But Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar appears to have acted alone, campus police say
A UNC-Chapel Hill graduate told investigators he intentionally drove into a crowd of students on campus Friday to "avenge the deaths of Muslims around the world," UNC Police Chief Derek Poarch said Saturday.
Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar, 22, told detectives to go to the Carrboro apartment he shared with two other men, saying authorities would find evidence there that would explain his decision to hurt students. Poarch declined to say what, if anything, was found, but emphasized that Taheri-azar appears to have acted alone.
It does not appear that Friday's attack had anything to do with a recent editorial criticizing Arabs and a cartoon depicting the prophet Muhammad in the campus newspaper, both of which angered many Muslim students, Poarch said at a news conference Saturday.
But because Taheri-azar's statements to police suggested a political motive, campus authorities contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation, he said.

The whole damn thing flies in my face.
One is still MIA, is he not?
I read somewhere that he had lived in Indian Trial; isn't that between Charlotte and Monroe, down there on/off Independance?
Thanks for reminding me on those other two warts on society LOL
Yes. My daughter used to live there too. Another daughter lives outside of Monroe.
That's where I sent those champagne glasses we bought!
What other reason for the mess with the FBI live conference yesterday than Erskin Bowles trying to save the UNC system from being a bona fide terrorist hit.
That's the last I heard too. I don't know who they can be saying that "it appears" he acted alone yet. They should be stating only the fact that there is no evidence yet found that anyone else was involved, but the investigation is ongoing.
Very small world! lol Why would they say he'd lived in Charlotte when Indian Trail is in Union county, not Mechlenburg?
"Taheri-azar appears to have acted alone."
In what sense did he act alone? He is a member of that fanatically violent "Religion of Peace" correct?
Don't tell me that Islam had nothing to do with this.
The authorities must have been anticipating a booby trap of some sort.
Excuse me all...I have been listening to the cooking show on my NPR station. I hear Garrison Keillor coming on. Got to jump up and switch it off....BRB

I don't know why they're saying ANYTHING they're saying. This whole thing gives me major creeps. Kids were MOWED DOWN.
* Muslim outrage works too. What's the use of being a Muslim if you can't be outraged?
Muslim terrorists ARE avenging in the name of their so-called "religion".
Good grief!
I wish it were as easy to get rid of them as it is to clean the crap off my shoe.
;)
Just to preserve it, here is the letter the students and faculty recieved from the chancellor:
Chancellor's E-mail To UNC-CH Community
This is the text of an email sent by UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor James Moeser and Peggy Jablonski, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, to the university community on the evening of March 3.
Dear Carolina Community:
We are writing to offer reassurance in the wake of a startling incident today that has so rudely jolted our campus community.
Many of you likely have heard about what happened in the Pit shortly before noon as the traditional lunchtime crowd gathered. Our campus police are now investigating an incident in which a Jeep drove into the Pit, injuring six people - at least five of them students - who were taken to UNC Hospitals. Thankfully, none of those injuries is serious, and hospital officials are reporting late this afternoon that they do not expect anyone to be admitted. Three other people declined any medical treatment on the scene.
Our thoughts and prayers should be with all of those directly affected by this event, as well as their families and friends.
Campus police have arrested a suspect identified as Mohammed Reza Taheriazar, 23, who graduated from the University last December. He will be charged with multiple felony counts. Police ask that anyone with information about today's incident call them at 962-8100.
These are the facts we have to share this afternoon. We are fortunate to have a nationally recognized police department with an excellent track record. We are confident that a thorough investigation will be conducted.
Our student affairs staff and counselors have been providing support to students who watched the scene unfold in the Pit. We encourage any students, faculty or staff who feel they need assistance to seek out counseling from our staff in the University's Counseling and Psychological Services, which can be contacted by calling 966-3658.
All this comes when we are still in the grieving process for our fallen student, Keith Shawn Smith, who died tragically in the residence hall accident last week. Keith was appropriately honored by the beautiful candlelight vigil at Stacy Residence Hall last night. And we must keep in mind Tyler Joseph Ely Downey of Asheville, who remains hospitalized in fair condition this afternoon.
This is a time when it is important for us all to remember the uncommon spirit that ties our campus community together so strongly. We care about one another and it shows. We draw strength from knowing that each day. We hope you do, too.
James Moeser, Chancellor, and Peggy Jablonski, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
The five oldest and most trusted Islamic sources don't portray Muhammad as a great and godly man. They confirm that he was a thief, liar, assassin, mass murderer, terrorist, warmonger, and an unrestrained sexual pervert engaged in pedophilia, incest, and rape. He authorized deception, assassinations, torture, slavery, and genocide. He was a pirate, not a prophet. According to the Hadith and the Qur'an, Muhammad and his henchmen plundered their way to power and prosperity.
Doom on such that kills in the name of religion....
