Officials Fret Over Disappearance Of Explosives 150 Pounds Of Explosives Missing From Sandia-Affiliated Company

POSTED: 2:10 pm MST December 19, 2005 UPDATED: 2:17 pm MST December 19, 2005

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Officials discovered hundreds of pounds of explosives stolen in Albuquerque on Sunday.

One hundred fifty pounds of c4, 250 pound deta sheet, and 2,000 blasting caps were taken from a Sandia Labs employee's company.

Officials are very concerned about these thefts.

The items were stolen from a facility in Southwest Albuquerque.

Burglars apparently cut through steel bars to get at the goods.

C4 is a plastic explosive.

A deta sheet is another explosive that looks like a rubbery sheet of orange or green paper.

What makes deta sheets especially dangerous is that they can be hidden in books or letters. It cannot be spotted by a metal detector but are used by engineers for detonation.

Blasting caps are devices used to set off explosives.

If you know anything about the disappearance, please call police.

I heard it is enough to blow up a building -- hope that doesn't mean a dam or two as well. The area this disappeared from makes me nervous... since I live in the SW.

"I heard it is enough to blow up a building"

That would be classified as an understatement if indeed 100lbs+ is gone

More than 100 lbs. From the ABC News story:

The missing 400 pounds of explosives includes 150 pounds of what is known as C-4 plastic, or "sheet explosive," which can be shaped and molded and is often used by terrorists and military operatives ... Also, 2,500 detonators were missing from a storage explosive container, or magazine, in a bunker owned by Cherry Engineering.

Channel 7 showed a location from the air and on the ground in western Bernalillo County. Trailers and shipping containers (like you see carried on trains) in an enclosure with a fence around it. No security cameras, no guards, an unlocked fence. It indeed seems it is on the West Mesa. That this material was stored in this manner does seem negligent, no matter how distinguished Cherry is.

Explosives are fairly common for construction and other industrial applications so it's not surprising that they are stored-in such a manner. The thing that bothers me about this is that given the items taken (so far nothing else was reported missing) that this was definitely an inside job or even more troubling it was a very well planned snatch. 5-6 years ago the inside job would be more along the lines of "hey hold my beer and watch this" but now nobody is going to take the legal risks just to make something go boom for fun. If it was an outside job than a individual (unlikely just one) has at least decent planning skills and has something in mind for their new found cargo

PS Squantos, I think I may have typoed you a new nickname Mt :)

Oh, he made an appearance on the local news shows saying how important it was to find the explosives. Doubt if it was much more than a blip considering his busy schedule traveling.

Not me, I wouldn't want to store the stuff until the 4th of July anyway.

Plus I'm smart enough to know that in attempting the jump from fuses to timers I'd probably end up Tijeras Stumpy.

Bad news though, considering the types and quantities.
