'Crash' Pulls Off Best-Picture Oscar

The ensemble drama "Crash" pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Academy Awards history, winning best picture Sunday over the cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain," which had been the front-runner.
"Crash," featuring a huge cast in crisscrossing story lines over a chaotic 36-hour period in Los Angeles, rode a late surge of praise that lifted it past "Brokeback Mountain," a film that had won most other key Hollywood honors.
In a year of provocative films at the Oscars, "Crash" was one of the fiercest, a portrait of simmering racial and cultural tension among blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians and Arabs.
The other best-picture nominees emerged either out of Hollywood studios or their art-house affiliates. But "Crash" was a true Oscar rarity, shot outside the system on a tiny $6.5 million budget, then acquired by independent distributor Lionsgate at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival, where the film premiered.

Hustle and Flow should've won best picture. That movie almost made me go out and get a turntable and a microphone and commence rapping (windows breaking in background, alley cats howling) ...which may explain why it lost. (heh, heh)

"Brokeback Mountain," which had been the front-runner.How could it have been the front-runner if the ballots are secret?

So, just the one Oscar for Best Makeup? It was pretty darn good makeup. I was hoping it might win a few others.

Personally, I felt Kong should have swept the Oscars--all categories, in fact. In fact, it should have been an ALL King Kong Oscar ceremony. I loved the film.
The only one in the running for best movie that I saw was Crash. I expected to hate it, but ended up enjoying it. At least Gay Cowboys Eating Pudding didn't win, that would have been insufferable.

No...the best part was the Palestinian movie, PARADISE NOW lost. We wondered how all the Jews in the audience would sit and clap about a movie glorifying suicide bombers. But I'm happily surprised at Hollywood for doing the right thing.

It's supposed to be really good, but that musical number they perfomed was just awful. AWFUL. The song may be good, but the performance tonight was embarisingly bad.

Martin Scorsese didn't want to do Raging Bull because he didn't understand boxing. Still seems he pulled that off pretty well.

There were persistent rumors that many AMPAS voters were a bit nervous voting for Brokeback Mountain because of its subject matter. It appears the rumors are true given the win for Crash.
