NEWARK, N.J. -- The men both stood in a busy hardware store parking lot, but their lives were far apart.
On one end, Oscar Bautista of El Salvador said he had been waiting more than three hours for a job. Across the lot, Art Jackson loaded potting soil into his Dodge Durango. He complained that immigrants are making it harder for Americans to keep good jobs, especially blacks.
''You need to take care of home first,'' said Jackson, an African-American phone salesman from northern New Jersey.
Blacks and Latinos are often united on social and political issues. But they often differ when it comes to immigration.
Newcomers make black progress harder, said Wesley Crawford, who works at Source of Knowledge, a bookstore in Newark. ''It's a misconception that they're taking jobs we don't want. If you give people a good job, they will work.''
While Hispanic immigrants have protested a proposed crackdown on illegal immigration, the nation's most prominent black leaders have all been to New Orleans to try to stop the upcoming local election. Shortly after the storm, Jesse Jackson and others complained that Latino workers seemed to have more access than blacks to rebuilding jobs.
Bruce S. Gordon, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said that African-American and Latino bonds are strong and that his ''spirit was there'' at the immigration marches.
Most of the immigration protests have focused on a bill passed by the U.S. House that would make illegal immigration a felony, and all but one black voting member of Congress, Rep. Harold Ford Jr. of Tennessee, was against it, according to the Congressional Black Caucus.
Still, many blacks feel threatened, said Earl Ofari Hutchinson, a black writer in Los Angeles.
''The civil rights leaders say we're all united, but the average person on the street is taking great offense at this group coming in and essentially taking over,'' he said.
"Latino" or "Hispanic" is a little too broad brush.
Cubans tend toward conservative and Republican (anti-Castro) and do not generally get along too well with the other groups.
Puerto Ricans tend to look down on Mexicans and other Latin Americans, so may be expected to oppose illegals from those areas.
All the Mexican natives I know do not believe there should be any border control at all. (BTW, most of these are US citizens or married to US citizens and none are illegals AFAIK.)
I have not discussed the topic with the only Ecuadorean I know, but he is very liberal overall.
In New Orleans I think it was a matter of Illegals being willing to work period. NO locals seemed to prefer to remain victims instead of taking advantage of the opportunities at hand.

Blacks resent any group that comes to America and does well. This is especially true for groups that aren't white since it demonstrates that their own lack of success has nothing to do with race. Too bad black culture is stuck on stupid.
Similiar to the outrage they have when homosexual activists claim their movement toward gay marriage is comparable to civil rights. That's certainly part of the problem.
Few other problems as well.
High unemployment in the black community. Telling them people outside the U.S. wil get jobs before their own doesn't sit well. Injures pride.
The same reaction any American has, that they are illegal and disrespecting our soveriegnty.
However, the biggest problem? Hispanics have surpassed the black community as the largest minority. Hispanics are not alike the black community. They voted over 40% for Bush. Black Americans voted for Bush 11%?
This means Hispanics are a more competitive demo for politicians, have greater number of votes up for grabs, and have a higher birthrate. Democrats are wiling to show them deference because of it. All the perks they used to give blacks are in danger of being given to Hispanics, and better than what was given to the black community.
This is why I've constantly told people that think the Dem monopoly on black voters can never fall, that they are wrong. better outreach by Republicans to that community, high profile applcants like Blackwell & Steele to high office, and competition from another minority group that isn't monolithic with their votes will force one of two options. 1) The loss of all their power as a voting block and the perks that comes with it. 2) A large minority vote of the black population going to Republicans. Just enough to scare the Dems into not taking them for granted.
Think of it in terms of the "free market" and it all makes sense. Either the market drives them out of power because they don't remain competitive in terms of their voting patterns OR they match their competitors and start voting Rep.
Women, white people to an extent, Hispanics, catholics..etc...all competitive blocks when pols come pandering at election time. The black community hurts itself by giving loyalty to a party that doesn't service them equally in turn.
Just look at what happened to the unions by being so solidly in the tank for Democrats.

Indeed, and this is a perfect example of the ignorance of both parties who think that by cracking down on illegal immigration, they will lose the latino/hispanic (let's just say "Mexican" since that's what we mean) vote. I know plenty of legal Mexican-Americans --some who have been in this country for generations who are feeling the "illegal immigrant" backlash and certainly don't appreciate being lumped together with illegal border crossers. They are affected by the devaluation of their wages the same as everybody else.

1) Are so grateful to get out of the hellhole thirdworld countries they come from where there is no chance to advance that they work like hell when they get here, and are willing to stay up all night running convenience stores while they go to school in the day....
2) Don't have a victim mentality, here in the greatest country in the world, and...
3) Are under no illustion that the world owes them a job.
There is a reason that these "new minorities" excell...they want to, and they haven't been taught that growing, maturing, and becoming rich makes them "less" of whatever they are.
The average black person is about as smart and strong as the average white, pink, yellow, orange, green or purple person. But our "home grown" minorities have been taught that what happened a hundred and fifty years ago means that they either can't possible perform, or shouldn't have to.
Last summer, Glenn Beck cited a problem in Philladelphia, where some black kids were beaten in what the presstitutes wouldn't call a hate crime, but what was left to your imagination to be one. The Philly media bemoaned this beating, and begged for information on the perps (whom you had to assume were white, as the story was presented, but it was never said.) Turns out, it was "African-American" black local teens and a dad, beating up "Nigerian immigrant" black teens, because said kids were outpeforming them in school.
This says everything that anyone needs to know about today's "black community" in the inner city. (And nothing about the blacks smart enough to get out, because they get it.) In the inner-city, race-baited, Jessie Jackson culture, if someone black is smarter than you, or tries harder than you, they are both "dissing" you by showing off, and "not really black" anyway. What is with this? Is there any other group on the planet that we would say, "Hey, it's OK, you can't POSSIBLY achieve anything on your own, even if other people just like you go on to be rich. You'd better settle in and let us give you a pittance of money just to keep you unproductive and addicted to a hand out. And by the way, re-elect democrats who suck up to you at election time, and ignore you the other 364 days of the year."
Let me say what the press is afraid to say...If your "culture" is that people rarely marry, that daddy's probably gone, that grandma is the male role model, that you'll blame the cops for catching your kid stealing or doing drugs, that it is "too white" to hold a regular job that requires you to show up every day, that you don't think it's fair that other people who work hard and sacrifice should have better jobs than you, that "rap music" played way too loud is cool in any way, and that you would rather "be true to your people" than convict a murdering, smarmy, spoiled former football player, then your "culture" is bankrupt. Martin Luthor King, Jr., Harriet Tubbman, George Washington Carver, the guy who invented air conditioning, the guy who invented the way to make serum blood into plasma for storage, and every other black Icon that gets trotted out for black history month ever year would be ashamed that they died trying to advance black culture into something that would impress the rest of the world, only to have hip-hoppy, whiney professional victims squander that greatness in drugs and un-wed sex.
Whew. Gotta go take my meds.
2. There is a reason why employers would rather hire an illegal who shows up for work rather than UNDERCLASS blacks. It has nothing to do with wages. Go down to where my parents live in South Florida. You will see Guatemalans and Haitians (who happend to be "black") lining up for UNSKILLED construction jobs that pay $15 an hour. Less than a mile away, the disciples of Jesse and Sharpton sit on their a-ses in front of the Dixie Manor PJs drinking at 9AM.
