March 17, 2006: Documents confirm Saddam Hussein government knew Zarqawi headed Al Qaeda cell in Iraq in August 2002

Documents released Thursday by the US government show that less than a year after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, Saddam Hussein’s government had identified at least one active Al Qaeda cell in his country.

Among the Iraqi documents collected by U.S. intelligence during the Iraq war amd released Thursday is a document, released only in Arabic, which the US government describes as follows:

2002 Iraqi Intelligence Correspondence concerning the presence of al-Qaida Members in Iraq. Correspondence between IRS members on a suspicion, later confirmed, of the presence of an Al-Qaeda terrorist group. Moreover, it includes photos and names.

A translation of the document shows that the Al Qaeda terrorist that Saddam Hussein’s government had identified was none other than Abu Mus’ab al Zarqawi, who emerged as one of the leading terrorists in post-Saddam Hussein Iraq.

The document, dated August 17, 2002, identifies the Al Qaeda member as Ahmed Fadil Nizal Al Khalaylah, the real name of Zarqawi, and includes a series of photos of Zarqawi. (See link at http://fmso.leavenworth.army.mil/documents-docex/Iraq/ISGZ-2004-019920.pdf)

A memo within the document shows that as early August 8, 2002, Zarqawi was identified as a member of “Tanzeem al Qaeda”, or the “Al Qaeda Organization”.

This document provides startling documentation that at the very least that Saddam Hussein’s government knew that Al Qaeda was active and functioning in Iraq.

Although the document goes on to outline activities of the group, there is no indication that the Iraqi government took any steps to stop Al Qaeda from operating within Iraq, in clear defiance of international law.

"Do you think as documents get translated, they should get their own thread? There are going to be thousands. "

Michelle Malkin has some links:

As to what to do with those millions of docs once they are translated? DamifIknow! You'd almost need a separate site with a database-like structure, so search & retrieval would be easy.

FR really can use a database.

This isn't just nasty gossip that will be coming in. This is major stuff.

I'm going to take a look at Michele's link.

I wonder if Jim can give someone Admin powers to help organize these threads?

I agree with you. GW needs to move forward. History will vindicate him. (His library will need to be alot bigger to hold 45,000 boxes of materials on Sadam's weapons.)

I've got a blog site I rarely use, we could set up a free blog site with the docs to start off with? But yes, we'd have to have some type of DB to cross ref them.

I have someone I can talk to about that on Mon A.M. I may be able to get a website at a reduced rate. I'd do that if we need.

It looks like the CBS logo at the top of page 10 (on the PDF).

I am a webserver. I'm free of charge :)

Laura Mansfield is a blog too.

I was really referring to organization here.

Dan Rather: "I an exclusive CBS expose', we have found conclusive proof that these documents were produced with an IBM Selectra Proportional Font typewriter, and we know for certain that there were no such typewriters in Iraq at the time."

My guess is that the American public will have a complete paradigm shift before November.

Roger that.

Go see that link. Bloggers just might bring down Hollywood and the elite media. The bone head who wrote it made it sound like we would do it in the name of Marx - Andrew Keen who writes for the Daily/Weekly Standard (confuses me some). Anyway, I showed the CBS version because they reprinted it and I wanted that to be known. Commie Bastard Service. Freedom is why I blog!

And I think Bush and friends should push fact. I hear tell those docs show yellow cake was trying to be purchased in Nigeria by Hussein. If these things are true, Bush and friends should be telling us. Then just before the election, we all should be reminded of the actions of the leaders of the demoratic party.

Hussein had to get low-enriched uranium from somewhere.
