"One dead after explosion at Toronto Tim Hortons"
Updated Sun. Apr. 2 2006 5:39 PM ET
CTV.ca News Staff
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Early news reports said a man was seen going into the washroom with explosives strapped to his chest. Police would not confirm the reports.
Employees and witnesses were questioned by police about what they had seen."
ARTICLE SNIPPET #2: "The police bomb squad worked at the scene for much of the afternoon. They used a remote controlled bomb disposal robot to investigate an object found nearby.
Yonge Street was shut down in both directions between Yorkville and Bloor, reportedly tying up traffic around one of the city's busiest intersections.
There is no word yet on what caused the blast. Once police declare the scene to be safe the fire marshal's office will begin an investigation.
Later Sunday, another Tim Hortons outlet in Toronto was locked down after a suspicious package was found inside the restaurant, just a few subway stations north of where the explosion occurred.
Few details were immediately available, but police confirmed an emergency task force unit had been dispatched to the second location and the area had been evacuated.

Actually, "homicide bomber" is the NON politically-correct term. Some media began using it after receiving complaints that "suicide bomber" inferred the person was suicidal, when in actuality he was a cold-blooded murderer. The term "suicide bomber" doesn't take into account the other victims of the nutcase.
What is CORRECT (in the PC sense) about changing 'suicide' to 'homicide' in the phrase?
As I see it, the only reason to make the change is to clarify that the purpose of these bombers is to murder others......not just kill themselves. One can argue about its value, but calling it "PC".....left or right.........is just plain not accurate.
And definitely not worth getting upset about. (Don't you have more important things - like say, abortion, socialism, or leftist lying to name a few - to worry about without getting worked up about a word change by Fox News?)
"I doubt that this guy was interested in taking out a donut shop."
You never know. The purpose is terror, not necessarily a big body count. People can stay away from (and the police can screen) most large events. But what happens when you're afraid to stop for coffee or go grocery shopping.
The message of terrorism is "there is *no* security."
Jehovah's Witnesses. There ya go. That's what our Univ of Oklahoma suicide bomber's mother and sister are. Rest of the family was Lutheran except Joel Hinrichs III himself.
too funny! in a sick way.
Ilive about 35 miles 0n the NE side of Houston,Texas, some sort of explosion about ten minutes ago at4;40
Yall need to hurry up and decide what to call him. His family will be wanting to bury him soon.
Huck and Drew were correct, and there's no call to be namecalling about it.
"Suicide bomber" is an accurate term in that it describes a bomber that blows himself up in the process. An bomber that leaves a bomb somewhere to kill others but not himself is *also* committing homicide. Calling the former a "homocide bomber" and not the latter, is inaccurate.
The term "suicide bomber" refers to the sort of plan the perpetrator had, and is a more useful description of what happened.
LOL, I need to work on my political correctness!
To all of our FReeper FRiends in Canada I say I hope this is just an isolated incident and not part of some plot. Keep your heads down guys and try to avoid crowds.
These bombers aren't interested in only taking their own life, they wish to take others, thus the term "homicide bomber" is more apt.
I do not know but it felt like a large explosion. Could have been an acetylene bomb some kid set off in the next neighborhood though. We not only herd it we felt it.
I don't get too worked up about stuff like this. I try to keep my irritation confined to things of consequence.
Sumicide Bomber? :)
I don't know about any events going on, but the subway in a large city could be plenty crowded on a Sunday anyway. IMO, the reason he was in the restroom was to be somewhere where he could make final "adjustments" without being seen. He wouldn't have been able to do that in the subway station or aboard a train.
I'm on the NW side of town--in Cypress, and have heard nothing. Lots of plane activity, however...
I'm going with 'sumicide' Dane. Then no one gets upset. :)
