THE iconic US actress Bo Derek has been appointed as special envoy of the Secretary of State for Wildlife Trafficking Issues.
Derek, best-known for her role in the 1979 feature film "10", appeared at a ceremony at the US State Department and said she was honoured to accept such a "daunting" role and to do her part to help save the environment.
"I know my participation in this is going to be small compared to people actively working in the field, but I might be able to help with public awareness," said Ms Derek, dressed in a black pant suit and white shirt.
She said she will be working with a coalition that is trying stop the illegal trafficking of wildlife, a soaring market worth $US10 billion a year.
"The Coalition Against Wildlife Trafficking (CAWT) will help educate people around the world that their quality of life is diminished, not improved, by purchasing endangered and threatened wildlife products," the 49-year-old actress, a staunch Republican, said.
CAWT is a global coalition the US government is seeking to build to focus public and political attention on the problem of wildlife trafficking.
Among the organizations that have joined this coalition are WildAid, Save the Tiger Fund and the Smithsonian Institution.
a-hem!
there are rules, you know.
Personally, I think she should be made ambassador to Saudi Arabia....
What happened to her missing boyfriend?
Yeah, I know...but I didn't have one...sorry!
I believe you are thinking of Olivia Newton John. Her boyfriend disappeared a while ago but I never heard what happened.
She's been honorary chair of VAs National Rehabilitation Special Events for five years running.
You're right -- oops!
Ride 'em cowgirl!
I reckon "Senator Derek" has a nice ring to it...
This sentence speaks volumes of her class. Humility is not often seen these days.
OK...who was the special envoy?
< ]B^)
Last words:"Is someone's popcorn done?" (Beep! Beep! Beep!)
She was such a terrible TERRIBLE actress that I wouldn't support her nomination for anything -- anyone with average intelligence and money for training, even if they have no particular thespian talent, can learn to act well enough to not be embarrassing, if the script doesn't require anything out of the ordinary.
Bo Derek doesn't even come close, she is an excruciatingly bad actress, in movies where her character was never given anything difficult to do; therefore her intelligence must be subnormal, or else she has never watched one of her own movies.
If we measure watchability as "looks+acting ability", she gets a 10, but most of the actresses in Hollywood get at least 15. (I can think of a few 18's, but can't think of any 19's or 20's at the moment.)
She's a Republican!!!
How many of your Hollywood '15s' can claim that?
Granted, that it was.
The way she stood by her marriage to a much older man until the end of his life, has always impressed me that she is made of stout moral fiber.
