'Crash' Pulls Off Best-Picture Oscar

The ensemble drama "Crash" pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Academy Awards history, winning best picture Sunday over the cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain," which had been the front-runner.

"Crash," featuring a huge cast in crisscrossing story lines over a chaotic 36-hour period in Los Angeles, rode a late surge of praise that lifted it past "Brokeback Mountain," a film that had won most other key Hollywood honors.

In a year of provocative films at the Oscars, "Crash" was one of the fiercest, a portrait of simmering racial and cultural tension among blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians and Arabs.

The other best-picture nominees emerged either out of Hollywood studios or their art-house affiliates. But "Crash" was a true Oscar rarity, shot outside the system on a tiny $6.5 million budget, then acquired by independent distributor Lionsgate at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival, where the film premiered.

I never heard of Crash

Good, the movie suck. It's your typical Hollywood liberal portrayal of race in America.

"Hollywood" got cold feet. At the end of the day, the liberal Democrat vermin pushed the fudge packers of "Brokeback Mountain" overboard. Jon Stewart was an utterly complete failure as ahost and should be selling bagels in the Bronx, NY. I said the movie "Brokeback Mountain" will cause more damage to gays then it will benefit them. This fact is now coming into focus!!!

Crash wins.
Brokeback does not.

Matt Drudge wails and moans and waits for the next gay movie to be nominated so he can have more stories about it than whetever is the important news of the day.

Yes, the penguins won best documentary.

It would be nice if it comes out in another language so I can buy the DVD, can't stomach Morgan Freeman, leftist.  Otherwise, it was a masterpiece.

My ultra-conservative son said the same thing - - 'Crash' is not an overly judgmental film, nor is it accusatory, overbearing, politically correct, or "in-your-face" in any way. He says it's a flat-out great movie.

I think the Academy got it right.
Let the, "Oh that'th thimply ridiculeth!", wails of the sodomy community begin.

They were sheepherders. :-)

Yeah, but somehow the term "sheepboy love story" just doesn't have the same pazazz.

Check out Amazon Canada. Perhaps they have the French version of it, the original language the movie was made in.

Personally, I felt Kong should have swept the Oscars--all categories, in fact. In fact, it should have been an ALL King Kong Oscar ceremony.

I'm with you there.

Great news. Now hopefully more folks will see CRASH. My favorite film of the year.

My neighbor is a screen write/adapter...he worked on Crash...and gave me a DVD to watch...

I hate pretty much everything that comes out of Hollywood...should I bother watching it?

The 3 facts to pay attention here that make the Academy Awards absolutely pointless:

1. No award has ever been given to Martin Scorsese
2. The Passion of The Christ received no awards and no major nominations.
3. Joaquin Phoenix did not win Best Actor and Walk The Line was not nominated for Best Picture.

Total B.S. on all levels.

Point well taken...I think. Shall we find a "middle of the road," mutually agreeable name for the very-light-in-the-boots sheepherders from Brokebutt Mount?

I thought Stewert was pretty funny. He made a few good cracks about the clueless idealism of Hollywood and the democrats. He also made fun of that atrocious rap performance.

Unfortunately BBM won the best musical score award. Since I did not see the movie, I can't evaluate the musical score. I can definitely say that the score for Pride and Prejudice by Dario Marianelli (it was a nominne in this category) is a wonderful piece of music. I purchased the CD of it shortly after seeing the movie. It is the first time I have ever purchased a CD of a soundtrack for a "non-musical" movie. It is so pretty that it almost makes you think you are listening to new Beethoven or Mozart music. I had to go out to Amazon to find it.
