I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.
Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.
Jim
I'm not disappointed either, I expected some [semi]tough talk, we got it. By the time Congress gets through with it, there will be so many loopholes and exemptions not many will be held accountable.
As for getting them on the tax rolls, it works both ways: They pay mininal federal/state taxes but are elligible for the EITC, food stamps, cash payments for children, SSI for qualifying extended family members, child care programs, medical benefits -- these will be the most expensive legal cheap workers in history.
All paid for by your non-smiling American Middle Class.
exactly...nothing new at all. Reminded me of his past SOTU speech where he was throwing our pandering promises left and right.....same thing tonight.
The Bracero program was initiated in 1942 to provide additional manual labor to satisfy demand brought on by World War II. After about 3 million Mexicans entered the USA under this program the program was finally suspended in 1964. After the Braceros returned to their respective homes they continued to cross the border to work on the farms and ranches of this country.
Bingo!
But ignored by this President.
An awful lot of folks ignore the "Learn English" reality. People who are 40+ and manual laborers all their lives don't learn a new language very well. If the exam is difficult, and ALL US citizenship exams are difficult, these folks are not ever going to be citizens and and be legally entitled to vote.
During 13 years in the Navy I knew many, many Filipino nationals that served honorably and wanted to be Americans. They were limited to non-sensitive ratings such as Yeomen, Personnelmen, Mess Specialists and such due to not being citizens, but on the whole were very dedicated and hard workers.
And the illegals don't stand around and participate in exit polls.
HHK
Why do you think this will save the GOP (I'm conservative and not a member of the GOP by the way)?
Seems to me most illegals will vote Democrat anyway.
Abe Lincoln freed the African American slaves, I don't see them voting in droves for the GOP so why will the Hispanic population?
Just asking, not trying to start a flame war.

Foreign competition depresses wages even more.
I think that for most people who hire illegals, if it's not illegals, it's offshore manufacturing. In the case of the householders hiring illegals, if it's not illegals, it's nobody - they would have to do the jobs themselves since an American workforce is too expensive.
That's why Bush proposes the guest worker program, and why Bush isn't throwing everyone out. It would be horribly disruptive to existing relationships here if illegals were thrown out wholesale.

He also said they had to GET TO THE BACK OF THE LINE from those who are legal immigrants, learn English, etc. -- but "I guess you missed those parts"
I see, they get to go to the back of the line while still staying in our country and working. They don't wait out of the country like all of the other foreigners trying to immigrate to our country legally do. They sit here RIGHT IN OUR COUNTRY. That's amnesty, no matter how you slice it, buy you'll refuse to see that as you have your blinders on mighty tight. No thinking necessary on your part, just be a good little Bushbot.
I am going to start a Border Patroll list and maybe make it its own thread.
They dont go to the back of the line...they are already here...
Dont you get that?
When are you tinfoilers going to get a new schtick.
It wouldn't surprise me if Bush did call Fox. He does seem to be Vincente's "kid."
Did it occur to you that if the REPUBLICAN party allowed them the Guest worker programs, they MIGHT just vote Republican. Are you forgetting that many of them are Conservative Catholics? Or that 57% of Latinos voted GOP in 2004?
It was a lot to cover in 16 minutes, and ultimately it's up to Congress to write the bill. He said what he wanted out of it, but it isn't going to be a two-page bill. Obviously there will be lots of contentious details.
Legislating is messy work.
The numbers say it all:
2000 (Clinton's last year) Over 10,000 fines imposed on businesses for violating immigration law.
2005 Only 3 fines imposed on businesses for violating immigration law.
I have supported W on so much, but on illegal immigration he is actually doing an exponentially WORSE job than Billy Bentwilly did. That really pi$$e$ me off.
Before that, I was listening to Brit and his FOX all-stars. I am about as sick of the lame FOX all-stars as everything else on FOX.
Sad but very true. You can also place Bush's pic there because Dems will try to impeach him for wiretapping after they win the both houses in the Nov.
