That is a major pr problem.
If we deport millions of mostly "brown people" plus a couple million Asians that are here illegally people are going to naturally get uncomfortable. For those that say say hey we are not deporting them just cutting off the jobs (the go back to Mexico or starve policy) I would expect similar reactions.
(1) Many of these illegal aliens have Children born in the USA as well as American spouses and extended family. In a situation where one has been living in the shadows for years and suddenly a illegal father or spouse is tossed out or starved out(as well as his family in the process as to to poverty) whats the chance these will be GOP voters anytime in my lifetime?
(2) Has this issue become or is it being perceived to be anti Hispanic issue? The perception is just as important as the reality. The PR job by the anti illegal immigration forces has been horrible IMHO. The President did much for his party tonight by having a reasonable approach and will calm some nervous Hispanics and Latinos especially the Republican ones.
Its a touchy issue here. No one wants to be called a racist. In fact 99 percent of the posters here I feel bear no conscious ethnic animus toward Hispanics. However, I think its fair to say that unconscious things come out. I do the same things and I am married to a hispanic. Its natural. The biggest fear is that things are changing in the USA. The same tales were told earlier last century about the dirty and gruff Irish and Italians. Many times these folks lived basically in the classic term Ghettos. Many older folks I know of especially Irish and Italian backgrounds grew up that way. So you also have a issue that is class. History is repeating itself in a way but just different faces. \ I know people say that its the fact that their being illegal is the problem not race or ethnic background. However, I think if one took a step back and looked at what people are saying that the objections are more complicated than many wish to believe. For instance there are millions of Asians that have overstayed their visas and are here illegally. I have heard one story on that while everything else is MEXICANS MEXICANS MEXICANS. Why is that? Maybe because the media knows what sells. I think its fair to say that things like that get noticed in the Latino community. In fact I know it does. Things are changing it will no longer be the comfortable Black/white dynamic that we are use too in the USA. To be honest that is now the past and I think the Country is waking up to that. But the country will survive.
In the end, if this border problem can get under control and the flow stopped then there will be no problem. Many illegals today who go through a process that is being proposed will become fine Americans. So yes IMO Morris is right. What the President has proposed tonight will seat well with the Hispanic community. Tough laws and accountability but with mercy. Its a good move and we should run toward it and be part of the process.

There is no internal data to support this, wishing it were so doesn't make it so. The President gave this speech for quite the opposite reason. His base has dropped over this issue.
Insulting conservatives for standing by their own beliefs but praising the President for standing by his belief? Interesting.

Yeah, it's discouraging. I'm emailing my GOP rep and Senator on this issue, both of which are on the endangered list already. Gerlach has won both his races by 51-49, and the DNC will give his opponent a fortune again this year. Santorum is behind in the polls. I like Gerlach, and he's been pretty strong on issues important to me like immigration, taxes, and the war.
Santorum has really irritated me. We supported Pat Toomey two years ago against Arlen Specter, and lost 51-49. We probably would have won, except Santorum and the President came out big for Specter in the closing days of the race. I'm waiting to see where he lands on this immigration thing. He said he does not support amensty, we'll see if his definition of amensty includes a guest-worker program...I suspect it does not. That might be the last straw for me.

I know there are many FReepers who won't be happy unless we round up 12 million people and ship them back to Mexico, but that AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN. EVER.
So ship back the tens of thousands that go through the various gov. systems every month anyway. They are identified and ignored every day.

Dick is wrong. This is the final jump the shark moment for the GOP--they're finished in November. Go and vote, if it makes you feel better, but at this point, you're only choosing which party will sell the country the fastest. Big deal. Stay home.
To: doc
Have you ever been to the border? Have you ever seen the contrast between Mexico and the USA? To say that we are importing third world poverty is delusional. In addition, alot of the third worlders you despise (from places like India, Pakistan, South America, etc.) have made fortunes in this country and created jobs for native born folks.
BTW, the Constitution party is absolutely against the prosecution of the GWOT. No way is this country going to entrust its security to that third party.

What would they have him do, deport millions of people and have the MSM broadcast the sad-faced "exodus" every night for weeks until the sheeple demanded he bring all of them back with three or four of their relatives?
The President's plan is a compromise based on reality, not wishful thinking.

Well I have been observing that race needless to say from afar. I think Senator Santorium unless I have got my news messed up opposes what many call "amnesty" here or a guest worker program. If that is true, I am waiting for that issue to save him as many "Tancredo Conservatives" have promised it will for all Republicans that back the HOuse bill.
