It was 1971 for me and they were still marching and protesting.

I could hardly get to my favorite cafe on St. Michele.

ROFLOL!! Oh, PAUL.........get some therapy, boy. :)

Is it the superior French health care that allowed thousands of old people to die in their homes during the heat wave?

And that booming economy........that's to be envied by us, too?

What were those unemployment figgers again??

Thanks for finding that, texian. LOVE it!

Here is the bottom line to this.

France had a rule that said employees could not work over 35 hours a week. This of course led to higher unemployment and companies leaving. In order to stay competitive France lifted the not over 35hours a week rule.

So having to actually work over 35 hours a week is what brings this riot on. These French weenies are acting as if they cannot quit their job if they do not like their hours. How pathetic from the oh soooo "sophisticated" Europeans... LMAO!

Thanks, Sarah. I was pretty sure that you would have some interesting input. I have spent some time in France, even lived there for a year, and I retain my interest in what goes on.

Notre Dame is DEFINITELY worth the trip. Hopefully, it's still standing by the time you get there......

From krugman's own words:

"It's true that France's G.D.P. per person is well below that of the United States. But that's because French workers spend more time with their families."

I guess a French family spends time rioting together?

and surreal when you realize what it's all about.

We had labor violence here in America when the Communists and socialists incited it. We enjoy pretty good labor protection laws, such as age, gender, veteran status, religion, handicap, etc. Granted that neither group in france has given much detail about the legislation. On the face of it, I would think this is to spur hiring. Since the "yoots" were claiming economic disadvantage. This looks like round two of the economic riots.

I was at Michigan State in the early 70s; it was simply more fun to demonstrate that to go to class. Believe me, I remember it well.

EGGZACTLY! LOL! They spend so much time together vacationing on the Riviera that they let their poor old parents die in the heat wave.....

What's the future for a society when you lose both the lower classes (side-lined, unemployed, Muslim males in the suburbs) and the upper classes (future side-lined, privileged university students)? Who's left in a high tax, highly regulated, welfare state?

Oh, man. PIRATES

MSNBC is reporting the US Navy is firing on Pirate ships off the coast of Ethiopia.

These people will do anything to have alternate programming to the NCAA tournament. LOL.

I'll bet that 90% of these students are there for a lark.

There are 'Union workers' involved too. And I would guess a lot of communists......

My husband attended a 'free speech rally' at UC in the early '70's, and got up there in support of our troops in Viet Nam, and got booed off the stage.

Yep. The left really believes in free speech....
