April 11, 2006--In a political season when most of the news has been bad for Republicans, the Congressional debate over immigration has produced a bit of movement in favor of the GOP.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national opinion survey found that 37% of Americans now trust Republicans more than Democrats on the issue of immigration. Just 31% trust the Democrats more.
In late March, the two parties were perceived equally on the topic, with 38% favoring the GOP and 37% preferring the Democrats.
Americans remain divided on the issue itself. Just 41% favor letting immigrants move towards citizenship by paying a fine, paying back taxes, and learning to speak English. Forty-two percent (42%) are opposed.
Forty-two percent (42%) believe a barrier along the Mexican border would significantly reduce immigration while 39% disagree.
Still, 57% believe a barrier should be built. Just 31% disagree.
A separate survey found that, in a hypothetical race for Congress, a plurality of Americans would vote for the candidate who favors more enforcement on the immigration issue.

Get Tancredo out in front, and that GOP # will double.
Exactly right!
Stupid. Who do you trust more?
Who do you trust more Iran or Syria?
How about... I don't trust either on this issue?
Ted Kennedys speech cheering on the illegals needs to be all over the TV.
Where is he? He should be doing the talk show circuit.
Good point.
You will not see these numbers in the MSM. Instead you will find some bogus poll that supports the illegals.
It was interesting to watch Teddy giving his speech, while a woman at his side translated it into Spanish.
All we have to do is not give in to the Buchananoids and support the GOP--BUT (big, Hillary-sized but) we have to pressure the GOP to do the right thing on immigration.
A tough task, but just imagine how much tougher it will be if the Dems get in in November.
I knew that ap-ipsos poll was a lie. you can tell there's a groundswell against amnesty. repubs better get on the right side of this issue.
Yep. Showing far left liberals out there enraging the illegals tells the American people this is nothing but a far left wing attempt to take over America. Having them show up during a foreign invasion and supporting the invaders was a God send for us.
No, Jeff Sessions should be out front.
Where is he? The opportunity was there for him to be vocal in the media. Maybe he's planning for the future.
Rass should have asked why, but let me fill in the blanks.
From these results that highly still favor a wall...and the fact Mccain/kennedy/Hagel/Specter/Martinez is no different then the Dem's plan?
I think it's fair to assume the ONLY difference between the two parties is that the House passed an enforcement only bill.
Perhaps McCain, Hagel, Specter and Martinez ought to get onboard with Sessions, Hayworth etc..
NOt to worry, the MSM will have a poll out tomorrow noting the completely different number.
You don't need Tancredo anywhere. This isn't a national election year with national candidates. It's going to be the positions the individual candidates take in House/Senate elections this year that matters. If a particular GOP candidate wants to run on this issue, he's certainly free to do so.
And this was taken April 1&2 BEFORE THESE PIMPLY FACED MORONS STARTED RUBBING MEXICAN FLAGS IN OUR FACES. What will the numbers be the next time Ras does this poll?
That will nail it down.
The numbers show that people are way too trusting. I trust very few politicians and neither party.
i screwed up the date in the article. it was published today, not 4/1. the poll was taken apr 8-9. this was still before yesterday's insanity though so i would imagine the number is even higher now.
