"...if you use margarine it's virtually guilt-free!"

The argument for eating margarine and other products containing hydrogenated oils are their lack of cholesterol. Margarine is also less expensive than butter.

However, margarine contains refined, artificially saturated vegetable oil. It also contains harmful trans-fatty acids, and often residues of the toxic metals nickel and cadmium. Butter is a natural food and a good source of important fat-soluble vitamins.

You will pay more for butter, but nutritionally it is well worth it.

Obviously I got this from a Googled site, but still, I would not touch margarine, and I actually have not in probably 30 years now.

Sad to say that the Math Teacher within me has finally made me give up potato chips. I had to do it before the 25-cent bag of chips disappeared for good. And it's already starting to happen.

Here's my story. You may want to scroll downward now.
Still there. Okay, then.

In the not-so-distant past, about 6 years ago or so, potato chip bags were very proportional, whichever of the major brands you bought. A 25-cent bag has 1 ounce, 50-cent got you 2, a buck 4, a buck-fifty 6. The best deal was when the supermarkets put the big bags on sale for $.79 or $.99.

Then they started shrinking the bags by half an ounce from each size EXCEPT the quarter bag. There's a reason for this. People won't buy bags with less than an ounce in them. It probably costs them too much to make them as well. They've tried this before back in 1980, when I was in high school, back when bags were 10 and 25 cents. They raised the dime bag to 15 and finally 20, which was silly, so they discontinued it. Well, folks, at 7/8 of an ounce, the 25 cent bag is at the size of the old dime bag that finally went away. So this one is going soon, too.

Where does the math come in? For the last four years, I've told every student that I saw with a .50-cent bag that he was wasting money. Not by buying junk food, but by buying the WRONG SIZE junk food. Two small bags was a better bargain than one bigger bag.

But that's all okay. I'm waiting for the big bags to make it down to 4 ounces. More than that and I really pay for it the next day.

See. Told you that you should have scrolled down.
And don't get me started on how I paid 50 cents for a slice of pizza in high school, and 50 cents for a subway token and how NOW I'm paying two bucks for a slice of pizza and two bucks for a subway ride (no more tokens). There's some sort of weird symbiotic relationship between subway rides and pizza prices I tell you . . . . . . . .
