April 11, 2006--In a political season when most of the news has been bad for Republicans, the Congressional debate over immigration has produced a bit of movement in favor of the GOP.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national opinion survey found that 37% of Americans now trust Republicans more than Democrats on the issue of immigration. Just 31% trust the Democrats more.
In late March, the two parties were perceived equally on the topic, with 38% favoring the GOP and 37% preferring the Democrats.
Americans remain divided on the issue itself. Just 41% favor letting immigrants move towards citizenship by paying a fine, paying back taxes, and learning to speak English. Forty-two percent (42%) are opposed.
Forty-two percent (42%) believe a barrier along the Mexican border would significantly reduce immigration while 39% disagree.
Still, 57% believe a barrier should be built. Just 31% disagree.
A separate survey found that, in a hypothetical race for Congress, a plurality of Americans would vote for the candidate who favors more enforcement on the immigration issue.

Any study of GOP leadership on the issue of immigration should divide the House, Senate, and White House. The Republican House is showing strong leadership on this issue, and would have far hither "trust" numbers than would the Senate...and "you know who" on this issue.

The represent the interests of people who benefit from cheap labor and want to glut the American labor market to tilt the balance of power between labor and capital massively in favor of capital. They represent the interests of people who want a borderless world governed by a corporate plutocracy.

unfortunately, Bush himself as well as other perceived GOP leaders (McCain) being for the senate bill, is thwarting a unified message getting out against the Dems on this issue.
A far thinking capitalist would remember Rome. The capital gain from short labor is short term if the capitalists become an endangered minority.
Patriotically speaking, and thinking of their own posterity, they are short-sighted... out to lunch. And, I say this as someone who has benefited through the capital markets.
What I don't do is figure "Hmmm, the GOP aren't doing what I want--I KNOW! I'll put Dean and Hilary in charge of immigration! I'm sure they'll put tough-on-illegal-immigration judges on the bench!"

Actually, we live in a world in which rich people can physically remove themselves from contact with the lower orders. Have you seen the ads for a permanently out to sea luxurious cruise ship where rich people never have to touch land ? What an incredible metaphor that is for our age ! Rich people can just divorce themselves from all accountability and the consequences of their actions.

The republicans have a chance to clean house this election and in 2008 if they just do the right thing. Close the borders, and take the steps necessary to get the 12 to 25 million illegals out of the country (i.e., employer sanctions, cut off public services, enable local law enforcement to aid INS, etc.). The majority of hispanics that are here support getting tough on illegals.

Voting for either party sounds illogical to anyone concerned about the sovereignty of the country.
They are here, like it or not we are stuck with them. The best we can do is build a wall and stop any more from coming illegally and if we need more "workers" make them go though a checkpoint a give information.

I just think voting 3rd party is futile because if you can't force change within the Republican Party by voting in more Conservative candidates starting some "new party" is already doomed to fail because you have already proven that you don't have the votes.
But I don't want to reward the Repubs for signing away the sovereignty of my country. I am much more loyal to my country than I am to any ploitical party....I know, I'm working on it.

Stop rationalizing: If the Republicans win, you'll say it's because the Republican voters got out the vote; if the Democrats win, it will be because the Republican voters didn't vote. Take responsibility for the consequences of your actions.
If you want to toss out the party that CUT the flow of foreign-born immigration from its high in 2000, gave us Roberts and Alito and MANY conservative judges, cut taxes and is leading the WOT, at least have the cojones to admit YOU made that choice. The "Oh, it's not MY fault I voted or chose not to vote the way I did!" pose isn't suitable for the party that supposedly values personal responsibility.

Don't you think in many ways that is exactly what the framers had in mind? They deeply distrusted government, but knew it was a necessary evil.
