'Crash' Pulls Off Best-Picture Oscar

The ensemble drama "Crash" pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Academy Awards history, winning best picture Sunday over the cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain," which had been the front-runner.
"Crash," featuring a huge cast in crisscrossing story lines over a chaotic 36-hour period in Los Angeles, rode a late surge of praise that lifted it past "Brokeback Mountain," a film that had won most other key Hollywood honors.
In a year of provocative films at the Oscars, "Crash" was one of the fiercest, a portrait of simmering racial and cultural tension among blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians and Arabs.
The other best-picture nominees emerged either out of Hollywood studios or their art-house affiliates. But "Crash" was a true Oscar rarity, shot outside the system on a tiny $6.5 million budget, then acquired by independent distributor Lionsgate at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival, where the film premiered.

Hustle and Flow should've won best picture. That movie almost made me go out and get a turntable and a microphone and commence rapping (windows breaking in background, alley cats howling)

Good, I am so glad that Crash won, because it deserved to. I have always enjoyed Matt Dillion. Thank goodness that Broke-back Mountain lost, because wouldn't you know it, it was it was directed by an Asian, since when does someone from China know anything about being a cowboy?

I think best sound, but it lost out to "King Kong."

Nope. They won 3 Oscars. But so did King Kong... LOL!3 Oscars, when the cowgirls were expected to take home 8? I call that a moral victory for those of us who find the whole concept reprehensible...and King Kong is more of a Man than those "cowboys" :)

I never heard of Crash. They told me that that Brokeback Mountain thing was the most significant, most innovative movie of modern times. What happened?

Ang Lee got best director, and they got best screenplay from another source (whatever it is exactly) and best score, I think.
Memoirs of a Geisha got a lot of awards, but amazingly wasn't nominated in the best screenplay from another source (whatever, as I said) catagory. Yet it's source novel was probably the best known of all of them.
