Green Acres Tidbits

Green Acres was the spin off of the popular rural comedy Petticoat Junction. Both series took place in Hooterville.

In Green Acres, Oliver Wendell Douglas was a successful New York lawyer, who decided to get close to nature and buy a 160-acre run down farm in the Hooterville farming community. Along with him, came his extravagant wife, Lisa, who wanted nothing to do with farm life, she preferred living in New York. However, she slowly grew to love life on the farm yet she still wore fancy outfits that she used to wear in New York. Lisa loved the people of Hootersville, as she called it. But Oliver didn't like the people.

Eb Dawson was the farm handyman and Fred and Doris Ziffel were neighbors. The Ziffels were the proud parents of Arnold Ziffel, a prized pig who appeared frequently and seemed to have an attitude all his own. Frank Cady portrayed Sam Drucker who ran the General Store and appeared on both Green Acres and Petticoat Junction. Pat Buttram portrayed Mr. Haney, the con artist who sold the Douglases their farm.

Passings

Eva Gabor died in 1995, Bea Benaderet died in 1968, Jack “Alvy” Moore died in 1997, Elmer “Hank” Patterson died in 1975, Barbara Pepper (Enfield) died in 1969, and Pat Buttram (?)

Bewitched Theme Song

"Bewitched (Main)" by Howard Greenfield and Jack Keller

Bewitched Tidbits

A delightful if improbable scenario sets the lovely good witch Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) married to a mere mortal, a regular fella who worked for the ad agency McCann and Tate.To maintain domestic tranquility, she agrees to avoid the practice of magic. Easier said than done. That nose was always just a twitch away from trouble.

Perhaps Bewitched is best known for the tale of the two Darrins. Dick York, Darrin Number 1, was replaced by Dick Sargent as Darrin Number 2. Without so much of a word of explanation.

Dick York had been seriously injured while filming "They Came to Cordura" in 1959.The pain persisted into the Bewitched days. In 1969 he was written out of fourteen episodes to accomodate his infirmity. When he tried to return to the show, he suffered a seizure on the set and went off to the hospital. Never to return to the show.

That wasn't the only replacement. To wit:

Successive sets of twins were cast as Tabitha.

Alice Pearce (Gladys Kravitz) died in 1966 and so was replaced by Sandra Gould.

Darrin had two Dad's, Robert Simon and Roy Roberts.

Sam' s Aunt Hagatha was played by both Ysabel MacCloskey and Reta Shaw.

Darrin's secretary was played by four different actresses. A record even for Bewitched.

Ah, and the nearly silent partner in the ad agency, Howard McCann, who only apppeared twice, was played by two different actors - by Leon Ames and Gilbert Roland.

Elizabeth Montgomery was actor Robert Montgomery's daughter; she divorced actor Gig Young in 1963 to marry the show's director William Asher (I Love Lucy, Alice, Dukes of Hazzard), whom she divorced in 1973. In 1995 she married actor Robert Foxworth.

Passings

Sadly, all of the adult major players are dead. Agnes Moorehead died in 1974 of lung cancer, David White in 1990 of a heart attack, Dick York in 1992 of emphysema, Dick Sargent in 1994 of prostate cancer, and Elizabeth Montgomery died in 1995 of colorectal cancer.

That's the end of the ride for today. Please watch your step on exiting the time machine. Now that I've shown you a few, how about you share something from your memory. Or, if one of these were your favorite show then, share a memory of the best episode for you.

We prayed for her again today.

Well, that explains it, then. This one is going much better than her first surgery. She is walking up and down the halls; she is standing up very well on her own, using a walker. Her appetite is much improved, and she is only taking her pain meds (Oxycontin) twice daily.

She had the bandage removed tonight, and it looked very good...no details, too gross, but it looked good. At least, that's what the nurse said!

As soon as the internist is comfortable with the dosage of coumadin she is getting, she will come home. We think that's tomorrow...we'll know first thing in the AM, right after the 4AM draw.

She's itching to come home and lay in her own bed, use her own shower, eat at her own table...but she's stuck with my cooking! Oh well 3 out of 4 isn't all that bad!

In winter, Humpback whales calve here and in Maui. Whale watching is a big tourist attraction but boats have to hold off at certain distances from mothers and calves or be fined. The whales can do as they please.
Sea traffic accidents like the one you described happen....whales usually know everything that's going on around them.
But, hey....when ya gotta breech......

In a pinch, you could always just "cater" her meals. (Go get fast food, restaurant meals to go, or deli food.) ;)

She sounds like one lucky lady to have you there to help!

Prayers continue....
