"And the president may not be right when he says that a broad clash of civilisations can be avoided." It is impossible to have a "clash of civilizations" when only one party is civilized.

There are many varieties of cancer, too. Some are quickly lethal and some are slowly debilitating. That doesn't make any of them good.

The contrasts between different varieties of Islam, and Islamism, are not trivialeither in their teachings or the behaviour they inspire. The western world needs to know about them, if only to know which outcomes and shifts of policy are conceivable, and which are not. But woe betide any western strategist who thinks the problems of the Muslim world can be addressed by a policy of divide and rule. The most likely result of that is that western countries will be blamed for divisions that have already existed, in one form or another, since the founding of Islam. Very good article and outstanding conclusion! PING...

"The president has called Islam a peaceful religion, bringing hope and comfort to over a billion people.
To judge by opinion polls, many Muslims around the world are unimpressed."
LOL! They might have added: many Americans are likewise unimpressed.
Too late to read this now, saving it for a daylight read, with coffee!

While the author is concerned with modern times, it is also true that these conflicts of various Islamic groups have been with them since the beginning, because Islam, in all of its forms, is a political system as well as a religious cult. Long before Ferdinand and Isabella drove the last Moors out of Spain, the Muslim colonies there had already been conquered, more than once - each time by more radical Muslims from other parts of the Middle East/North Africa.
However, the point remains: while they hate each other, they all hate us even more.

No, I am not exaggerating. Click the pic, go to "last," and read backwards.
