March 17, 2006: Documents confirm Saddam Hussein government knew Zarqawi headed Al Qaeda cell in Iraq in August 2002

Documents released Thursday by the US government show that less than a year after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, Saddam Hussein’s government had identified at least one active Al Qaeda cell in his country.

Among the Iraqi documents collected by U.S. intelligence during the Iraq war amd released Thursday is a document, released only in Arabic, which the US government describes as follows:

2002 Iraqi Intelligence Correspondence concerning the presence of al-Qaida Members in Iraq. Correspondence between IRS members on a suspicion, later confirmed, of the presence of an Al-Qaeda terrorist group. Moreover, it includes photos and names.

A translation of the document shows that the Al Qaeda terrorist that Saddam Hussein’s government had identified was none other than Abu Mus’ab al Zarqawi, who emerged as one of the leading terrorists in post-Saddam Hussein Iraq.

The document, dated August 17, 2002, identifies the Al Qaeda member as Ahmed Fadil Nizal Al Khalaylah, the real name of Zarqawi, and includes a series of photos of Zarqawi. (See link at http://fmso.leavenworth.army.mil/documents-docex/Iraq/ISGZ-2004-019920.pdf)

A memo within the document shows that as early August 8, 2002, Zarqawi was identified as a member of “Tanzeem al Qaeda”, or the “Al Qaeda Organization”.

This document provides startling documentation that at the very least that Saddam Hussein’s government knew that Al Qaeda was active and functioning in Iraq.

Although the document goes on to outline activities of the group, there is no indication that the Iraqi government took any steps to stop Al Qaeda from operating within Iraq, in clear defiance of international law.

but Democrats tell us that Al-Qaida and other terrorsists were everywhere in the world EXCEPT Iraq because Sadaam was a secular ruler. How can this be?

No, they told us that Al Qaeda was against Saddam because he was a secular ruler, therefore Saddam couldn't have been working with Al Qaeda against the US.

Will someone out there tell the Bush administration that as enough of these documents start rolling out that it might be a wise idea to hold a live address and put forward the evidence themselves instead of relying on the media to distort it to the point that Saddam Hussein was taking pictures of Zarqawi to create wanted posters to distribute through tht Arab world?

GWB should get on prime time TV talking about this. I have no doubt clinton would do it if he thought it would help him.

I can just imagine Mr Bush sounding like one of my old Catholic elementary school teachers saying "See? So sister wasn't telling stories!" ;)

I hope he does. I can't help but think his latest tour to talk about the Iraq war again is timed to go along with this.

It is very compelling evidence isn't it.

Clinton's reputation for good PR comes from the fact that the entire NY, DC, Hollywood, and Academia shilled for him.

This President does not have that luxury.

Any of his statements would be disputed, and he would be accused of lying, and the public will buy anything the MSM says.

Ah wait until the "secular" dims start dressing up in their own religious garb. Transformation is in the 'maggot' stage.

Exactly. Clinton had press talking points Faxed out to the MSM by Carville, Begala, etc. to parallel any topic he wanted to address. They ran with stories supporting pretty much any claim he wanted to make orally.
