Since we are at war, traditional, mainstream Republicans WILL vote for someone who is very strong on national defense. In a perfect conservative world, Rudi would be Reagan II on all the social issues. Since thats not the case, we'll have to deal with our personal disappointments of the a man's character. And be glad of his abilities in politics. I saw how Rudi took down the public service unions in N.Y. City, and got them under some semblance of control. His stance on national defense and ability to deal with people who directly affect me and my family is a higher priority than whatever he thinks about Brokeback Mtn., abortion (which he has no control of), or his stance on gun control while being Mayor of New York City. Rudi speech off. (your welcome)
Allen is one of the most personable, genuine, sincere politicians out there.
If it doesn't translate over the tv, his positives will not get him the support he needs. I think someone like Warner or even Bayh might beat George Allen.
Giuliani is liberal on social issues, but he wouldn't have much effect here, except for his Supreme Court picks. It would be interesting to hear what sort of judges he would choose.
I trust Giuliani more than I trust McKean somehow . .

The best way I know how to deal with Rudi's character flaws, is not to vote for him on a national ticket. Btw, please dont try to make Rudi out to be a Reagan-like figure. He is not.
I wouldn't worry about McCain.
The Conservative political junkies are the ones that mainly vote in the primaries. The same happens with the Democratic nomination and primaries.
Otherwise, McCain would have won it in 2000.
Just keep in mind that George Allen's priority this year is getting reelected to the Senate.
He's out there meeting and greeting the faithful. CPAC, the Super Bowl, other events. And that's generating a lot of talk.
If/When it comes to a national campaign, there won't be any reason to worry about personality. I'm confident of that.
Absolutely. And, there is a sure-fire way to tell how detestable he has become: the more you see him on TV and/or hear him on the radio, the worse you know he is.
Ditto that. But, it won't be Allen. More than likely, the major candidates in the end will be Sanford, Owens, Romney. Wildcards are Gingrich and Giuliani. Veep candidates will include Pence, Rice, and any of the closest contenders who don't get the nomination.

This show that you have not met him in person as I have five times when he was my Congressman in the 80s.
To the contrary, I have met few people with the warmth and charisma of George Allen.

Most allen haters when they can't hit him on his record will just accuse him of being an empty suit/gore like. it comes mostly from romney and rudy fans. Rudy's record as a liberal republican becomes plain for all of us to see the less we like him, and romney is alright but he's a gun grabber and a lot of republcians will ask themselves what does a republican have to do to get elected in MA.
If you want rampant allen=doorknob/algore, i suggest you peruse redstate. Funny, consdiering that he tends to win their little straw polls. I guess most allen supporters don't really feel like jumping into it.
Guiliani will win the nomination if he runs. That's my prediction.
Yep, but Allen isn't going anywhere. The right wing of the party, does not have a viable candidate, and the right wing, i.e., the type of folks who won't vote for Rudy or McCain, period, are only about 30% of so of the party.
Lets look at his personal life: Lapsed Catholic, three times divorced, who lived with two gay men after his last divorce. Cheated on all of his spouses. Refused to hire anyone who was not weaker than him, showing his insecurities as a man. Associated with Ray Harding (corrupt political thug) and Bernard Kerik (nuff said).
Rudy Giuliani would combine the worst of the Grant Administration with the worst of NY Rockefeller Republican liberalism.

Southern social (and economic) conservative here, who will gladly vote for Rudy if he wins the primary (and may even vote for him in the primary, if a solid conservative candidate like a Mike Pence isn't in the running.)
Perhaps you are the one who needs to get a clue. Most of us Southern conservatives would view your post as nutty and wildly exaggerated, and completely blow it off. Calling someone a Hitler or Mussalini almost always torpedoes your credibility (and makes us wonder if you need psychiatric help.) Few are going to get all bent out of shape about Rudy dressing up for a costume party, unless they are vehemently against him for other (political) reasons. Here in Texas, I've run into only a small number who have strong feelings against him. Cranks on these threads are in no way representative of the mainstream.
How can *anybody* call themselves a conservative and support McCain for president? < shaking head >
