Green Acres Tidbits

Green Acres was the spin off of the popular rural comedy Petticoat Junction. Both series took place in Hooterville.

In Green Acres, Oliver Wendell Douglas was a successful New York lawyer, who decided to get close to nature and buy a 160-acre run down farm in the Hooterville farming community. Along with him, came his extravagant wife, Lisa, who wanted nothing to do with farm life, she preferred living in New York. However, she slowly grew to love life on the farm yet she still wore fancy outfits that she used to wear in New York. Lisa loved the people of Hootersville, as she called it. But Oliver didn't like the people.

Eb Dawson was the farm handyman and Fred and Doris Ziffel were neighbors. The Ziffels were the proud parents of Arnold Ziffel, a prized pig who appeared frequently and seemed to have an attitude all his own. Frank Cady portrayed Sam Drucker who ran the General Store and appeared on both Green Acres and Petticoat Junction. Pat Buttram portrayed Mr. Haney, the con artist who sold the Douglases their farm.

Bewitched Theme Song

"Bewitched (Main)" by Howard Greenfield and Jack Keller

Bewitched Tidbits

A delightful if improbable scenario sets the lovely good witch Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) married to a mere mortal, a regular fella who worked for the ad agency McCann and Tate.To maintain domestic tranquility, she agrees to avoid the practice of magic. Easier said than done. That nose was always just a twitch away from trouble.

Perhaps Bewitched is best known for the tale of the two Darrins. Dick York, Darrin Number 1, was replaced by Dick Sargent as Darrin Number 2. Without so much of a word of explanation.

Dick York had been seriously injured while filming "They Came to Cordura" in 1959.The pain persisted into the Bewitched days. In 1969 he was written out of fourteen episodes to accomodate his infirmity. When he tried to return to the show, he suffered a seizure on the set and went off to the hospital. Never to return to the show.

That wasn't the only replacement. To wit:

Successive sets of twins were cast as Tabitha.

Alice Pearce (Gladys Kravitz) died in 1966 and so was replaced by Sandra Gould.

Darrin had two Dad's, Robert Simon and Roy Roberts.

Sam' s Aunt Hagatha was played by both Ysabel MacCloskey and Reta Shaw.

Darrin's secretary was played by four different actresses. A record even for Bewitched.

Ah, and the nearly silent partner in the ad agency, Howard McCann, who only apppeared twice, was played by two different actors - by Leon Ames and Gilbert Roland.

Elizabeth Montgomery was actor Robert Montgomery's daughter; she divorced actor Gig Young in 1963 to marry the show's director William Asher (I Love Lucy, Alice, Dukes of Hazzard), whom she divorced in 1973. In 1995 she married actor Robert Foxworth.

Passings

Sadly, all of the adult major players are dead. Agnes Moorehead died in 1974 of lung cancer, David White in 1990 of a heart attack, Dick York in 1992 of emphysema, Dick Sargent in 1994 of prostate cancer, and Elizabeth Montgomery died in 1995 of colorectal cancer.

That's the end of the ride for today. Please watch your step on exiting the time machine. Now that I've shown you a few, how about you share something from your memory. Or, if one of these were your favorite show then, share a memory of the best episode for you.

Elizabeth Montgomery made several TV movies, one of which was "Lizzie Borden" and in another, she played a rape victim. She was a splendid actress.

(((Hugs))) We are here for our hero's our troops and to love and support them. You know that and you know they lurk and we give them a biggest hug.Bet they would have like to interview the girls on Petticoat Junction

USA, CBS (Filmways), Sitcom, 64 x b/w · 148 x colour, 1963
Starring: Bea Benaderet, Edgar Buchanan, Linda Kaye Henning
Petticoat Junction was almost but not quite a spin-off from The Beverly Hillbillies and both were born of the same clever creator, Paul Henning, the doyen of rural comedy. Its main star was Bea Benaderet, who had occasionally featured in The Beverly Hillbillies as Pearl, Jethro's mother. Here she played a similar character, Kate Bradley, the widowed owner of a small hotel, the Shady Rest, in the rural, sleepy town of Hooterville. The series brought deserved top-billing to this actress, who had become familiar to US TV viewers as next-door neighbour Blanche in The Burns And Allen Show and voiced Betty Rubble in The Flintstones (which was an unacknowledged but obvious cartoon version of another great 1950s US sitcom, The Honeymooners). Most of the Petticoat Junction comedy was set in Sam Drucker's general store, the railway station - where the Hooterville Cannonball, a decrepit steam train, was driven by Floyd and Charlie - and around the Shady Rest, where Kate was helped out by her three gorgeous daughters Billie Jo, Bobbie Jo and Betty Jo (the latter was played by Paul Henning's daughter, Linda Kaye Henning) and by Uncle Joe Carson, who pronounced himself the hotel's manager.

Like The Beverly Hillbillies before it and Green Acres after it - the latter was also set in and around Hooterville, and there was much cast-swapping as a result - most of the humour came from the wonderful ensemble playing and the characters' bizarre ways of life. Sadly, the series dropped a notch or two when Benaderet missed many latter episodes through ill-health and then died before the sixth US season (at which point June Lockhart was brought in), but its place as one of the best-loved and most durable of US sitcoms was already assured.

Kids are just very pervasive! They are like little--or big--Houdinis! LOL!

How are you this evening? How is Nana doing? Is she still on track to go home tomorrow? I hope so! She'll get better a lot faster in her home than in the hospital.

I posted this on the last thread but it was just as we switched over. Whale Damages Boat, Injures Man in Calif.
Thursday, February 2, 2006
(02-02) 17:22 PST Santa Barbara, Calif.(AP) --

A whale smashed into a 27-foot boat, destroying the cabin, steering and radar, and injuring one passenger, the boat's owner said.

The Bayliner was cruising off the Santa Barbara coast to catch the sunset Wednesday when the whale came up from below and belly-flopped onto the boat, owner Jerry Gormley said.

The whale emerged again, and its tail toppled the vessel's railings and knocked over a passenger. Bob Thornburgh, 50, was later treated for cracked ribs, his wife said.

The whale was estimated to be about 30 feet long.

Wayne Perryman, a researcher with the National Marine Fisheries Service, said the boaters probably encountered a gray whale, which rarely show aggressive behavior and are common off California this time of year. It could have been a coincidence that the whale surfaced where the boat was, he said.

The whales are also known for approaching boats out of curiosity, he said.

are talking about hospice.

Those are very good people...both for the patient and her family. Hospice helps tremendously afterwards, don't let your manager feel bad about going to them if (when) she has emotional problems later...

With our experience with Nana's Mom and the day-to-day activities where she works, well...we just can't say enough good about the Hospice caregivers.

I think my manager is aware of the good that they do. I think in most cases it is the finality of having to call hospice that is the crux of the matter.

Yeah, that's hard to accept sometimes. It really hit Nana hard to realize that she and her sisters are now the matriarchs of the family...
