Condoleezza and the Watermelon (College math exam uses Rice with racial stereotype)
Email from Dr. Wayne Perryman ^ | 4/11/06 | Dr. Wayne Perryman

From: Rev. Wayne Perryman DoubleBro@aol.com

Dear Friends

The following sample math problem was given to students as part of their final exam at Bellevue Community College in Washington State. I was asked by black students to represent them in this matter. Some of these students attend my church.

I am asking all of you and your friends to e-mail the school at the following e-mail addresses and express your outrage:

Advising@bcc.ctc.edu, tpritcha@bcc.ctc.edu, and amatsumo@bcc.ctc.edu.

The following is the math problem given to the students.

The Problem: Condoleezza holds a watermelon just over the edge of the roof of the 300 -foot Federal Building, and tosses it up with a velocity of 20 feet per second. The height of the watermelon above the ground t seconds later is given by formula h= -16t2 + 20t + 300

a. How many seconds will it pass her (she's standing at a height of 300 feet) on the way down?

b. When will the watermelon hit ground?

If they used this same problems and substituted Condoleezza's name with Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton, there would be mass protest and they would shut the college down. Because it was Condoleezza Rice, they wanted to ignore it until I showed up today.

Please e-mail the college and express your outrage and your support of having me at the table to resolve this issue. I am demanding that the college to do several things to correct the problem.

This is serious. Please do not let me down, I want thousands of e-mails to come from all across the country. A CBS affiliate, KIRO TV did cover this story.

"Dr. Rice would probably overlook it as you say but this also affects all the black students at the college especially those who had to answer this question!

Just substitute the name 'Martin Luther King' and I think you'll get my drift!"

What is the worst implication that you can draw from this? - That black people like watermelon more than white people? That is not a in implication I would want to extend effort to see censored because it indicates belief in a stereotype but not prejudicial action based on the stereotype. I generally don't support punishment for beliefs but only actions.

For example, I had an economics professor who said anybody who believed in Reaganomics was ignorant. He and I argued through three quarters about all kinds of things. But he graded my papers fairly, gave me the "A" I deserved and recommended me for a fellowship. He has stereotypical beliefs but I have no problem with him being a professor.

Now, probably, the person that made this question up is a racist. Probably he is anti-conservative. If there is a pattern of prejudice by him then that is a different situation but based simply on this test question I don't see a basis for action. The most I would do is look and see if there have been other incidents involving him. YMMV.

I just called the college math department and president's office and I was told by both people who answered that their phones are ringing off the hook. Thank God for the new media because the liberal TV affiliates in Seattle would never touch this.

Did he mean, "It will pass her in how many seconds"? Anyway, the watermelon will pass her in exactly the same amount of time it took this stupid teacher to come up with that question.

b. When will the watermelon hit ground?

On Tuesday.

Next question

No problem, I'm on your side, and I agree with you, that's probably what they would say.

Stupid question. It does not even take into account aerodynamic drag on the watermelon.

Does anybody seriously think Condoleeza Rice could throw a watermelon 20 feet in the air?

And for obvious reasons-gets kind of hot in the summer down there and a cold slice of watermelon is just the right item to have on the picnic menu!

You said picnic! What are you, some kind of racist? .

.

.

.

.

(A little background... A few years back the race hustlers were maintaining that picnic was a racist term, because to whites it meant a party where they would go "Pick a N _ _ _ _ _" to lynch. I kid you not.)

If you mean that this issue is not worth the effort to persue then I think you and I are alone in that opinion.

Did those you spoke to say anything about the use of 'Condoleezza' in math question?

I prefer....

Ahmed holds a freshly cut human head just over the edge of the roof of a 300-foot minaret, and tosses it up with a velocity of 20 feet per second. The height of the head above the ground t seconds later is given by formula h= -16t2 + 20t + 300

(Please use arabic numbers only in your solution)

Well, it's obvious that the watermelon should be dropped.

It is dangerous to be heaving a heavy watermelon up into the air near the edge of a roof. She could lose her balance!

More proof that for liberals, racism is OK -- as long as it's against a black who is conservative.

a. How many seconds will it pass her (she's standing at a height of 300 feet) on the way down? b. When will the watermelon hit ground?

First of all, the parenthetical exposition goes with question b not question a. To put it with part a is outright misleading.

Second of all, the author is a $#%^# racist.

Thank you.

Maybe. But it's very dangerous to even try. You know that watermelon could come down on your head and bust wide open. Then all of the tasty fruit would be covered with dirt. That's unacceptable, obviously.
