I just heard from the marvelous Stacie Rumenap (who makes CPAC run) that Sen. George Allen (R.-Va.) won this year’s CPAC straw poll. I don’t have the complete results at this point, but as soon as I get them, I will post. Here are some details:

Nope. McCain as a third-party candidate will guarantee a Dem victory.

>>>>Allen/Rudy. My bet is that that will be the ticket.

Mister Excitement and Mister Liberal?

I sure hope that isn't my choice. George Allen is definitely worth a look. Maybe he'll show us he's got more personality then Gerald Ford or Bob Dole. By now, we should know all about Rudi. Pro-abortion, pro-gun control, pro-gay rights. Liberal Republican. No thanks.

I think Allen has the personality of a tree stump. Freepers who can't see that he has a severe personality deficiency just can't see.

We Virginia FReepers who have known and worked with/for George Allen for decades know that any FReeper who says Allen has no personality is just slingin' a big ol' bucket of Barbra Streisand.

He is one of the most personable, genuine, sincere politicians out there. As one of the original Virginia Allenistas, I happen to know that firsthand.

There was another poll less than two weeks ago. Pew? It had Allen at 2%, among Republicans. Barely on the radar.

I saw him on on of the Sunday shows a year ago. Slightly confused, slightly inarticulate and slightly nervous. An easy steamroll for the MSM and dems. Maybe he got smarter, less nervous and took speech lessons.

It gets the GOP the South, most Conservatives, the Northeast, independents, law and order Democrats, and the post 9/11 anti-terror hardliners. A great ticket.

My goodness. I suppose you think your opinion is the final word on the subject.

..I think that many are looking for the "rock star" charisma of a Bill Clinton.

No one is as ineloquent as the President.
His character is his charisma--not the ability to verbally seduce an audience.

Senator Allen will have plenty of time to prove that he has substance and vision--at least I will allow him to make his case for my support.

I just watched Allen on Fox News Sunday and saw an overly self-conscious, eager to please senator who was just plain boring, and someone who got badly whupped during the national security part of the discussion by a back-bencher like Senator Sneed (Rhode Island).

Read your post after mine. Hmmm, sounds like he didn't get smarter, is still nervous and didn't take speechafyin' lessons. Too bad. But there's still time.:-(

Being "personable, genuine, sincere" are fine qualities, but they dont always translate well once you move up to national politics. Allen hasn't impressed me enough, beyond his sound bite performances. I'll be waiting to see how Allen's campaign handlers repackage him for the national stage. Allen's conservative credentials are gonna have to be clearly laid out for all to see. If conservative folk like what they see in his record and come to like the man, he'll carry the GOP nomination. Winning the general election is a whole different proposition.

Nobody that knows him. The trouble right now is that there are people who have heard of him, but do not know anything about him. The good thing is that once people get to know him they will never vote for him. I just hope people get to know something about him BEFORE the primaries.

I'll tend to agree... but it's early and I try to think positive. ;)

LOL Okay. That's your bet. I won't vote for a liberal Republican at the top of the ticket. Don't think I could bring myself to vote for a liberal Republican in the second slot either. I guess you have no problem with Giuliani. Fine. The bigger question is, will traditional, mainstream conservatives vote for a liberal Republican on a national ticket, for either prez or VP? Right now, I say no.

I agree with you on the personality issue. We may not always line up the same on issues, but George Allen's very personable and knows how to connect with a crowd. One reason he may have polled so well here is because he did address the group.

I think this is the perfect place for him at this point. Governors climbing up from the back of the pack tend to do well. Over the next few years, he should slowly get more face time, but not too quickly. Otherwise, burnout.

As for the slightly confused, articulate, and nervous...I think this should be expected. Too polished looks phony. If you look back over time, all of the presidents were a little amateurish in the beginning.

Hey, when he was running for governor here, he was still chewing Copenhagen. Can't go wrong there.

But apparently not what you want in a door knob?

Look, all I'm sayin' is that I've known and watched him for 20+years. The worries about his personality are unfounded.

Perot gave us 8 years of the Clintons. Had it not been for him; there would not be the Hillary factor today.

Sorry but Perot 'did' nothing of the sort. The reason Perot gained votes is because neither of the parties represented that portion of the population. Basically Bush didn't run the campaign that was required to garner that part of the vote. Shoud the citizens of the respective states be forced to vote for someone even if they don't believe in them simply to prevent the 'other' party from getting into office?

Of course the way it's going if a third party candidate showed up in 2008 with as much as Perot did, the same thing may happen. And it won't be that person's fault but the fault of the existing parties from failing to represent the citizenry
