Religious self-flagellation is an old tradition and is still alive and well in a number of religious sects. It enjoyed much popularity in Christianity in medieval times and is still practiced today in a few places, notably the Phillipines. It is not any more a mental disorder than any other ridiculous religious practice (handling snakes, feeding statues, etc).
