OK, so I am getting old, but still remember my favorite time of the week -- Sunday dinner at Grandma's house. In the south we call Sunday lunch, dinner. For an unknown reason, when I awoke this morning, I was thinking about all the happy times as a kid spent at Grandma's house and how much I miss those easy Sundays. On the menu would be:
Pot Roast, Fried Chicken, or Baked Ham.
Fresh veggies from the garden:
Purple hull peas, Butter beans, Sweet potato's, Yellow Squash, Creamed corn, Bread dressing, Cornbread, and Busicuts.
For dessert:
Carrot Cake, German Chocolate cake, Chocolate pie, and Lemon meringue pie.
As kids we would be sent out in the yard to play. Never thought about watching TV, or video games the entire day.
On the way home from Grandma's my Dad would stop by a small country store that had huge Ice Cream cones. I would always have Lime Sherbert.
One of my favorites was elderberry pie and us kids had to pick the elderberries. Chiggers, thorns, critters but it was worth it.
Pour braising liquid into sauce pan and reduce until syrupy use alone or mixed with your favorite BBQ sauce as a baste. Cook in Weber grill over a smoky wood fire until tender. Try it, you'll like it.
Wow, Cookies BBQ. That's made in my home town. I went to school with the owner and the whole story behind Cookies is quite interesting by itself.
I do know that they use only the best ingredients they can buy and quality control is tops.
The owner's nickname 'speed' is also a story that a lot of people would find amazing.
I use the western style for sloppy Joes. In fact it's better than mannwich. But that's just me.
The town which I won't mention was also famous back when col-r-corn was popular. It was made there also. It was the popcorn that was colored in 5 different colors.
A picnic ham swimming in grease, green beans boiled into submission, fried potatoes, salad (iceberg, tomato, carrots) and for dessert a mixture of jello, fruit and marshmallows.
Bless her heart my grandma couldn't cook for beans.
I have some red popcorn my daughter bought me and ran out of white which I prefer. Colored popcorn would be cool. Once it pops, hardly any red shows any more, just the hulls. Tastes the same as white to me.
I have yet to perfect my sloppy joes. I don't like the liquid smoke taste so don't think I will use Cookies western. I like the original.
They just don't make sloppy joes like they used to. I used to get some at the A&W drive in that has gone out of business and also some lady who ran a stand at the ninth hole of the golf course years ago. Both are history.
I just made some the other night using stuff I had on hand. They were edible, but just not quite right.
The best I ever made were when somebody gave me several pounds of the entire cow made into ground beef. I cooked them in the oven slowly because I didn't have a pot big enough. They had onions and tomato soup, can't remember the other ingredients.
For years I've been trying to find a place close to home where I can get midwest ground beef that is from the whole cow even if it costs more. Haven't found any yet. Even tried grinding a sirloin tip roast myself, but that didn't do it and it is hard to grind your own meat unless you have a special grinder. It was a messy business.
Somebody sent a recipe allegedly from the old A&W and it had canned corn beef in it as well as chili powder. I didn't have enough beef in the freezer to mix with corned beef and didn't have any anyway. I'll keep trying. Sometimes I finally break through and sometimes I don't.
I finally got my tuna fish sandwiches just the way I liked them from another tea room that went out of business. They taste just the same.
The original does make good sloppy joes also. I use both and just add some onion.
The col-r-corn was actually white popcorn that was dipped in dye and dried. It popped up white with splashes of color. It was a fad I guess but lasted for some time. The originator of the col-r-corn plant also pioneered flavored noodles(many years ago).
Thanks for not mentioning the town, it is also the birth place of Andy Williams, the singer. His birth house is now a point of interest.
Greasey Grannie's Gopher Gravy sounds good to me.
Your burger recipe sounds great!
Thanks for sharing.
Enjoy! These burgers are truly the best ever. It may take a time or two to adjust the receipe to your grill but it will be worth it.
Please share your tuna fish sandwich recipe.
I get to craving them, so I add an extra small can of tuna usually and adjust the other proportions accordingly.
Before that, we always used Miracle Whip at home, and it makes them too tangy.
Now if you don't like it, you can alter the ingredients to taste. Best served on quality white bread, croissants, white hamburger rolls, etc., with lettuce and sweet-sour pickles on the side. Some people put pickle relish in them, but it's not the way they served them in the tea room, although they could have had something in them I missed. They taste exactly as I remember.
That's it.
IMHO, Hellman's is the very best. It is the only mayo I use.
What is sad is that both my sons like Miracle Whip. Don't know how that happened. I really tried to raise them right.
Bumblebee Tuna, solid pack, white........is the best tuna I have found...........and I have tried them all.
