Maine: Governor signs smoking, cell record, profiteering bills

AUGUSTA, Maine --Private clubs will have new procedures to follow when they vote on whether to allow smoking.

Gov. John Baldacci on Thursday signed into law a bill that will allow club smoking policy to be decided by a majority of club members who return ballots, rather than a majority of all of a club's members.

The new law will correct what critics saw as a flaw in the current procedure, in which smoking policy is decided by a majority of each club's members. Critics said that poses problems because many club members are inactive or can't be located when voted are held.

The Legislature killed a separate bill that would have banned smoking in private clubs that have paid employees

So, we have a governor and state legislature dictating operative bylaws of private clubs, but only as regards smoking.

Must not have any real problems that need attention.

Ok heres the scoop...our local Vets club (which has always allowed smoking...but was forced by the STATE to have a vote)recently voted via mailed ballot...82 to continue to allow smoking...43 against...BUT!!!!!..the 76 members that did not return ballots were counted as AGAINST....Hence! NO SMOKING!...I wish the state had used that logic for the gov Race...everyone that didn't vote...voted against Baldacci!!

HOW ROTTEN can he get?!  So............this means that smoking will NOT be allowed in our clubs????  Are you kidding me?????  Just when I didn't think I could hate him anymore......................

How about Federal legislation saying that smokers will not be covered by any Federal medical insurance, such as Medicare, Medicaid, if they get a disease associated with tobacco use.

How about you start bitching about paying for the 1,200 and more Somali's in Maine that are on welfare and that we have to pay for HEALTHCARE????

And what with Maine cigarette taxes, I think smokers pay MORE then their fair share, don't you???

BALDACCI AND ALLEN SEEK FEDERAL ASSISTANCE TO ADDRESS INFLUX OF SOMALI IMMIGRANTS

June 6, 2002

Representatives Baldacci and Allen called for $100,000 in funding to enable Catholic Charities of Maine to provide needed services to Somali immigrants in Lewiston and other communities. Catholic Charities provides outreach and assistance to refugees and immigrants.

Maine has a hard time finding work and feeding their own. Yet Baldacci and Allen want an INFLUX of immigrants! What's up with this!

I can't imagine why anyone would want to live in Maine. State income taxes, state sales taxes, liberal lunatics in office, unfriendly to business, and lousy weather. A lot like Massachusetts, where they keep sending Hanoi Kerry and Chappy Kennedy back to the Senate, for decades now, except Maine sends the same two leftist Republicans, Collins and Snowe. New England in general is a good place to avoid.

Well........hubby was military.  We got orders to Loring Air Force Base in 1983.  We loved it up here.  Bought a home in December 1984.  Raised our daughter here.  Settle in.

Hubby died in Jan 2003.  So,  since I am now alone and have many friends up here, I have no intention of leaving.

I haven't posted in what is probably years. Yet when I read your posts in this thread I see that you are EXACTLY the type of person that this state DESPERATELY needs.

I am not a "Native" (Born in Newport, RI... a Navy brat), and brought up in NH thinking that all Mainers were "Maniacs". When I left the Navy in '73 I came to work at the State's only nuclear power plant. Maine Yankee is now just a "memory". What a travesty!

So keep on keep'in on and Godspeed!

Noooooooooooooooo they counted 76 absentee votes as NO!!!!  So that far at weighs the actual YES votes.

No, no, She, if I read correctly, that's been overturned-this new law allows them to vote over, and they'll only be allowed to use retuned ballots. So it looks like you'll get to dine out again, once the vote's retaken.

This lousy little weasel pr**k and his ilk just can't stay away from any thread that has anything to do with tobacco. Why would you want to continue to go where you're not wanted, and continue to insult and deride people who are trying to comment? Just because you're a rabid smoker-hater? I don't get it. But then I'm not a psychiatrist.
