Portland(OR) officer sues Glock for millions

A Portland Police officer who was injured while firing a handgun has filed a multi-million-dollar lawsuit against the manufacturers of the gun and the ammunition.

Officer Florin B. Pirv was taking a qualification test in March 2004 with a .45 caliber Glock 21 when the “breech/cartridge feed ramp fractured, causing backward propulsion of hot gases, hot air, and shrapnel to be blown into Pirv’s face, body, and hands,” according to the suit.

The lawsuit names Glock and two ammunition-makers, Federal Cartridge Company and Alliant Technosystems, also known as ATK. Glock is based in Georgia. The ammunition-makers are based in Minnesota.

None returned phone calls and emails seeking comment.

Pirv was one of two Portland officers injured while firing .45-caliber Glocks in March 2004, prompting Portland Police Chief Derrick Foxworth to order the recall of the weapons carried by 230 officers.

The bureau replaced them with 9mm Glocks.

Pirv’s suit seeks $50,000 in compensatory damages, $3 million for pain and suffering and $50 million in punitive damages.

Pirv is assigned to a patrol shift, according to a Portland Police spokeswoman.

Good morning
"Can't please everyone"

I can't say that I have ever met a Glock owner who doesn't like it. For me, I don't like the way the gun fits my hand and I find that I don't like the way it points.

Different strokes eh.

"and hammer nails with it."

Above his head or what? Tough on the barrel I presume.

Anything less would be uncivilized!

But there are other solutions equally, and even more, elegant:

It is nice to have such a wide selection of pistols out there. I have an HK USP .40 and a Para Ord. .45 4 inch with the LDA trigger and hard black finish.

The LDA trigger is a little longer and heavier than the Glock. The USP I have is single/double action. Can carry it cocked and locked, DA with hammer down and safety off, DA with safety on. Night sights and a lighter adjustable hammer spring (add-on).

Guns are very interesting. So many kinds and makes and variations. Everybody should be able to find something they are happy with. I'm sure you found a nice one for yourself.

Well, at least it is a legitimate lawsuit. My prediction is that this is settled out of court for a few hundred thousand dollars and Glock admits no fault.

"If you remember this ONE simple rule, you'll never have an ND with a Glock: Like a revolver, a loaded Glock WILL fire when the trigger goes to the rear, regardless of what pushes it."

Another reason for owning a revolver is you don't have to police your brass off the ground. Full Moon Clips and Half Moon Clips can be confusing though.

I disagree. If it's the incident I'm recalling, he blew up his gun by using improper ammo.

Screwing up and blaming someone else is *not* legitimate.

That reminds me of a Glock I once had. It was a 17L and had the long slide with a port in the slide, however the barrel was solid all the way out.

that makes no sense to do at all. The barrel should've been ported too. Possibly an amateur hack job on both the barrel and slide, so the previous owner rebarreled it(or completely misunderstood the reason for porting and just ported the slide). either way it was not a factory option back then and no reputable gun shop would've donr it.

My Glock 34 has a similar hole in the slide and no barrel porting. The hole is designed to lighten the longer slide and has nothing to do with porting of barrels.

For 82 oz's, I would need a hand rest unless I was throwing the gun at the target. Even then I would probably declare a timeout so I could tape it to hand with duct tape and take some pain medication.

Full Moon Clips and Half Moon Clips can be confusing though.

They are only confusing to the poor soul who hasn't had the chance to work with them.

My S&W 625 is probably my favorite revolver, the easiest way I've found to explain moonclips, is to tell the story of how they came to exist during WWI.

If it is pronounced similar to the way Brett Favre of the Green Bay Packers---- "FARVE"

This officers name would be pronounced "PIVER" instead of PERV ????

Never having owned a Webley, I had forgotten about them and last year a friend asked if I knew where he could get some Full Moon Clips. I told him I didn't frequent porno shops.

Good morning.
"Guns are very interesting. So many kinds and makes and variations."

It's a constant battle to counter the efforts of my grandson's school to demonize weapons and their use. I've managed to teach his mother but I've had to teach the kid to stay silent about guns in general and about guns in our home in particular.

Fortunately love of firearms is hardwired into most boys and the hoplophobes have to "educate" it out of them.

My brother-in-law carries a Para Ord and he is happy with it now that I tweaked it a little with a more powerful recoil spring and a polished feed ramp. I've never even handled the HK but I've talked to owners who are happy with it.

My Series 70 Colt was a piece of crap out of the box but I'm not sure much of that wasn't my fault. I've done a little work on it, learned to stop using cheap ammo and I've learned to shoot it correctly. Now it's a tack driver that goes boom every time and that Colt bluing is downright beautiful. Wilson springs and followers in any magazine function flawlessly now.

The .45 and my Makarov are the only pistols I carry regularly but the Mak will be retired soon in favor of a more concealable .45 ACP.

Well, are you going to tell the story of how they came to exist during WWI or make me research it out myself?

Guns are sure a lot of fun for us "backyard gunsmiths" to tinker with.

Keep up the good work with the kids. I do the same. Kids are smart and boys like guns. Keeping them on the right track ain't hard to do. Keeping mouths shut is a different story.

The pain medication is only necessary if you insist on perpetually shooting the largest rounds. Holding 5 1/2 pounds with a nice arm's length isosceles grip requires staying is adequate shape. A nice firm grip is a good idea too, unless you favor a dented forehead.

The Magnum Research BFR 45-70 revolver is a special case. You really want to fire that one with one hand and let it roll upward. A two-handed grip can literally smack you on the forehead with that single action revolver. The barrel on my BFR is 10 inches. The cylinder is 2 inches to accomodate the 500 gr bullets.

To me, that size weapon is a crew served weapon only. My duties of the crew are restricted to observing for safety rule violations. That is not something I would ever tackle on my own!

I love watching guys and gals shoot .50 BMG's. My bonecracker keeps prodding me to try one, the sadistical, money hungry bugger that he is.
